Self-Hosted Plausible vs Google Analytics 4 in 2026: Which Fits a Game Website?

Self-hosted Plausible CE offers privacy-focused, aggregated analytics without a software subscription, but you operate the entire stack. GA4 provides deeper web-and-app events and marketing integrations at the cost of consent, governance, and potential measurement gaps.

For most privacy-conscious game websites, self-hosted Plausible Community Edition (CE) is the better default when the team can operate Docker and only needs reliable, aggregated traffic and conversion trends. Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the better choice when cross-platform event analysis, detailed attribution, or Google’s marketing integrations are essential. Plausible CE has no software subscription, but it is not maintenance-free: you own the server, databases, reverse proxy, backups, upgrades, security, capacity, and uptime.

The short answer for game publishers and studios

The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on who will operate the measurement system and what decisions the data must support.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Question Self-hosted Plausible CE Google Analytics 4
Primary model Aggregated, privacy-focused website analytics Event-based measurement across websites and apps
Best fit Publishers, documentation sites, indie studios, public-sector projects, and small SaaS teams that want clear web trends with minimal visitor data Teams needing detailed event schemas, web-and-app analysis, attribution, and a broad marketing ecosystem
Software fee No subscription fee for the AGPL-licensed Community Edition Google offers the standard GA4 property without a subscription fee; implementation and governance still have costs
Infrastructure You provide and operate the server, databases, HTTPS proxy, backups, monitoring, and capacity Google operates the analytics service; your team operates tagging, consent, access controls, and data governance
Privacy posture Designed not to process personal data, individual profiles, persistent identifiers, IP addresses, device fingerprints, or cookies Requires a consent, retention, regional-processing, and governance review appropriate to your jurisdictions and implementation
Typical reporting Understandable totals, sources, pages, goals, and trends without user-level profiles Flexible events, parameters, audiences, funnels, attribution, and web/app paths

For a game launch page, patch-notes site, wiki, or documentation portal, aggregated answers such as “Which campaign sent visits?” and “Did the pre-order button convert?” are often enough. For a free-to-play game with a website, mobile app, store listing, and paid acquisition, GA4’s event model is usually more appropriate.

What the two products actually are

Plausible Community Edition

Plausible Community Edition is the free, self-hosted, AGPL-licensed release. It uses the same codebase as Plausible’s managed Cloud service, but CE places operation of that code on you. Its dashboard is intentionally centered on aggregated web metrics rather than individual visitor profiles.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Plausible states that it does not process personal data or track individual users. Its published compliance description says the service collects no personal data, IP addresses, device fingerprints, persistent identifiers, or cookies. That architecture can make a cookie banner unnecessary for Plausible’s own analytics purpose in many implementations, but your legal team must still review every other script, advertising tag, embedded service, and jurisdictional rule on the site.

Google Analytics 4

GA4 is Google’s event-based generation of Analytics. Instead of treating a pageview as the center of the model, it records events with parameters. A game studio can define events such as demo_download, wishlist_click, newsletter_signup, trailer_play, or support_ticket_submitted, then analyze them across a website and app.

This flexibility is valuable when marketing, product, and user-acquisition teams need shared audiences, campaign attribution, or connections to Google’s advertising and reporting products. It also creates more implementation and governance work: event names, parameters, consent behavior, retention, access permissions, and deletion procedures all need an owner.

What self-hosting Plausible requires

Plausible’s self-hosting guide requires Docker, an x86_64 CPU with SSE 4.2, DNS control, and a server capable of running the supplied stack. The Docker Compose deployment creates PostgreSQL for account and application data and ClickHouse for statistics. SMTP is required so the installation can send account and system email.

For teams that want to place this stack on a VPS, Antihost’s Linux VPS with its one-click Docker image provides full root access; the self-managed setup leaves the Plausible deployment and its ongoing operations with you.

