sddflowid.dll is a legacy Mentor Graphics component used by PADS and related SDD schematic software, not a Windows system file. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact PADS release that produced the error, then start PADS from its installed shortcut instead of copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.
What this file actually does
sddflowid.dll belongs to the Mentor Graphics SDD runtime used by older PADS workflows, especially PADS Logic and PowerLogic. PADS is now a Siemens product, but older installations may still use the original Mentor Graphics directory structure and launch configuration.

The exact folder depends on the installed release. Public file records identify the DLL as SDDBuildVersion and document a 32-bit build with SDD flow and version-related exports. Those records are useful for identification, but they do not prove which version belongs to every PADS installation.

This distinction matters:
sddflowid.dllis not supplied by Windows.- It should not normally be placed in
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - A 32-bit PADS executable needs a compatible 32-bit DLL.
- A copy from a different PADS release can create new version or configuration errors.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the DLL exists but one of its dependencies is missing.
Diagnose the error by its symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| PADS will not start from its shortcut | Damaged or incomplete PADS installation | Repair the same PADS release |
PADS starts normally, but .sch files fail when double-clicked |
Incorrect file association or working directory | Associate .sch with the correct powerlogic.exe |
The DLL exists under SDD_HOME, but Windows still reports it missing |
Wrong launch path, missing environment setting, or dependency failure | Start PADS from its shortcut and repair its environment |
The message also names MSVCR120.dll or MSVCP120.dll |
Missing Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x86 runtime | Repair or install the x86 redistributable |
| The file disappeared after a security scan | Antivirus quarantine | Check Protection history and verify the original installation |
| Only a recently moved or network-mounted copy fails | Broken shortcut, path, or environment configuration | Restore the original installation path or repair PADS |
Fix 1: Repair the original PADS installation
This is the most reliable solution because it restores the matching DLL, companion runtime files, shortcuts, and configuration together.
Identify the affected release
- Press
Windowsand search for PADS. - Right-click the PADS shortcut and select Open file location.
- Right-click the shortcut again and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Record the PADS version and installation directory.
If the shortcut points to a versioned folder, use that release’s installer. Do not repair a different PADS release simply because it is the first one you find.
Run repair
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, select Apps and Apps & features.
- Locate the matching Mentor Graphics or PADS entry.
- Select the three-dot menu, if present, and choose Modify, Change, or Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Start PADS from its Start-menu shortcut.
Some legacy installers do not expose a Repair button in Windows Settings. In that case, run the original setup program and choose Repair. If repair is unavailable, back up projects, libraries, licenses, and custom settings before uninstalling and reinstalling the same release.

Confirm the result
After repair, check the matching SDD_HOME tree for sddflowid.dll. Then open PADS from its installed shortcut. If PADS starts but a schematic still fails by double-click, continue to the file-association fix below.
If the file is still absent after repair, the installer may be incomplete, the installation media may not match the installed release, or antivirus software may be removing it. Do not fill the gap with a download from a DLL catalogue.
Fix 2: Correct the .sch file association
A particularly important pattern is that PADS opens normally, while double-clicking a schematic produces the sddflowid.dll error. In that situation, Windows may be launching the wrong powerlogic.exe, using an old release, or starting the executable without the environment configured by the PADS shortcut.
Set the correct application on Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Default apps.
- In Set a default for a file type or link type, search for
.sch. - Select the current application.
- Choose More apps, then Look for another app on this PC.
- Browse to the
powerlogic.exebelonging to the same PADS release as your projects. - Select it and click Open.
Set it through Open with
- Right-click a
.schfile. - Select Open with, then Choose another app.
- Select Choose an app on your PC or More apps, depending on Windows version.
- Browse to the correct versioned
powerlogic.exe. - Enable Always use this app to open .sch files.
- Select OK.
Test both methods: start PADS from its shortcut and open the schematic inside the program, then double-click the same file in File Explorer. If the first method works and the second does not, the association or launch environment is still wrong.

Multiple PADS installations can coexist, so selecting an executable by name alone is not enough.
Fix 3: Restore the PADS environment
Legacy PADS installations may depend on environment variables and runtime paths created by their supplied SDD Configurator. Windows does not automatically search every folder below C:MentorGraphics.
Do not permanently add random PADS directories to the global PATH. That can make one release load files belonging to another.
Instead:
- Open the PADS installation folder identified from the shortcut.
- Look for the release’s SDD configuration or environment utility.
- Run the supplied configurator using the same account that normally launches PADS.
- Apply the configuration for that release.
- Close all PADS processes.
- Start PADS from its original shortcut.
If the installation was renamed, moved, or launched from a network location, restore the original path where possible. A shortcut may still point to an old directory even though the program files were moved.

