When did Sea of Thieves add crouching?
Crouching arrived with Season 14 on October 17, 2024. Rare’s update announcement said the season was free for all players. The “six years, six months and 27 days” figure came from Rare’s celebratory social post, reproduced in GameSpot’s October 18, 2024 report; it is Rare’s stated wait, not an independently audited interval.

Season 14, titled “Making Mischief,” introduced a broader set of stealth-oriented mechanics. Rare’s launch announcement described crouching as a way to move more quietly, alongside chest and barrel disguises. The season’s feature page also covered traps, ledge-hanging, a grapple gun and Merfruit.
What does crouching do?
Rare describes crouching as slower movement that lets a pirate move silently and hide from enemies when they are out of those enemies’ line of sight. Its October 31, 2024 Hotfix 3.2.0.1 notes add practical effects: crouching can conceal a player’s name, hide them from some nearby enemy threats, make them harder to hit and brace them against knockback.

It is a trade-off, not a faster way to cross the map: moving slowly and quietly can help when approaching a crew or avoiding notice, while the slower pace can be a disadvantage if you need to escape quickly. Crouching is one stealth option among several, rather than a substitute for the season’s other mechanics.
Was crouching available continuously after launch?
No. Rare temporarily disabled some new stealth features after launch because of high-impact issues. The October 31 Hotfix 3.2.0.1 notes said players could “once again” switch from standing to a low crouch, marking its return after that interruption. Later Season 14 notes also discussed disguises and ledge-hanging, so the season’s announced mechanics should not be read as having all remained available without interruption from day one. Rare’s later Season 14 notes document those subsequent updates.
