In Stardew Valley, the Seed Maker is a crafted machine that turns eligible harvested crops into seeds. You unlock its recipe at Farming level 9; each processing cycle takes 20 in-game minutes. This guide covers the Stardew Valley machine specifically, since other games—including Story of Seasons—use the same name for different machines and mechanics.
How to get the Seed Maker in Stardew Valley
Reach Farming level 9 to unlock the crafting recipe. It requires 25 Wood, 1 Gold Bar, and 10 Coal, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki. The wiki also lists a Seed Maker as a reward for completing the Dye Bundle and as a possible find in a Skull Cavern treasure room, so crafting is not the only reported way to obtain one.

What can you put in the Seed Maker?
The machine accepts harvested crops and four specific foraged items: Wild Horseradish, Spice Berry, Common Mushroom, and Winter Root. Other forageables are not accepted. The wiki lists exclusions including fruit tree fruit, Blackberry, Coconut, Coffee Bean, Crocus, Crystal Fruit, Fiddlehead Fern, Salmonberry, Sweet Pea, Tea Leaves, and Wild Plum.
Put one eligible item into the machine to start a cycle. Processing takes 20 in-game minutes; the game’s day clock does not pause while the machine runs.

How many seeds does it make?
For an eligible crop, the community-maintained Stardew Valley Wiki reports the following output odds. These are reported game-mechanics figures, not independently verified here:
| Result | Reported chance | What you receive |
|---|---|---|
| Seeds of the input crop | 97.51% | 1–3 seeds; the listed average is about two |
| Mixed Seeds | 1.99% | 1–4 Mixed Seeds |
| Ancient Seeds | 0.5% | One Ancient Seeds pack |
The outcome is random, so one crop is not guaranteed to return seeds of its own type. The wiki estimates that, on average, about 51% of the output needs to be reinvested to provide seed stock for the next processing cycle. That estimate reflects the listed odds across repeated use, not a promise about any individual crop.

What to know about versions and predictable output
The Seed Maker’s version history notes that Stardew Valley 1.6 changed game randomization and removed a Seed Maker exploit. Do not rely on old exploit-based advice to predict or control a particular output. The probabilities above are those reported by the wiki; they have not been independently checked against current game code here.

Guides for Story of Seasons describe separate machines with different acquisition paths and outputs. The following details apply only to the named games, not to Stardew Valley.
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
Ushi No Tane describes receiving a Seed Maker through Daryl’s friendship event. It is installed by the storage warehouse and turns a crop into two bags of seeds of the same quality rank. The guide also says it typically costs 30,000 G and becomes orderable after earning 100,000 G and speaking with Takakura. See Ushi No Tane’s A Wonderful Life guide for that game’s details.
Story of Seasons (Nintendo 3DS)
In the Nintendo 3DS game Story of Seasons, Ushi No Tane describes a Seed Maker Shed blueprint sold by the Silk Country vendor for 40,000 G. Its listed construction materials are 10 Small Lumber, 15 Lumber, 5 Brick, and 5 Turnip Seeds. Crops must be dried before threshing; the guide says each crop yields nine seeds of matching Star Rank. These requirements and results belong to the 3DS game only. See Ushi No Tane’s Nintendo 3DS guide.