Plausible does not terminate SSL itself. Put an HTTPS reverse proxy in front of the application, issue and renew a certificate, and forward traffic to the container stack. A DNS record for the analytics hostname must point to that proxy before you test the public endpoint.

An x86_64 mini PC or virtual private server can satisfy the CPU requirement. Do not assume that an ARM board, including a Raspberry Pi, is compatible: the documented requirement is x86_64 with SSE 4.2, and ARM support would need separate verification.

Operational responsibilities

  • Install and configure Docker, Compose, DNS, SMTP, and the reverse proxy.
  • Size storage and CPU for your pageview volume, retention period, and reporting latency.
  • Back up PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, configuration, and secrets; test restoration rather than merely creating backup files.
  • Monitor disk growth, memory, CPU, container health, certificate expiry, SMTP delivery, and response time.
  • Apply security updates and Plausible releases, including any schema migrations.
  • Plan for outages, failed upgrades, compromised credentials, and a replacement server.
  • Document who can access the host, database, dashboards, and exported data.

Plausible describes self-hosting as “a real commitment.” That is the key cost distinction from Cloud: the license is free, but reliable operation is not automatic.

Deployment path: a practical CE checklist

The exact Compose file and environment variables change with releases, so use the current self-hosting guide for syntax. The operational sequence is stable:

  1. Choose the host. Select an x86_64 machine with SSE 4.2, enough persistent storage for PostgreSQL and ClickHouse, and network access for package, container, DNS, and SMTP operations.
  2. Install Docker and Compose. Apply the host operating system’s security updates, create a restricted administration path, and avoid exposing database ports to the public internet.
  3. Create the DNS record. Point an analytics subdomain such as stats.example-game.com to the host or load balancer. Confirm that propagation has completed before certificate issuance.
  4. Configure SMTP. Supply a sender address and SMTP credentials that can deliver login, invitation, and system messages. Test delivery to more than one mailbox.
  5. Deploy the supplied stack. Start the Compose services so PostgreSQL and ClickHouse initialize alongside Plausible. Keep secrets outside public repositories and restrict file permissions.
  6. Place an HTTPS reverse proxy in front. Terminate TLS at the proxy, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, forward the required headers, and configure certificate renewal. Verify that the proxy does not cache authenticated dashboard responses.
  7. Create the first account and site. Add the production hostname, select the goals you actually need, and copy the generated tracking snippet into the site template or tag manager.
  8. Validate collection. Visit a staging page, check that a pageview appears, trigger each goal once, and confirm that no unintended query strings or personal fields are being sent.
  9. Automate backups and monitoring. Schedule database and configuration backups, send failures to an alert channel, and perform a documented restore test before relying on the system for launch reporting.
  10. Write an upgrade runbook. Pin releases by semantic-version tag, read migration notes, snapshot or back up first, test in staging, then apply the production update during a maintenance window.

The self-hosted edition is described as a slower long-term release, while Cloud receives continuous updates. Pinning a version improves repeatability, but it also means someone must track security notices and decide when to upgrade.

Privacy, cookies, and legal review

Does Plausible need a cookie banner?

Plausible’s published design uses no cookies, persistent identifiers, IP addresses, device fingerprints, or personal data for its analytics. Therefore, Plausible’s own page-measurement script may not require consent under rules that distinguish privacy-preserving, strictly necessary measurement from tracking. That is not a universal exemption for the whole page: advertising pixels, embedded video players, chat widgets, affiliate scripts, account systems, and other analytics can still require consent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the exact scripts enabled on each game property and have counsel assess the applicable law. A consent manager can still be useful for the other technologies even when Plausible is loaded without a consent gate.

What changes when you self-host?

Self-hosting gives you control over the server country and network path. Plausible’s managed-service description says its data is processed and stored on EU-owned infrastructure and does not leave the EU. With CE, you choose the provider and region; a location or support arrangement may not meet your organization’s GDPR or other legal requirements. The privacy architecture of the software does not remove your duties as the operator.

