Script Hook V lets compatible custom ASI plugins use Grand Theft Auto V’s native script functions. To install it, download the version that supports your GTA V patch, then place ScriptHookV.dll beside GTA5.exe. ASI plugins also need an ASI loader; the official distribution includes dinput8.dll. Script Hook V does not work in GTA Online and closes GTA V when a player enters multiplayer.
What Script Hook V does
Script Hook V is Alexander Blade’s library for custom ASI plugins that call GTA V native script functions. It is not a mod menu or a complete mod by itself. A plugin that depends on the hook needs the matching ScriptHookV.dll installed in the game folder.

The hook and its optional sample trainer are software files; they are not separate physical products. GTA V for PC is a prerequisite. The official developer page is the place to check the current supported game patches and download the files: Script Hook V by Alexander Blade.
Install Script Hook V
- Check your GTA V patch. Compare the installed game version with the supported patch listed on the developer’s Script Hook V page. The page reported v3889.0 / 1158.13, supporting game patches 1.0.3889.0 / 1.0.1158.13, in a release dated July 15, 2026. These are version-specific details, not a guarantee that the same build remains current after a game update.
- Download the compatible archive from the developer’s page and extract its contents.
- Open the GTA V main folder. This is the folder containing
GTA5.exe, not the folder for an individual mod. - Copy
ScriptHookV.dllinto that folder. The hook’s official installation instructions specify this location. - Install an ASI loader if you want to run ASI plugins. The distribution includes
dinput8.dll; copy it to the same game folder. If an olderdsound.dllASI loader is already there, the developer page advises deleting it. - Choose whether to install the sample trainer. Copy
NativeTrainer.asito the game folder only if you want that optional example plugin.
Check compatibility after GTA V updates
Script Hook V compatibility depends on the installed GTA V patch. If the game updates and the hook’s listed support does not match, plugins that rely on ScriptHookV.dll may stop working until the developer releases a compatible update. Check the developer page again after a game update rather than assuming an older hook will continue to work.

Script Hook V and Script Hook V .NET are different
Script Hook V .NET (SHVDN) is a separate ASI plugin built on Script Hook V. It allows scripts written in .NET languages to run in GTA V; it is not required for every ASI plugin. Use it when the mod specifically calls for SHVDN or a .NET script runtime.

For SHVDN, use the ASI and API DLL files from the same-version archive rather than mixing files from different releases. Its requirements and installation details are in the Script Hook V .NET project documentation.
Choose the right SHVDN build for your game version
SHVDN’s README says that GTA V game version v1.0.3258.0 or later requires v3.6.0-nightly.89 or later, or a return to game version v1.0.3179.0 or earlier. It identifies stable SHVDN v3.6.0 and v3.5.1 as incompatible with game version v1.0.3258.0 and later. Because these build notes can change, read the current SHVDN README before choosing a release.

Nightly builds may address newer game versions, but the project warns that they can introduce script incompatibilities and API changes. If an existing script stops working on a nightly build, the script may need an update; verify the project’s current notes before changing versions.

No. Alexander Blade’s page states: “Note that it doesn’t work in GTA Online, script hook closes GTA V when player goes in multiplayer, see details in the readme.” Script Hook V is for single-player use, and the documented behavior is that it closes the game when the player enters multiplayer. This describes the hook’s behavior; it is not a statement about every mod or a guarantee concerning account enforcement.

Troubleshoot common installation problems
- The game closes or a plugin does not load: Confirm that
ScriptHookV.dllis in the same folder asGTA5.exe, and that the installed hook supports the game’s current patch. - ASI plugins do not load: Confirm that an ASI loader is present in the game folder. The official distribution includes
dinput8.dll; remove an olderdsound.dllASI loader if applicable, as advised by the developer. - A .NET script fails: Check that the mod actually requires SHVDN, that its prerequisites are installed, and that its SHVDN version matches the game-version guidance. Avoid combining API and ASI files from different SHVDN archives.
- The issue began after a game update: Recheck the supported patch on the Script Hook V page and, for .NET scripts, the current SHVDN README. A prior version may no longer match the updated game.
