Its shared-world encounters are part of the premise, not an optional story mode; players who want a predictable, purely solo experience may find that uncertainty frustrating.
What kind of game is Sea of Thieves?
Sea of Thieves is a pirate adventure centered on sailing, exploration, fighting, and looting. You can set out alone or with a crew, but your ship shares an online world with other players. The official Steam listing describes treasure voyages, building reputation with Trading Companies, fighting creatures, fishing, and making treasure maps among the activities available.

That variety gives players room to choose their own objectives rather than follow one fixed sequence. A voyage can be about finding loot, making progress with a Trading Company, or simply seeing what turns up at sea. The trade-off is that other crews can become part of the session: they may be a threat, an unexpected encounter, or a reason to change plans.
Is Sea of Thieves worth playing?
It is a strong fit for players who enjoy the journey as much as a checklist of missions. Sailing and exploration are central attractions, and the changing possibility of meeting other crews gives familiar activities an unpredictable edge. Playing with friends is an especially natural fit for the cooperative side of the game, though the official Steam feature labels also include online PvP.

It is less suited to someone who wants every session to be calm, private, or tightly scripted. Solo play is possible, but it does not remove the shared-world premise. If online uncertainty is a deal-breaker, consider that before buying.
What do the ratings and reviews say?
Steam’s surfaced page snapshot, accessed October 8, 2026, showed 89% positive from 294,513 purchased reviews overall, and 83% positive from 2,046 reviews in the last 30 days. These are Steam user-review figures at that snapshot, not critic scores, a review of every platform, or a permanent rating; the counts and percentages can change.

GamesRadar highlighted its ocean world, playing with friends, continued updates, and Xbox Series X performance; TechRadar emphasized co-op exploration, ongoing content, and reported 4K/60fps performance on Series X. These are individual publications’ editorial assessments, not a representative cross-platform critic-score aggregate. In a GamesRadar review passage, Sam Loveridge praised the ocean environment and its potential for storytelling; that is one reviewer’s assessment, not a measured performance result.
