Sea of Thieves Season 17 began on 14 August 2025, introducing the Smugglers’ League as its headline faction. Its core loop was to find unusual cargo, carry it between hideouts or other destinations, and earn seasonal progress through voyages, deliveries and related activities. This is a guide to the season as announced at launch; it does not confirm that its limited-time offers or rewards remain available.
What was the Smugglers’ League?
Rare’s Season 17 launch announcement presented the League as a new faction built around moving illicit and fragile goods across the Sea of Thieves. Rather than relying on one mandatory voyage, crews could take on deliveries, find cargo through world events and salvage, or pursue emergent opportunities.

The League’s cargo included Fine Art, valuable rum and Black Powder Barrels. Each made a delivery run risky in a different way: Rare warned that rum bottles could shatter if damaged, while Black Powder Barrels were described as especially powerful explosives. Fragile cargo called for careful handling; explosive cargo made the route itself a potential hazard.
How did the two kinds of Smugglers’ Runs differ?
Season 17 offered a planned delivery route and a more emergent bottle-led voyage. The key difference was how crews discovered the run and how much route information they could expect.

| Voyage type | How to start | Route information | Cargo focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smugglers’ Route Run | Attempt it from the Quest Table in High Seas. | A golden route changed each Season and appeared on other ships’ Map Tables, making the run visible to potential rivals. | League cargo delivery. |
| Smugglers’ Run from a bottle | Find a Smuggler-branded Message in a Bottle. | Emergent voyages could follow a variety of routes between hideouts. | Fragile exotic goods carried between hideouts. |
These distinctions come from Rare’s Season 17 overview. A Route Run gave crews a marked path, but the marker also made their activity legible to other crews. A bottle-led run was discovered out in the world and could send a crew along a different route, with fragile cargo central to the voyage.
Where else could crews find League cargo?
A direct delivery voyage was not the only way to take part. Rare also described several world activities that could put cargo in a crew’s hands:

- Smugglers’ Shipwrecks: wreck sites offered cargo to salvage.
- Roving Skeleton Ships: some carried League cargo that crews could recover.
- Washed-up goods: items on shore provided another chance to find cargo.
These alternatives made the League’s smuggling theme part of exploration and encounters as well as formal voyages; the launch material does not establish that any one activity was required to progress.
How did Season 17 progression and rewards work?
Rare announced 100 Renown levels for Season 17. Completing Smugglers’ voyages and handing in cargo contributed to Commendations and cosmetic rewards, alongside the season’s broader progression. Rare’s 3.5.0 release notes and Smugglers’ League guide provide additional context on the season’s commendations and reward theme.

The optional Season 17 Plunder Pass was announced with Rare Regalia ship and pirate cosmetics and 750 Ancient Coins. That figure and the pass contents describe the launch-era offer, not a guarantee that it can still be purchased or claimed.
What else arrived with Season 17?
Fortresses under pressure
Rare’s launch announcement said Flameheart’s forces were using the League’s arrival as a distraction to strengthen Skeleton Forts. In Act 3, newly fortified Reaper Fortresses were described as coming under siege from a Phantom fleet, with traps adding danger to the fights. These were seasonal feature details in the 14 August 2025 announcement.
Pirate Profiles
Season 17 also introduced Pirate Profiles, a way to keep an additional pirate persona without overwriting an existing one. The launch article said a Pirate Deed could be purchased through the Pirate Emporium; it does not establish whether that purchase remains available.

The launch coverage establishes what Rare announced on 14 August 2025—including its progression, Plunder Pass contents and Pirate Deed option—but does not verify present availability of those offers.
