For most buyers, the Base Edition is all you need: Deluxe and Premium primarily add cosmetics, in-game currency, and digital bonuses.
You will need a Microsoft account even if you buy the Steam version. The game is always online, supports cross-play and account-based cross-progression across supported PC and Xbox versions, and now includes both lower-conflict Safer Seas and Season 20’s private-session customization system, Custom Seas.

Where to download Sea of Thieves on Windows PC
Choose the storefront that matches how you already play. The underlying game is not a separate Steam-only or Microsoft-only community: official materials describe cross-play between PC and Xbox players, with pirate progress connected through the relevant Microsoft account.
| Route | Best for | Ownership model | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Players who keep their library on Steam | Standalone purchase | Requires Steam plus Microsoft-account sign-in |
| Microsoft Store/Xbox | Xbox ecosystem users | Standalone purchase or subscription | Uses Microsoft Store and Xbox services |
| PC Game Pass | People testing the game or playing several subscription titles | Subscription access | Access ends if the qualifying subscription ends |
| Xbox Game Pass Ultimate | Existing Ultimate subscribers | Subscription access | Usually unnecessary if you want only this PC game |
| Battle.net | Players who prefer that launcher | Standalone purchase | The official buy page lists it, but the detailed installation guide covers Microsoft Store and Steam |

#1 Best Overall
Is Sea of Thieves free on PC?
No. It is not a permanently free-to-play standalone game. You can access it through a qualifying PC Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, or buy it outright. Downloading the client is not the same as owning the game.
As US price signals checked for this guide, PC Game Pass was listed at $13.99 per month and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at $22.99 per month. Prices vary by country, tax, promotion, and billing terms; check the PC Game Pass page and Ultimate page before subscribing.
Which edition should you buy?
Buy the Base Edition unless you specifically want the higher editions’ extras. The 2026 Edition naming refers to the current listing of the live-service game, not a new sequel or a separate campaign.
| Edition | What it includes | Who should buy it? |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Full game, 2026 soundtrack, Athena’s Fortune audiobook, and The Rough Guide to Sea of Thieves eBook | Almost everyone buying outright |
| Deluxe | Base content, Sovereign clothing, Cardinal Lodestar weapon cosmetics, and 10,000 gold | Players who want those specific cosmetics |
| Premium | Deluxe content, Cardinal Lodestar cat and costume, Cardinal Lodestar ship cosmetics, Collector’s ship cosmetics, and 1,000 Ancient Coins | Cosmetic collectors who value the listed items and Pirate Emporium currency |
The higher editions do not present a separate gameplay campaign, stronger equipment, or an exclusive core mode. The digital soundtrack, audiobook, and eBook require a Sea of Thieves website login. Details are listed on the official edition page.

The current Steam listing for Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition specifies the following requirements:

These are the store’s published requirements, not a guaranteed frame-rate target. Resolution, graphics settings, drivers, background applications, and storage speed all affect performance. Treat 100 GB as the stated minimum and keep additional free space available for updates and temporary installation files. Check the current Steam system-requirements listing before installing.

