Battlefield 6 requires Secure Boot on PC. Before changing anything in your BIOS or UEFI firmware, check four things: Windows must be running in UEFI mode, Secure Boot must be enabled, TPM 2.0 must be ready, and the Windows system disk should use GPT partitioning. EA supports the game on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11, but older hardware or legacy installations may need configuration changes first.

What Secure Boot does

Secure Boot is a UEFI firmware security feature that runs before Windows. It checks whether trusted, digitally signed boot components are allowed to start, helping prevent boot-level malware such as rootkits from loading before the operating system.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

It is not a Windows switch, antivirus product, Windows Defender feature, or EA Javelin Anti-Cheat setting. The control normally appears in your motherboard or PC firmware under names such as Secure Boot, Windows UEFI Mode, OS Type, or Authentication. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Microsoft explains the security model in its Secure Boot documentation.

Why Battlefield 6 requires it

EA says Secure Boot is required to play Battlefield 6 on PC because Javelin Anti-Cheat uses the system’s trusted boot state as part of its security model. EA specifically discusses threats including kernel-level cheats, rootkits, memory manipulation, hardware-ID spoofing, virtual machines or emulation, and tampering with anti-cheat software.

Secure Boot is one layer of that system, not a guarantee that every cheat will be prevented or that every anti-cheat error will disappear. Other games and publishers set their own requirements; Battlefield 6’s policy should not be generalized to all PC games.

See EA’s Secure Boot announcement and setup guide for the current requirement.

Does Battlefield 6 support Windows 10?

EA’s official PC FAQ lists 64-bit Windows 10 as the minimum operating system and 64-bit Windows 11 as the recommended operating system. Windows 10 compatibility does not mean every Windows 10 PC qualifies: the machine still needs supported hardware and the required UEFI, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, and GPT configuration.

Check your PC before entering firmware

Start with Windows diagnostics. This avoids blindly changing a setting that may be unavailable, unnecessary, or incompatible with your current boot configuration.

1. Check UEFI and Secure Boot

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
  3. In System Summary, find BIOS Mode and Secure Boot State.
Result Meaning
BIOS Mode: UEFI and Secure Boot State: On The basic Secure Boot requirement is already satisfied.
UEFI and Secure Boot State: Off Your system likely supports Secure Boot; enable it in firmware after checking TPM and disk layout.
BIOS Mode: Legacy Windows is booting through an older compatibility mode. Check whether the system disk is MBR before changing firmware settings.
Secure Boot: Unsupported Check the PC or motherboard specifications, firmware version, and manufacturer support documentation.

2. Check TPM 2.0

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type tpm.msc and press Enter.
  3. Confirm that the TPM is ready for use and that the specification version is 2.0, where shown.

TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are related but different. Secure Boot validates the boot chain; a TPM is a hardware or firmware security processor. EA’s Battlefield 6 setup guide lists TPM 2.0 as an additional prerequisite for the game’s anti-cheat environment.

If TPM is absent or not ready, do not immediately buy a TPM module. Firmware implementations may be labelled Intel PTT, AMD fTPM, Security Device Support, Trusted Computing, or TPM Device. Check the exact model documentation first.

3. Check whether the Windows disk is GPT

  1. Press Windows+X and open Disk Management.
  2. Find the disk containing the Windows installation, usually the disk containing OSDisk (C:).
  3. Right-click the disk’s left-hand label, such as Disk 0, not the C: partition itself.
  4. Select Properties, open Volumes, and read Partition style.

GUID Partition Table (GPT) is the expected format for a UEFI/Secure Boot installation. Master Boot Record (MBR) may require conversion before you switch from Legacy or CSM to UEFI.

How to enable TPM 2.0

TPM settings are in UEFI firmware, but there is no universal menu path. Depending on the manufacturer and processor, look under Security, Advanced, Trusted Computing, or a similar section for Intel PTT, AMD fTPM, or a security-device option.

Use the support page for your exact PC or motherboard model. EA’s guide provides manufacturer support links, including ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Gigabyte, Acer, and ASRock.

If the disk is MBR: convert only after validation

Do not switch a Legacy/CSM installation to UEFI first if Windows is still installed on an MBR disk. That combination can leave Windows unable to boot.

Before partition changes, back up important files and make sure you can access your Windows recovery information. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, locate the recovery key first; changes to firmware, TPM, or boot configuration can trigger a recovery prompt.

Open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window and identify the correct Windows disk number in Disk Management. EA documents the following process:

mbr2gpt /validate /disk:X /allowFullOS

Replace X with the actual disk number. Do not copy disk:0 automatically. Proceed only if validation succeeds:

mbr2gpt /convert /disk:X /allowFullOS

mbr2gpt changes the disk’s partitioning arrangement; it is not a casual firmware toggle. If validation or conversion fails, stop and consult the PC or motherboard manufacturer rather than repeatedly trying commands.

