The exact message may say “windows.devices.pointofservice.dll is missing,” “was not found,” or “could not be loaded.” windows.devices.pointofservice.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows Runtime component used by applications that communicate with point-of-sale hardware.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. The correct repair depends on whether Windows is damaged, one POS application is broken, antivirus has quarantined the file, or the application is actually failing because of a device or driver problem.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest safe path:
- Several Windows features or applications are failing: install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- Only one retail, scanner, printer, or POS application fails: repair or reinstall that application.
- The error began after an update: retry Windows Update or use Windows 11’s recovery reinstall option.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- The file exists but the application reports a bad image: check the file’s architecture and digital signature, then repair Windows and the affected application.
- The application reports that a scanner, printer, or cash drawer is unavailable: troubleshoot the device and its driver separately.
- DISM and SFC repeatedly fail: use System Restore, an in-place Windows repair, or Windows recovery.
The DLL name alone cannot identify the application that triggered the message.

Microsoft describes the Windows.Devices.PointOfService namespace as a vendor-neutral Windows Runtime interface for point-of-sale peripherals. Applications can use it to work with barcode scanners, cash drawers, magnetic-stripe readers, line displays, and POS printers.

Microsoft’s Point of Service examples use the Windows.Devices.PointOfService namespace and classes such as BarcodeScanner and PosPrinter. See Microsoft’s PointOfService namespace documentation and Point of Service getting-started guide.
This is a Windows Runtime implementation DLL. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or ordinary hardware driver. There is also no separate “Windows.Devices.PointOfService Redistributable” that you should install.
The application that displays the error may be a retail system, inventory program, kiosk application, scanner utility, or another POS-enabled Windows application. No particular game or consumer program can be identified from this filename alone.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its system files
This is the primary fix when the file is absent from Windows, multiple applications have started failing, or the problem followed a crash, interrupted update, disk issue, or cleanup operation.
Install pending updates
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try opening the affected application again.
If the error remains, repair the Windows component store and protected system files.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Microsoft documents this order because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC may need when replacing protected files. Its System File Checker instructions cover the process, while Microsoft’s DISM repair documentation explains image repair.
Success means SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, or the application starts normally after the restart. If SFC says it found no integrity violations but the application still fails, the problem may be inside the application rather than Windows.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhen manually comparing DISM and SFC results, it is easy to repeat commands without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the correct first repair for this system component.
If SFC could not repair everything
An SFC message saying that some files could not be repaired does not mean you should copy a DLL into System32.
Restart the computer and run DISM again, followed by SFC. If the same files remain damaged:
- Note the exact SFC result.
- Open Event Viewer from Start.
- Go to Windows Logs > System and look for storage or disk errors around the same time.
- Check available disk space.
- Run the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility for the system drive if storage failure is suspected.
- Use System Restore or Windows recovery if the corruption continues.
Microsoft’s recovery options explain how System Restore, reset options, and other recovery methods differ.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If every other application works and only one POS program fails, repair that program after completing the Windows repair steps.
Repair a Store-style application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset, if available. Reset can remove the application’s local data, so use it only after checking the program’s own backup or sign-in requirements.
Repair a traditional desktop program
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the POS application.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer’s instructions.
- Restart the computer and test again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or your organization’s approved software source. This is the definitive fix when the application’s own files, configuration, or dependencies are damaged.

For an application managed by a launcher, use its built-in Repair, Verify files, or equivalent command if available. These features can restore private application files, but they cannot repair a damaged Windows copy of windows.devices.pointofservice.dll.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after a detection or false positive.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the entry associated with the DLL.
- Check the reported path and detection details.
- Run a full scan before restoring anything.
Restore the file only when the path is a normal Windows system location and the file’s Microsoft signature can be confirmed. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can reintroduce a threat. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.
If the file was quarantined from an application folder rather than a Windows system directory, do not assume it is the legitimate system component. Remove the affected application and reinstall it from its official source after the system scan completes.
Fix 4: Confirm the correct architecture
On 64-bit Windows, Microsoft separates native 64-bit system files from 32-bit files used by 32-bit applications:
%windir%System32contains native 64-bit system files.%windir%SysWOW64contains 32-bit system files.
A 32-bit application normally needs the 32-bit copy, while a 64-bit application needs the native copy. This naming can be confusing, but it is part of Windows’ WOW64 file-system redirection. Microsoft documents the behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not copy a file between these folders. A wrong architecture can cause “bad image,” entry-point, or “not designed to run on Windows” errors.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
The safest way to restore either architecture is DISM and SFC, not manual replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 5: Verify the file’s Microsoft signature
If the file is present but you suspect tampering:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to
%windir%System32or%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click
Windows.Devices.PointOfService.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A valid signature does not prove that every related application is healthy, but an invalid signature or a copy in an unexpected download or temporary folder is a reason not to use that file. Run a full security scan and repair Windows through servicing.
Fix 6: Troubleshoot the POS device or driver
A missing DLL error and a missing hardware device are different problems. If the application starts but cannot see a scanner, printer, cash drawer, or magnetic-stripe reader, investigate the device instead.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the device, such as Imaging devices, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Other devices.
- Look for a warning icon or an unrecognized device.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- If the device remains broken, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Test the POS application again.
Do not install a device driver merely because a DLL page recommends it. Reinstall a driver when Device Manager or the POS application reports a hardware or driver fault.
Driver versions are difficult to match manually across scanners, printers, USB controllers, and chipset components. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer’s official driver remains the preferred source.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run this command as a generic DLL fix:
regsvr32 Windows.Devices.PointOfService.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the conventional self-registration entry point. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference, but windows.devices.pointofservice.dll is a Windows Runtime component, not a normal self-registering application DLL.

Registering it will not restore a missing Windows component and may produce an error about a missing entry point. Use DISM and SFC instead.
If the error started after Windows Update
On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows can reinstall the current version while preserving applications, files, and settings:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
If that option is unavailable, retry Windows Update and use DISM and SFC. Microsoft describes this recovery option in its Windows Update reinstall instructions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Last-resort recovery
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent installation, update, or configuration change and a restore point exists. It normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal documents.
If recovery still fails, perform an in-place repair installation using official Windows installation media. Back up important files first. A clean installation should be reserved for a seriously damaged or compromised system and requires a complete backup and application reinstall. Microsoft’s installation-media recovery guide explains the process.
FAQ
Is this a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is part of Windows’ Point of Service Windows Runtime support, although the error is usually displayed by the application that attempted to use it.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this DLL alone. Those runtimes are not established fixes for a missing Windows Runtime Point of Service component. Install them only if the error separately names a missing dependency that requires one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I download the DLL manually?
No. Random DLL download pages can provide the wrong build, architecture, language, or a modified file, and copying it may hide the underlying Windows or application problem. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the application’s official installer, or the hardware manufacturer’s official driver.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, an invalid file, or a damaged dependency. Check the signature, repair Windows, and repair the affected application rather than replacing the file manually.
Why does the application still fail after SFC repairs Windows?
The application itself may be damaged, missing its pointOfService capability, or unable to communicate with a device driver. Repair or reinstall the application, then inspect Device Manager and the application’s own logs.
Where should the 32-bit copy go?
Windows manages the architecture-specific copies. On 64-bit Windows, native files are normally under %windir%System32 and 32-bit files under %windir%SysWOW64. Do not move or download either copy manually.

What should I do if the problem returns?
Check Windows Update history, Protection History, disk health, and the application’s update status. Repeated corruption after DISM and SFC is a reason to investigate storage or Windows recovery rather than repeatedly copying DLL files.