Steam installation
- Buy or redeem the game through Steam.
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Choose Sea of Thieves.
- Click Install.
- Choose the destination drive and start the download.
- Launch the game and complete the Microsoft-account sign-in or linking process when requested.
To activate a Steam code, use Add a Game followed by Activate a Product on Steam. The same official support guide documents the process.
After the first launch
Keep three accounts and entitlements distinct:
- Microsoft account: your online identity and the account associated with pirate progress and cross-platform services.
- Steam account: your Steam purchase and launcher identity.
- Game Pass subscription: required only when you use the subscription route.
Steam players still need Microsoft-account authentication; an Xbox console online subscription is not the same requirement as playing on Windows PC. If you previously played on Xbox or through the Microsoft Store, sign in with the Microsoft account containing your existing pirate profile. Do not create or link a new profile casually if your progress appears missing.
What does Sea of Thieves include?
A shared-world pirate adventure
You sail between islands, caves, outposts, seaposts, and shipwrecks while searching for treasure, completing voyages, fighting enemies, and encountering other crews. Another ship can be a potential ally, a rival, or an immediate danger.
Rank #3
- Fish Collecting: You are a marine researcher seeking to find and observe an array of aquatic life in the colorful Sunlight Zone, ghostly Twilight Zone, and pitch-black Midnight Zone of the world's seas and oceans.
- Plays in 4 Rounds: Dive into the watery depths to find and observe a vast array of aquatic life over a 4 week (round) period. Each round plays quickly, and the whole game takes around an hour, depending on familiarity with the game and number of players.
- Build Your Engine: Grow your collection of fish, discover freshly laid eggs, hatch eggs into young, and consolidate young to form schools. Earn points, play new fish, help others, and many other abilities! The winner is the player with the most points gained from fish, eggs, young, schools, and achievements.
- Inspired by Wingspan: While some of the gameplay may feel familiar from Wingspan, there are many new elements that make Finspan a fun, new experience! Finspan is a part of the World of Wingspan, along with Wyrmspan, and explores aquatic life with lighter, more entry-level gameplay mechanisms.
- High Replayability: Finspan includes 135 unique fish cards and 9 different achievement tiles, which means that this game provides endless opportunities for fish combinations and discovery.
Cooperative crews
Crewmates operate the ship together: steering, raising and lowering sails, navigating, repairing damage, managing supplies, fighting, and selling loot. Communication matters more than traditional character levels. The main rewards are reputation, titles, gold, commendations, cosmetics, and new experiences—not permanent statistical power that makes veteran pirates inherently stronger.
PvE, PvP, voyages, and Tall Tales
Activities include treasure hunting, voyages, skeleton and creature encounters, world events, ship-to-ship combat, emergent encounters, and challenge-oriented activities. Tall Tales provide more structured, narrative-focused adventures and are a good fit for new players, solo players, or anyone who wants story content.
The official Steam page contains older promotional references to Arena. Current 2026 coverage emphasizes Adventure, Safer Seas, seasonal content, and Custom Seas, so do not treat that legacy page copy as confirmation that Arena is a current standard mode.
Cosmetic progression and seasons
Pirates can customize outfits, weapons, ships, ship liveries, pets, and other appearance items. The progression model is therefore closer to earning reputation, currency, commendations, and cosmetics than building a conventional gear score.
Season 20, launched on June 18, 2026, uses a 50-level Season Pass with a free track and optional Premium Tier. Players earn Renown, choose among cosmetic rewards, and can reach a Star Prize at the end of the track. The release notes specify that players may purchase up to 10 levels using Ancient Coins at 150 Ancient Coins per level. See the Season Pass documentation and release notes for current details.
Rank #4
Safer Seas versus the standard shared world
| Feature | Standard shared seas | Safer Seas |
|---|---|---|
| Other crews | Present | Protected from disruption by rival crews |
| PvP risk | Player encounters and ship combat are possible | Reduced or absent from other crews |
| Progression | Full standard progression route | Limited to balance the reduced risk |
| Best use | The complete open-ended game loop | Learning, Tall Tales, private-group play, and exploration |
Safer Seas is useful for learning ship controls, practising sailing, completing Tall Tales, and exploring with friends. It is not offline mode: Sea of Thieves remains an online service, and Safer Seas has feature and progression restrictions. See Rare’s Safer Seas overview.
What is Custom Seas in Season 20?
Custom Seas is the major current feature for players who want controlled private sessions. It is a free in-game rules and session customization toolkit—not necessarily a dedicated-server rental, unrestricted level editor, or full modding system.
Custom Seas supports private-session lobbies, invitations and join codes, saved presets, and custom ship and crew configurations. Rare’s documentation describes switches and commands that can alter player, ship, enemy, creature, world-event, and treasure behavior. Hosts can use tools such as fast travel, treasure and wildlife spawning, and free-camera functions to create challenges, experiments, events, and competitive formats.
A Custom Seas lobby can support up to 24 players across six crews, according to the Season 20 release notes. This makes it more flexible than simply playing alone, while still keeping the session under the host’s chosen rules.
Which PC route is best?
Choose Steam if you:
- Prefer Steam’s library, downloads, overlays, achievements, and refund workflow.
- Want the game alongside your existing Steam collection and friends list.
Choose Microsoft Store/Xbox if you:
- Already use PC Game Pass or Xbox services.
- Have Xbox-linked pirate progress or an eligible Play Anywhere purchase.
- Prefer Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem and account integration.
Choose PC Game Pass if you:
- Want to test the game before buying.
- Already subscribe or play multiple games in the catalogue.
- Do not need access after cancelling the subscription.
Choose Game Pass Ultimate if you:
- Already maintain Ultimate for its broader Xbox, PC, and cloud catalogue.
If this is the only game you intend to play, compare the subscription cost with the current standalone price. Buy outright if you expect to play for many months or years and want access without recurring payments.

Common download and account problems
The game does not appear in the Microsoft Store library
- Check that the intended Microsoft account is signed in.
- Confirm that the code or purchase was successfully redeemed.
- Verify that the purchase is for the Windows PC-compatible edition.
- Update the Microsoft Store.
- Check the Store’s Library, not only search results.
- Confirm that Windows and Microsoft Gaming Services are working correctly.
Steam launches but your progress is missing
First check whether you signed in with a different Microsoft account from the one used on Xbox or Microsoft Store. Stop before creating a new pirate profile or unlinking accounts. Account-linking changes can create support complications.
There is not enough storage
The published requirement is 100 GB available. Free additional space for patches, updates, and temporary installation files rather than treating 100 GB as a comfortable permanent reserve.
Your Windows version is unsupported
The current Steam listing requires 64-bit Windows 10 build 18362.0 or newer. Update Windows before diagnosing the game itself.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYour PC is below the minimum specification
Do not assume that older support material about scalable performance guarantees a good experience on an under-spec machine. Use the current store minimum as the buying baseline, then account for resolution, drivers, graphics settings, and background software.
You expected offline play or stronger paid equipment
Neither assumption matches the current product description. Safer Seas is still online and has restrictions. The reviewed editions and progression systems focus on cosmetics, gold, Ancient Coins, and seasonal rewards rather than paid weapons or permanent combat statistics.
Final recommendation
For most Windows PC players, buy the Base Edition on the storefront you already use. Choose PC Game Pass when you want the lowest-commitment way to test the game, and choose Game Pass Ultimate mainly if you already subscribe for its wider benefits. Treat Deluxe and Premium as optional cosmetic bundles, not gameplay upgrades. Once installed, use Safer Seas to learn the basics and Custom Seas to experiment privately with friends.
