“ The program can’t start because sdiagschd.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “The code execution cannot proceed because sdiagschd.dll was not found,” “Error loading sdiagschd.dll,” or “The specified module could not be found.”
sdiagschd.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named Scripted Diagnostics Scheduled Task. It belongs to Windows’ scripted-diagnostics infrastructure, not to a game, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or a normal third-party application.

Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right path:
- The error appears at startup or across unrelated programs: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- The problem began immediately after an update: restart, check Windows Update again, then use Windows 11’s repair-reinstall option if available.
- Windows Security shows the file in quarantine: verify its path and signature before restoring it.
- The file exists outside the Windows directory: treat it as suspicious until its publisher and origin are verified.
- Only one old application reports the error: repair or reinstall that application, but do not assume it owns this Windows DLL.
- SFC cannot repair the file or other Windows components are damaged: use System Restore, a Windows repair reinstall, Reset this PC, or installation media.
- The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows: suspect corruption, an incompatible replacement, or the wrong architecture rather than a missing runtime package.
What sdiagschd.dll is and where it belongs
The normal path is:
%SystemRoot%System32sdiagschd.dll
On a typical 64-bit installation, System32 contains 64-bit Windows system files. Windows uses %SystemRoot%SysWOW64 for many 32-bit system files through its file-system redirection system. The names are unintuitive, so do not copy a DLL between these folders based only on its filename.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the best starting point when the error appears during startup, Windows diagnostics, or more than one unrelated application.
Install pending updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, choose Windows Update. In Windows 10, choose Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check whether the error returns.
If the problem began after an interrupted update, completing the update cycle may restore the component. If it does not, continue with DISM and SFC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRun DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Restart if DISM requests it.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. It normally obtains repair files through Windows Update.
Run SFC
After DISM finishes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and repeat the action that produced the error.
Success usually appears as a message stating that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the error remains, continue below rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
When you are repeatedly hunting through repair commands and cannot tell which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problem; its free scan shows what it found, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the primary fix for this Microsoft component.
Fix 2: Repair Windows when DISM or SFC fails
The result from SFC determines the next step.
If SFC found corruption but could not repair everything
Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC a second time. If the same files remain unrepaired, the Windows component store or the underlying storage may be damaged.
Check the complete SFC result in the CBS log only if you need deeper diagnosis. More useful information to collect first includes:
- Your Windows edition and build
- The complete error text
- The path shown in the error
- The exact DISM result
- The exact SFC result
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only with one application
- Windows Security protection history
- Recent update, cleanup, restore, or repair activity
Use Windows 11 repair reinstall
Windows 11 may offer a less destructive repair option:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and leave the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, personal files, and settings where the feature is available.
Use System Restore
Use System Restore if the problem began after a driver, update, cleanup utility, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without normally removing personal files. It does not help if restore points are unavailable or disabled.
If Windows will not start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged file, a falsely identified file, or a malicious replacement.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security in Windows 11, or Update & Security in Windows 10.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
sdiagschd.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect the original path and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of the following make sense:
- The original path is the Windows system directory.
- The file is identified as a Microsoft Windows component.
- The file’s digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- A full Defender scan does not find broader malware.
Do not restore a copy from a game directory, temporary folder, download archive, or unknown application folder merely because its filename matches.
After handling quarantine, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If malware is suspected or the system behaves strangely, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area.
Fix 4: Verify the path and signature
A file named sdiagschd.dll outside %SystemRoot%System32 is not automatically malicious, but it needs verification.
To inspect the location:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Press Enter.
- Search for
sdiagschd.dll. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Open the signature details and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
Also check the Details tab for the description, which should identify the scripted diagnostics scheduled-task component. A missing signature, an invalid signature, an unexpected publisher, or a location inside an application directory requires caution.

Do not rely on filename, icon, file size, or a claimed “latest version.” Those details vary by Windows build and can be copied by malware.
Do not download the DLL separately
Do not obtain sdiagschd.dll from a random DLL download page and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong Windows build, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual component-store problem unresolved.

The safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- A matching Windows installation or repair source

- Official Windows installation media
Manual replacement is appropriate only as part of controlled Windows servicing with a matching, trusted source. For most users, DISM and SFC are safer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for replacing or repairing every missing DLL.
Do not run:
regsvr32 sdiagschd.dll
as a routine solution. Public inspection identifies COM-related exports but does not establish that this file provides the registration entry point required by regsvr32. A “Cannot register sdiagschd.dll” message does not prove that registration was needed.
Fix 5: Repair the application only when one program is affected
If Windows starts normally and only one old application reports sdiagschd.dll, first check the full error path and the application’s installation history.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only after checking that the application’s data is backed up.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
A normal application should not need to ship its own copy of this Windows system component. If the application is incorrectly requesting it, an application update or reinstall may correct the request. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the application executable.
Windows Features and Device Manager are not appropriate generic fixes for this file. Enable a Windows feature only when a specific Windows component requires it. Use Device Manager only when your investigation also identifies a separate driver problem.
Fix 6: Update drivers only for a broader driver problem
A driver update is relevant if the DLL error began with device failures, repeated crashes, display problems, storage errors, or a recent hardware change. It is not the normal repair for an isolated missing sdiagschd.dll message.
To check drivers manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the symptom.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Note the provider and date.
- Use Update driver, or download the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
If you are hunting through many device categories and cannot identify which driver is stale, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver versions; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Use it only as an optional aid, and do not treat a driver update as a substitute for repairing Windows.
What to do when recovery still fails
Back up personal files before using more destructive recovery options.
Use Reset this PC when Windows remains unstable and System Restore or repair reinstall is unavailable:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery in Windows 11, or Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10.
- Select Reset this PC.
- Choose whether to keep personal files.
- Follow the prompts and reinstall applications afterward.
Use matching Windows installation media when DISM cannot obtain repair files, the component store is unrecoverable, or malware has compromised the installation. Choose a repair or in-place installation path when available. A clean installation should be the last resort after backup, because it removes applications and may remove personal data depending on the option selected.
If SFC repeatedly reports damage, DISM reports an unrecoverable image, or other files are failing, also check the health of the system drive and back up immediately. A damaged drive can repeatedly corrupt repaired files.

Is sdiagschd.dll malware?
No, the Windows component itself is legitimate. A copy with an unexpected path, invalid Microsoft signature, or suspicious provenance may be a replacement or an unrelated file using the same name.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No verified evidence links sdiagschd.dll to those runtimes. Repairing Visual C++ is appropriate only when the error names files such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll.
Which Windows versions contain it?
Versions of the component have existed across Windows 7, Windows 8.x, Windows 10, Windows Server releases, and at least some Windows 11 releases. The correct file varies by build.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?
That depends on the Windows installation and the specific component copy. On 64-bit Windows, do not assume that a file belongs in System32 or SysWOW64 based only on its name.
What does “module could not be found” mean?
It can mean the named file is missing, but it can also indicate a missing dependency or a damaged loading path. Start with Windows servicing rather than copying dependencies into an application folder.
What information should I collect before asking for help?
Record the Windows edition and build, complete error text, path shown in the dialog, event log entry if present, antivirus history, DISM and SFC results, and whether the error occurs at startup or only when launching one application.
