Sea of Thieves launched on Battle.net on May 22, 2025, alongside Season 16. The release gave PC players another storefront and launcher option, with cross-play so Battle.net crews could sail with players on other platforms. Eligible players who already own the game digitally on Xbox or Microsoft Store, or have Game Pass access, can install the Battle.net Standard Edition without buying it again by linking the Microsoft account that holds the license or subscription.
When did Sea of Thieves come to Battle.net?
Rare announced the Battle.net release on April 14, 2025. The game became available on the launcher on May 22, 2025, at the same time as Season 16. The date in the original announcement headline referred to that 2025 launch, not an upcoming release.

Rare described Battle.net as a new way to access its shared-world pirate adventure and said the launch would bring cross-play to a new audience. Its announcement put the point plainly: “Your favourite pirate sandbox will be opening up to Battle.net alongside the launch of Season 16 on May 22nd, bringing cross-play to a new audience and deepening the pool of potential players on the seas, all ready for you to battle or befriend (or both, in either order) according to your preference.”
Can Battle.net players sail with friends on other platforms?
Yes. Rare and Blizzard described the Battle.net release as supporting cross-play with players on other platforms. Battle.net players are not limited to crews made up only of other Battle.net users.

Can you install the Battle.net version if you already own Sea of Thieves?
According to the Sea of Thieves Support article, last updated May 22, 2025, eligible players can install the Battle.net Standard Edition at no extra cost if they own the game digitally through Xbox or Microsoft Store, or have access through Game Pass. You need to link the Microsoft account that holds the game license or Game Pass subscription to your Battle.net account.
Check which Microsoft account has the qualifying license or subscription before linking. The support article states that changing Xbox Network links through Battle.net has a 90-day cooldown. Because account-linking policies can change, confirm the current support guidance before unlinking an account or trying to switch to another one.

What were the Battle.net editions and launch offers?
The launch announcement described three digital editions with different cosmetics and timed benefits. These details describe the 2025 launch offer, not a current buying guide: availability and prices may have changed. Blizzard listed the Deluxe Edition at USD $49.99 and the Premium Edition at USD $59.99 when it covered the launch.

The edition names, bonuses, and prices above reflect the historical launch materials from Blizzard and Rare. Both the beta and early-access windows have ended. Rare also said players logging in during Season 16 would receive Sails of Bonded Brawlers; its launch coverage does not establish whether that reward can still be claimed.

What the Battle.net release changed for PC players
The release expanded where players could access Sea of Thieves on PC and offered a way to join friends who use Blizzard’s launcher. It did not create a separate Battle.net-only version of the shared seas: the launch materials specifically highlighted cross-play. For existing digital Xbox or Microsoft Store owners and Game Pass users, the support page’s account-link route may also avoid purchasing the Standard Edition a second time.
