The error may say, “The program can’t start because htmlayout.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “htmlayout.dll was not found,” “Error loading htmlayout.dll,” or “HTMLayout.dll cannot be loaded to properly start GUI.”

htmlayout.dll is an application DLL from HTMLayout, an embeddable HTML and CSS rendering component developed by Terra Informatica Software. It is not a Windows system file, Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, .NET runtime file, or device driver.

The correct fix is normally to identify the application that requested the file and repair or reinstall that application from its own publisher. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy one into System32.

  • The error names an application: repair or reinstall that application.
  • The error appears while installing or updating Avast or AVG: remove the incomplete installation with the publisher’s official removal procedure, then install the current version again.
  • The message appeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security protection history before restoring anything.
  • The message appears at every startup but names no program: identify the old executable in Startup apps or Task Scheduler.
  • The DLL exists but Windows says it cannot load it: the file may be the wrong build, damaged, or missing a dependency. Repair the owning application rather than registering the DLL.
  • The problem started immediately after a recent system change: System Restore may help if a suitable restore point exists.
  • Several Windows programs are also failing: run DISM and SFC after checking the application-specific causes.

What htmlayout.dll belongs to

HTMLayout was a native Windows component that applications could embed to display HTML-based interfaces. Different applications could ship their own private copy of htmlayout.dll, usually beside the application executable.

That means the filename alone cannot identify the program that owns it. Older Avast and AVG software is associated with historical installation and update reports involving this DLL, but the file does not automatically belong to every Avast, AVG, or security installation.

Terra Informatica now describes HTMLayout as historical software and identifies Sciter as its successor. Sciter is not automatically a drop-in replacement for an old program. Only the application’s developer can update that application to use a newer component.

Historical file catalogs list 32-bit builds including:

Architecture Version Approximate size
32-bit 3.3.3.9 0.9 MB
32-bit 3.3.2.170 3.02 MB
32-bit 3.3.2.5 3.02 MB

These listings are not safe installation sources. Different applications may require different builds, and a file with the right name can still be incompatible.

Fix 1: Identify and repair the application

A missing DLL message usually means an application installation is incomplete, damaged, or missing a file after an update or uninstall.

If the error identifies the program

  1. Write down the application name shown in the dialog.
  2. Close the error message.
  3. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Find the application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If the program opens normally, Windows has found the application’s private DLL or restored its installation files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some traditional desktop programs use a different repair path:

  1. Press Windows key and type Control Panel.
  2. Open Programs > Programs and Features.
  3. Select the affected program.
  4. Choose Repair or Change.
  5. Follow the installer’s prompts.
  6. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  7. Test the application again.

If there is no Repair option, download the installer from the application’s official publisher and run it. Choose Repair, Modify, or Install over the existing copy when offered. If that is not available, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and install it again using the official installer.

If the application was recently removed

A startup entry or scheduled task may still be trying to launch an executable whose program has been partially uninstalled.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for the application named in the error.
  3. If it is still listed, uninstall it normally.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. If the error remains, open Settings > Apps > Startup.
  6. Turn off an entry that clearly belongs to the removed application.
  7. Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu.
  8. Review Task Scheduler Library for a task belonging to the obsolete program.
  9. Disable or remove that task only when you can identify its owner.

Do not delete htmlayout.dll to hide a startup message. Remove or repair the application that is calling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 2: Reinstall Avast or AVG using the publisher’s procedure

Older Avast and AVG installations are a known context for HTMLayout loading errors. If the message appears during antivirus installation, update, or startup, a normal Windows DLL repair is unlikely to solve it.

Use the current removal utility supplied by the antivirus publisher:

  1. Download the official Avast or AVG removal utility from its support site using a working browser.
  2. Save the utility locally.
  3. Close open programs.
  4. Run the utility as administrator.
  5. Allow it to restart Windows into Safe Mode if requested.
  6. Select the installed Avast or AVG product.
  7. Complete the removal.
  8. Restart Windows normally.
  9. Download the current installer from the publisher.
  10. Install the product again.
  11. Restart Windows and test the antivirus interface.

Use the current publisher installer rather than trying to recover a historical HTMLayout build. If removal fails, record the complete error text and inspect the utility’s log or contact the antivirus publisher.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a file that an application expects. A file named htmlayout.dll is not automatically safe simply because the application requested it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Expand a detection related to the affected application.
  6. Check the original file path, detection name, and action taken.

Restore or allow the file only if all of the following are true:

  • It came from the legitimate application installation.
  • The parent application was installed from its official publisher.
  • The path is consistent with that application.
  • The publisher and digital signature are valid where available.
  • A current security scan does not identify the file as malicious.

If the file was quarantined, the safer long-term action is usually to repair or reinstall the application after resolving the detection. That gives the publisher’s installer an opportunity to place the correct build back in the application directory.

Do not disable antivirus protection or add a broad exclusion merely to make the error disappear. If the file is suspicious, run a full Windows Security scan and investigate the application that created it.

Fix 4: Check the application’s architecture and dependencies

Windows 11 and Windows 10 can run both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The application’s architecture determines which DLL build it needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 32-bit program normally loads its 32-bit private DLL from the application directory, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a 64-bit copy cannot substitute for that file. Conversely, placing a random 32-bit file beside a 64-bit program can create a different loading error.