Plausible says visitor data is irreversibly hashed, encrypted in transit, backed up daily, and exportable as aggregated CSV or through the stats API; enterprise customers can receive scheduled raw-event exports. For CE, you must decide how backups and exports are protected, how long they are retained, and who may access them.

Why traffic totals can disagree

Consent banners and ad blockers can materially change reported totals. In one Plausible comparison of a GA4 property with around 115,000 users, GA4 failed to capture 55.6% of traffic compared with Plausible when consent banners were shown. Plausible explicitly says the result varies by site and consent setup; it is not a neutral benchmark that predicts every implementation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

The mechanisms are straightforward:

  • A consent mode may prevent the GA4 tag from firing until a visitor agrees.
  • Browser extensions and privacy browsers can block Google’s collection endpoints or tag libraries.
  • Different definitions of a session, engaged visit, user, and pageview produce different totals even when both tags fire.
  • GA4 may model some gaps, while Plausible reports the events its independently configured script receives.
  • Server outages, ad-block lists, proxy rules, and duplicate tags can affect either system.

When comparing products, pick one operational definition—such as successful HTML responses or a server-side release event—and document which visitors are eligible for each tool. Do not present one dashboard’s number as a universally true count.

Feature and measurement trade-offs

Capability Self-hosted Plausible CE GA4
Aggregated page and source reporting Core use case; simple and readable Available, with more configuration overhead
Custom events and parameters Possible for goals and dashboard reporting, but intentionally narrower Core model with extensive event and parameter schemas
Web-and-app analysis Primarily website analytics Designed for websites and apps together
Marketing funnels Not included in CE Supported through event and exploration workflows
User journeys Not included in CE Supported through event-path analysis
Ecommerce revenue goals Not included in CE Supported with ecommerce event implementation
SSO Not included in CE Availability depends on Google account and organization controls
Sites API Not included in CE Google provides APIs and exports subject to its product limits
Bot filtering Basic filtering in CE Filtering and configuration options in GA4; results depend on implementation
Individual profiles Not the product’s goal Can support user-scoped analysis where lawful and configured, with governance obligations

Cloud-only omissions matter for larger game operations. Plausible lists marketing funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO, and the sites API among features not included in CE. Cloud also provides advanced bot filtering, whereas CE has basic filtering.

Cost: “free” software still has a total cost

CE has no subscription fee payable to Plausible. Your bill can still include compute, storage, bandwidth, a CDN, backups, monitoring, email delivery, incident response, security work, and engineering time. A high-availability setup may need a second host, external database or storage, load balancing, and tested failover. A small internal server may be cheaper in cash but more expensive in staff time and outage risk.

There is no honest universal total-cost number: traffic volume, retention, availability targets, region, backup policy, and labor rates dominate the result. Calculate at least these line items:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Monthly host and storage charges at current and launch-peak traffic.
  • Backup copies in a separate failure domain and the cost of restoration testing.
  • Monitoring, alerting, CDN, DNS, and SMTP services.
  • Hours per month for patching, upgrades, capacity reviews, and incident response.
  • The business cost of missing analytics during an outage or failed migration.

Plausible Cloud charges a subscription because it supplies managed infrastructure, backups, security, maintenance, continuous updates, and support. Cloud is often the rational economic choice when those obligations would otherwise fall on a developer who should be shipping the game.

Choosing by game-business scenario

Privacy-led publisher or documentation site

Choose CE when the site mainly needs referrers, top pages, downloads, outbound links, and a few conversion goals. A privacy-first architecture can reduce consent friction, but appoint an operator and budget for maintenance before launch.

Indie studio with a small team

CE is attractive if one person already runs Docker and the studio values a compact dashboard. If analytics administration would be an occasional task with no backup coverage, Cloud avoids making a launch-critical service depend on a single engineer.