Switch from Legacy or CSM to UEFI

After a successful GPT conversion—or if the disk was already GPT—enter firmware and change the boot configuration from Legacy or CSM to UEFI. The exact label may be Boot Mode, CSM, Legacy Boot, or UEFI/Legacy.

Do not make this change merely because Secure Boot is unavailable. First confirm the disk layout and have a recovery plan. A system can support UEFI hardware while Windows is still configured to boot through Legacy mode.

How to enable Secure Boot

Enter UEFI from Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Recovery.
  3. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  4. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings.
  5. Select Restart.

Some older systems use a manufacturer-specific startup key instead. Consult the exact PC or motherboard manual if the UEFI Firmware Settings option is missing.

Use the firmware menu

  1. Confirm the boot mode is UEFI, not Legacy or CSM.
  2. Open the Boot, Security, or Authentication section.
  3. Set Secure Boot to Enabled.
  4. If available, set OS Type to Windows UEFI mode.
  5. If the system asks for Secure Boot keys, choose the option to load or restore the factory/default keys.
  6. Save changes and restart.

Some firmware requires an administrator or BIOS password before Secure Boot can be changed. Do not delete keys or select custom-key options unless you understand the boot chain and your manufacturer’s instructions.

Troubleshooting common problems

Problem What to check
Secure Boot says Unsupported Check the motherboard or PC specifications, firmware updates, UEFI capability, and whether the system is genuinely too old. Do not assume a TPM accessory will add Secure Boot support.
Secure Boot is greyed out Disable Legacy/CSM, confirm UEFI mode, load factory Secure Boot keys, and check whether the firmware requires an administrator password.
BIOS Mode says Legacy Check the Windows disk. If it is MBR, back up your data and validate an MBR-to-GPT conversion before changing boot mode.
The disk is MBR Use mbr2gpt /validate first with the correct disk number. If validation fails, follow manufacturer guidance.
TPM is not ready Check for Intel PTT, AMD fTPM, or a manufacturer security-device setting. Consult the exact model documentation.
Windows will not boot after enabling Secure Boot Return to UEFI, temporarily disable Secure Boot, and try to boot Windows. Restore the previous working configuration and contact the manufacturer before making further changes. Microsoft provides recovery guidance for disabling Secure Boot.
Battlefield 6 still reports Secure Boot disabled Recheck msinfo32, verify TPM readiness, restart Windows again, and confirm that the game is running from the normal Windows installation rather than an incompatible boot arrangement.
Linux or another operating system no longer starts Secure Boot may reject an unsigned or untrusted bootloader. Check the distribution’s Secure Boot documentation and use a properly signed boot chain where possible. Do not assume every dual-boot setup will break, but do not disable Secure Boot permanently without checking alternatives.
A BIOS update seems necessary Identify the exact motherboard or PC model, use only the manufacturer’s instructions and firmware files, ensure stable power, and do not interrupt the flash process. An update may improve compatibility but is not a guaranteed fix.

Dual-boot, Linux, and BitLocker considerations

Secure Boot can affect Linux, older Windows versions, unsigned boot software, and third-party bootloaders whose signatures are not accepted by the firmware trust configuration. Microsoft notes that some operating systems may require Secure Boot to be disabled. A signed bootloader and the distribution’s documented Secure Boot procedure may allow dual-booting without turning it off.

If Windows uses BitLocker or device encryption, firmware and boot changes can prompt for the recovery key. This is a precaution to take before changing settings, not a claim that every Battlefield 6 setup will trigger recovery.

Does Secure Boot affect gaming performance?

Secure Boot is a startup-security feature, not a graphics-quality or frame-rate setting. EA does not publish evidence in the supplied Battlefield 6 requirements that enabling it changes FPS. Do not expect it to improve performance, and do not assume it reduces performance without relevant testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do you need new hardware?

Most compatible PCs need no purchase: the issue is often that UEFI, TPM, GPT, or Secure Boot is disabled or configured incorrectly.

Consider a major upgrade only when the motherboard genuinely lacks UEFI Secure Boot support, TPM 2.0 is unavailable through firmware or supported hardware, the manufacturer has no compatible firmware path, or the machine also fails Battlefield 6’s published CPU, GPU, memory, storage, or operating-system requirements. A new motherboard may also require a compatible CPU, memory, Windows activation or reinstallation planning, and other compatibility checks.

Microsoft has also described a Secure Boot certificate transition in which certificates issued in 2011 begin expiring in June 2026, with updates planned for supported Windows devices. That is relevant background for boot-chain behavior during 2026, but it should not be treated as the automatic cause of every Battlefield 6 Secure Boot error.

Final checklist

[ ] Windows is 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11
[ ] TPM 2.0 is ready for use
[ ] BIOS Mode is UEFI
[ ] The Windows system disk is GPT
[ ] Secure Boot State is On
[ ] Battlefield 6 launches without the EA warning

If all six checks pass and the game still refuses to launch, use EA Help and your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support channel. If the machine cannot provide UEFI Secure Boot or TPM 2.0, the limitation is hardware or firmware-related rather than a missing Windows setting.