Fix 4: Install the Visual C++ dependency only when named
Public metadata lists MSVCP120.dll and MSVCR120.dll as dependencies associated with documented 32-bit copies of this file. If Windows names either dependency in the error, install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x86 Redistributable from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ downloads page.
The x86 package matters because the documented PADS dependency is 32-bit. Installing only the x64 package does not supply the 32-bit runtime required by a 32-bit application.
After installing it:
- Restart Windows.
- Start PADS from its normal shortcut.
- Reopen the schematic or application that failed.
Installing Visual C++ does not recreate sddflowid.dll. If the error names only sddflowid.dll, repair the PADS installation first. If both the PADS DLL and a Visual C++ DLL are named, repair the application and install the matching runtime.

Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine an old application DLL, particularly after a scan or an update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the detection involving the PADS installation.
- Do not restore it automatically. First verify that its original path is inside the legitimate PADS directory.
- Scan the installer and the surrounding PADS folder with current security software.
- If the file is confirmed legitimate, use your organization’s security process to restore or allow it.
- Repair the PADS installation if restoration is unavailable.
A quarantined file should not be replaced with a similarly named download. If the detection cannot be cleared by your security team or PADS vendor, treat the installation as untrusted and reinstall it from legitimate installation media.
Fix 6: Check Windows components only after application repair
System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They normally do not restore a third-party PADS DLL, so they are lower-priority steps for this error.
Rank #3
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test PADS again. If Windows reports repaired components but sddflowid.dll remains missing, return to the PADS installer. These commands did not replace the application file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRepeating SFC and DISM without checking the PADS path usually adds no value. Outbyte PC Repair can show what Windows repair areas need attention before you repeat these commands; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the correct PADS release remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Do not update unrelated drivers
Device Manager is not normally relevant to sddflowid.dll. This is an application runtime file, not a display, storage, chipset, or printer driver. Do not uninstall hardware drivers merely because the DLL error appeared after a Windows update.
Use Device Manager only if the error occurs alongside a clear hardware failure:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
Do not expect this to restore a PADS DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking many hardware drivers and its free scan identifies outdated entries; the full version installs updates, but driver maintenance is separate from repairing PADS.
What not to do
Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application files. A 32-bit DLL copied into a system directory may still be invisible to the correct PADS process, may conflict with another application, and can create DLL search-order or preloading risks.
Do not use random DLL download sites
A downloaded replacement can contain malware, match the wrong historical build, use the wrong architecture, or lack companion files. It often hides the real cause, such as a broken PADS shortcut or missing Visual C++ dependency.
Use the original PADS installer, a repair package from the licensed installation, or a verified copy from the same known-good PADS deployment.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
There is no established evidence that this application DLL provides a DllRegisterServer entry point. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM and ActiveX libraries, not ordinary runtime DLLs loaded by an application. Running it against sddflowid.dll is unlikely to fix the launch error.
Do not use Windows Features, DirectX, or .NET as guesses
Enabling random Windows Features, reinstalling DirectX, or reinstalling .NET does not normally restore this Mentor Graphics runtime. Follow the error’s named dependency and the PADS installation path instead.
If nothing fixes it
Collect these details before contacting the PADS administrator or vendor:
- The exact PADS release shown by the shortcut or installer
- The complete error text
- The full path to
powerlogic.exe - Whether PADS starts from its shortcut
- Whether the error occurs only with
.schdouble-clicking - Whether
sddflowid.dllexists under that release’sSDD_HOME - Any additional missing DLL named by Windows
- Whether antivirus quarantined or removed the file
- Whether the installation was moved, renamed, or mounted from a network location
If the failure began immediately after a known system change and no installer is available, System Restore may be reasonable. It is not a substitute for repairing a damaged PADS installation.
FAQ
Is sddflowid.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the legacy Mentor Graphics SDD and PADS environment. It should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which applications use it?
The strongest known connection is to PADS Logic, PowerLogic, and related Mentor Graphics schematic workflows. The filename alone cannot identify the exact PADS release.
Why does Windows say it is missing when I can see it?
The executable may be starting from the wrong folder, the .sch association may point to another PADS release, the SDD environment may be missing, or a dependency such as MSVCR120.dll may be absent.
Will Visual C++ fix it?
Only if the error also identifies a missing Visual C++ dependency. The x86 Visual C++ 2013 runtime can address MSVCR120.dll or MSVCP120.dll; it does not recreate sddflowid.dll.
Can I download the file and copy it into Windows?
No. Use the original PADS installer or a verified copy from the same licensed installation, then repair the shortcut and environment.

Usually no. This is an application runtime DLL, not a documented self-registering COM component.
Why does opening PADS first work?
Starting PADS from its installed shortcut may set the correct working directory and SDD environment. A broken file association can launch powerlogic.exe without those settings. Repair the association rather than relying on the workaround.