Free-to-play or live-service game

Choose GA4 when the website is one part of a larger measurement plan spanning app events, acquisition campaigns, and product funnels. Define a consent and retention policy before adding tags; otherwise apparent precision can conceal large consent-related gaps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Public-sector or regulated project

CE can fit a requirement for local hosting and minimal visitor data, but the operator must select a legally suitable region, secure the host, document processors, and prove backup and incident procedures. Self-hosting does not automatically make a deployment compliant.

Large portfolio or high-volume network

Plausible reports that its largest network site receives around one billion pageviews per month. It says a custom Enterprise plan is required above 10 million monthly pageviews and events, more than 10 sites, more than 10 team members, or higher API limits. CE operators should treat those figures as capacity-planning signals and validate their own workload rather than assuming a hosted-plan threshold is a technical ceiling.

A decision framework you can use in one meeting

  1. List decisions, not dashboards. Write the questions the team must answer: launch traffic, trailer engagement, store clicks, campaign return, app activation, or retention.
  2. Mark cross-platform needs. If the answer must join website and app events, GA4 has the more natural model. If it is mostly aggregated website performance, CE may be sufficient.
  3. Assign an operator. Name the person or team responsible for Docker, databases, certificates, backups, upgrades, and incidents. If no name exists, do not choose CE solely because the license is free.
  4. Review consent and geography. Document which tags wait for consent, where data is stored, and what your legal basis is for each measurement purpose.
  5. Estimate missing data. Compare expected server-side releases, consent acceptance, and blocked-browser exposure with what each tool can observe.
  6. Check required features. If you need CE-excluded funnels, journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO, the sites API, or advanced bot filtering, plan for Cloud or another platform.
  7. Run a representative pilot. Instrument a staging or low-risk property, test campaign links and goals, inspect consent behavior, and rehearse a backup restore before committing a major launch.

Common failure modes and fixes

The dashboard is unreachable after deployment

Check DNS resolution, firewall rules, container health, reverse-proxy upstream settings, and certificate status in that order. Because Plausible does not terminate SSL, an error at the proxy can look like an application failure even when the containers are healthy.

Users cannot receive login email

Verify SMTP host, port, encryption mode, credentials, sender authorization, and outbound firewall access. Inspect both the application log and the receiving provider’s rejection message; a successful SMTP connection does not guarantee inbox delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An upgrade fails on a schema change

Stop and restore the pre-upgrade snapshot if necessary. Read the release migration instructions, test the migration against a backup copy, and only then repeat it in production. Do not delete database volumes to force a clean start; that destroys historical statistics.

Traffic suddenly doubles

Look for duplicate tracking snippets, a tag manager firing alongside a hard-coded script, staging hosts sending production data, or bot traffic that CE’s basic filtering did not remove. Compare the affected dates with deploy logs and referrer patterns before changing the dashboard.

GA4 and Plausible disagree

Compare consent eligibility, blocked requests, time zones, hostname filters, event definitions, and duplicate tags. Keep a written measurement specification so a change in one tool is not mistaken for a real change in player or campaign behavior.

Can you run both?

Yes, provided each tool has a defined purpose. A studio might use Plausible CE for a public, privacy-minimal traffic dashboard and GA4 for consented campaign and app-event analysis. Load each script only under its documented consent and governance rules, avoid sending personal data, and label the metrics separately. Never average the totals or treat one as a correction factor for the other; their collection rules and definitions differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dual setup also doubles implementation review and incident surface. Maintain one event dictionary, one ownership record, and one change log. If the team cannot keep both configurations accurate, a single well-governed system is safer than two neglected ones.

Bottom line

Self-hosted Plausible CE is the strongest choice when privacy, data control, and clear aggregated web reporting outweigh convenience, and you genuinely have the skills and time to run Docker, PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, SMTP, HTTPS, backups, upgrades, monitoring, and security. GA4 wins when event-level web-and-app analysis, attribution, and Google ecosystem integrations are central to growth decisions and your organization can handle consent and governance. If Plausible’s model fits but infrastructure ownership does not, managed Cloud removes the operational burden without changing the basic privacy-oriented reporting approach.
