It is a curated collection rather than a complete console library, with modern features such as save states and rewind. In Europe and on PlayStation, the collection is commonly called SEGA Mega Drive Classics; Xbox uses SEGA Genesis Classics. Its digital availability has since changed, so a new purchase may depend on the platform and region.
When did Sega Genesis Classics launch, and what platforms received it?
The collection launched May 29, 2018, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. SEGA announced the PS4 release date in March 2018, and contemporaneous launch coverage included all three platforms. The naming varies by region and storefront: European and PlayStation materials commonly use SEGA Mega Drive Classics, while Xbox uses SEGA Genesis Classics. SEGA’s PlayStation.Blog announcement and Xbox Wire’s launch announcement document the releases.

How many games are included?
SEGA’s official wording is “over 50 titles.” GamesBeat reported the more precise count of 53 games at launch; that exact count is the outlet’s report, not SEGA’s phrasing. The collection spans action, platform, role-playing, fighting, and puzzle games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Gunstar Heroes, and ToeJam & Earl. GamesBeat’s launch report identifies the package as 53 games and notes omissions.
Games named in SEGA’s PS4 announcement
SEGA Europe Community Manager Ibrahim Bhatti’s announcement lists the following titles. The official list preserves the published spellings, including “VectorMan 2.” See the announcement for its original presentation.

What modern features does the collection add?
The collection adds conveniences and presentation options that were not part of the original games. Availability can vary by title and platform.
- Save states: Save progress outside the original games’ built-in save systems.
- Rewind: Reverse recent gameplay to retry a difficult moment.
- Control customization: Adjust controls to suit your preference.
- Visual options: Apply enhancement filters, including display treatments intended to evoke older screens.
- Mirror mode: Flip the game horizontally for a different challenge.
- Multiplayer: Supported games can be played locally or online, though not every title supports multiplayer.
- Platform-specific extras: The PlayStation announcement describes a 3D bedroom interface and trophies; Xbox includes achievements.
Online play has separate platform conditions: the PlayStation Store listing says online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, and the current Xbox listing says online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. Check the relevant listing for the terms that apply to your account and region: PlayStation Store and Xbox product page.

Is the collection complete?
No. It is a selection of games, not the full Genesis/Mega Drive library. GamesBeat specifically called out Sonic & Knuckles and two Ecco games as omissions. The collection’s size should therefore not be read as a promise that every well-known Genesis game is included.
Can you still buy or play Sega Genesis Classics?
New digital availability is not assured. SEGA Support’s notice, updated November 19, 2025, says selected classic games and bundles would be delisted from digital storefronts beginning December 6 at 11:59 p.m. PST. The notice includes the Mega Drive and Genesis Classic Bundle on Steam and SEGA Mega Drive Classics for Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. A listing remaining visible does not establish that a new purchase can be completed in every territory; check the local storefront before buying. SEGA’s delisting FAQ has the current notice and platform details.

Physical editions
SEGA’s launch material documented physical editions for PS4 and Xbox One. That confirms those editions existed, but it does not establish current retailer stock, price, condition, or regional availability. Verify the seller and edition before purchasing a used or remaining physical copy. SEGA’s press materials documented the launch editions.

What did it cost at launch?
GamesBeat reported a $30 launch price in 2018. This is a historical reported price, not a current price or an indication of present availability. SEGA Genesis Classics is also distinct from the SEGA Genesis Mini: the former is a game collection for other platforms, while the latter is a separate retro console.