To identify the executable:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the path in Target.
  5. Open that folder and identify the main .exe file.
  6. In Task Manager, open Details while the program is running.
  7. Right-click the column headings and enable Architecture, where available.

Do not treat third-party catalog versions as interchangeable. A wrong version may produce errors such as:

  • “The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located.”
  • “htmlayout.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

“Specified module could not be found” can also mean that htmlayout.dll exists but one of its dependent files is missing or incompatible. Repairing the application is the correct first response because its installer knows which private files belong together.

Fix 5: Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET just for this DLL

htmlayout.dll is not supplied by Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or the .NET runtime. Installing those packages specifically to obtain this filename is not a supported repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install a runtime only when the affected application’s publisher explicitly requires it or the application displays a separate runtime error. Adding unrelated runtime packages will not replace an application-owned HTMLayout file.

Windows Features are also not a normal source for this DLL. Enabling legacy components will not install the correct private copy for the application.

Fix 6: Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64

Do not copy htmlayout.dll into either of these folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those directories are not general-purpose DLL storage. Copying a file there can:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Leave the application’s own installation damaged.
  • Create conflicts between programs requiring different builds.
  • Put an unverified file in a trusted Windows location.
  • Cause a new version or architecture error.
  • Make later troubleshooting more difficult.

The correct location is normally the application’s own installation directory, and the correct way to restore it is the application’s official installer.

Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this error

Do not run this as a general repair:

regsvr32 htmlayout.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download a missing file, repair an application installation, resolve dependencies, or select the correct architecture.

There is no verified reason to register the HTMLayout runtime DLL with regsvr32. If you already tried it and received another error, undoing that command is not necessary; simply return to the application repair or reinstall procedure.

Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

DISM and SFC are useful when Windows system files are corrupted. They are not a normal way to reinstall an application-owned HTMLayout DLL, so use them after repairing the affected program or when other Windows components are also malfunctioning.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files against that store. Neither command guarantees recovery of a third-party application DLL.

Repeating these commands without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it found, while repair actions require the full version. For this file, repairing or reinstalling the application that owns htmlayout.dll remains the definitive fix.

Fix 9: Update the application, not the DLL

Check the affected program’s Help > Check for updates option, if present. You can also download the current installer from the application’s official publisher and install it over the existing version.

If the application depends on an old HTMLayout build, only its developer can provide a compatible update. Replacing the file independently can make the program fail with an entry-point error or crash during startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A driver update is rarely relevant to a missing application DLL. Do not use Device Manager to install htmlayout.dll. If the same incident also includes graphics, storage, or device failures:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Open Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Choose Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows cannot find a suitable one. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Updating a driver will not replace an application-owned htmlayout.dll.

Fix 10: Use System Restore only after a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver, update, installer, or system configuration change and Windows has a suitable restore point.

  1. Press Windows key and type Create a restore point.
  2. Open the result.
  3. Select System Restore.
  4. Choose Next.
  5. Select a restore point dated before the error began.
  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
  8. Select Next > Finish.
  9. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally affects system settings, drivers, and installed programs rather than personal documents. It does not replace the need to reinstall an application if that application’s files are missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A generic DLL download is a poor fix for htmlayout.dll. The downloaded file may:

  • Contain malware.
  • Be modified or unsigned.
  • Be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Be a different build than the application requires.
  • Have incompatible dependencies.
  • Leave the original installation problem unresolved.

There is no verified current official standalone HTMLayout redistributable package to use as a universal replacement. The safe sources are the affected application’s official installer and, when relevant, the official antivirus publisher’s removal and reinstall procedure.

If the repair still fails

Collect this information before contacting the application publisher:

  • The complete error text.
  • The application name.
  • The executable name shown in the error or shortcut.
  • The full installation path.
  • Your Windows version.
  • Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
  • Whether the application itself is 32-bit or 64-bit, if known.
  • When the error began.
  • Whether the program was updated, uninstalled, or restored recently.
  • Antivirus detection and quarantine history.
  • Whether repair, reinstall, DISM, and SFC changed the result.

Also check installer logs, available disk space, file permissions, Controlled folder access, and compatibility with the current Windows version. If the DLL exists, provide its exact path and the full wording of any “specified module,” entry-point, or “not designed to run” error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FAQ

Is htmlayout.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a third-party application component from HTMLayout, developed by Terra Informatica Software.

Which program uses htmlayout.dll?

The filename alone does not identify the owner. Several applications could have shipped private copies. Older Avast and AVG products are associated with historical reports, but you must identify the executable named in your own error.

Should I download htmlayout.dll?

No. Use the application’s official repair or reinstall process. Random DLL sites can provide malware, an incompatible build, or the wrong architecture.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not specifically for htmlayout.dll. This file is not a Visual C++ Redistributable component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I register it with regsvr32?

Normally no. regsvr32 does not restore missing files or repair dependencies, and there is no verified requirement to register HTMLayout’s runtime DLL.

Can I copy it into System32?

No. Copy it beside an application from an unverified source can create conflicts and does not repair the owning program.

What if the file is present but still will not load?

Repair the application first. The file may be damaged, the wrong build, or dependent on another missing or incompatible module.

Can Sciter replace HTMLayout?

Sciter is identified as HTMLayout’s successor, but it is not an automatic replacement for an existing application. The application developer must update the program.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I run SFC and DISM?

Run them when Windows system corruption is also plausible or other Windows components are failing. They are secondary measures for this application-owned DLL problem.
