sendmail.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component normally stored in %WINDIR%System32, not a Visual C++, DirectX or .NET runtime file. If Windows reports that sendmail.dll is missing, repair Windows first, then check the Send To and default-mail integration rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
The file is identified as Send Mail and is associated with Windows Explorer’s legacy Send to > Mail recipient function and Simple MAPI-style mail workflows. The SendTo folder may contain a Mail Recipient entry that references sendmail.dll.

A normal 64-bit Windows installation generally uses:
C:WindowsSystem32sendmail.dll
%WINDIR% may be another drive or Windows folder on your computer. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while 32-bit components are handled through %WINDIR%SysWOW64. The names are counterintuitive because of Windows compatibility redirection.

Historical inventories show the component across several Windows generations, including Windows 10, and current Windows 11 module listings also show it under System32. The exact file version can vary by Windows edition, architecture and servicing level.
A copy in a user profile, temporary folder, application download directory or an unrelated folder is not automatically legitimate. Check its location and digital signature before trusting it.

The familiar messages “sendmail.dll was not found” and “the program can’t start because sendmail.dll is missing” are generic loader wording. They do not, by themselves, prove that this particular Windows file is the cause.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Pending servicing updates can repair or replace protected Windows components.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Repeat the check after restarting if updates were installed in stages.
- Test the original application or open File Explorer and try Send to > Mail recipient.
If the error remains, continue with the system-file repair below. Do not manually copy a DLL into System32 at this stage.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most appropriate repair when sendmail.dll is missing from the expected directory, appears damaged, or several Windows features are malfunctioning. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the component source that SFC uses.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. It can pause at a percentage for a while.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application or Send To action again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that corrupt files were found and repaired. If SFC says it repaired files, restart before testing.

Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this fix.
Microsoft’s instructions for using DISM and SFC to repair Windows system files should take priority over third-party replacement downloads.
Fix 3: Check the SendTo folder and default mail app
A broken Mail Recipient action does not prove that sendmail.dll is missing. The shortcut or mail integration can be damaged while the DLL remains intact.

Check the SendTo entry
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:sendto
- Press Enter.
- Look for a Mail Recipient entry.
- If the entry is absent, the SendTo configuration itself may be damaged.
- If it is present, right-click it and inspect its properties without deleting or replacing system files.
Some Windows installations use a reference resembling:
Mail [email protected],-4
Do not type that reference into a random file or download a similarly named DLL. It is an indication of the Windows mail-recipient integration, not an instruction to register the DLL.
Check the default mail application
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the mail application you intend to use.
- Set it as the default for the available mail-related protocols and file associations that it supports.
- Open the mail program directly and confirm that it is configured with an account.
- Test Send to > Mail recipient again.
The exact settings depend on the Windows release and mail client. If the mail program’s MAPI integration is damaged, use its official Repair, Modify or reinstall option. Reinstalling sendmail.dll alone will not repair a broken mail client.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Restore a file only when it is the legitimate Windows copy in the expected system directory and its Microsoft signature is valid.

- Open Start > Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Open the alert involving
sendmail.dll. - Review the detected path, threat name and action.
- If the item is clearly a legitimate, correctly signed Windows file and the detection is demonstrably false, use the available restore or allow option.
- Restart Windows and run SFC again.
- If the path is unusual, the signature is invalid or the alert identifies malware, do not restore it. Choose removal or quarantine and run a full scan.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause it to be detected again. When in doubt, let DISM and SFC restore the protected component instead of allowing an unknown copy.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
Do not swap files between System32 and SysWOW64.
On 64-bit Windows:
%WINDIR%System32normally contains native 64-bit system components.%WINDIR%SysWOW64supports 32-bit Windows components and applications.
Windows uses file-system redirection so that compatible applications see the system files intended for their architecture. A 32-bit application can therefore behave differently from a 64-bit application even on the same PC.

To inspect the file:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%WINDIR%System32in the address bar. - Search for
sendmail.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Review the Digital Signatures tab if available.
- On the Details tab, check that the description and company identify Microsoft Windows.
If the file is missing, let Windows repair it. If it exists but has an invalid signature, an unexpected location or a suspicious modification date, scan the system rather than replacing it manually.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem began immediately after installing software, a driver or a system update, System Restore may reverse the change.

Create a restore point. - Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Click System Restore.
- Select a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Click Next, review the affected programs and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the application and Send To integration.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings and installed programs while it is designed not to remove personal files. It is not a substitute for malware cleanup or a backup.
If the issue clearly follows a display, storage or other hardware driver update, open Start, search for Device Manager, expand the relevant device category, right-click the device and select Properties > Driver. Use Roll Back Driver only when it is available and the timing is clear. Do not change unrelated devices.
Hunting through Device Manager for a stale driver is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; its driver installation features require the full version, and a driver update is not the definitive fix for a damaged Windows component.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, use Windows’ repair-reinstall options rather than a DLL website.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now if it is offered.
- Follow the prompts and keep the PC connected to power.
- After the reinstall, restart and test again.
Microsoft describes this option as reinstalling the current Windows version while preserving apps, files and settings.
If that option is unavailable, use official Windows installation media and select the repair or upgrade path that explicitly preserves personal files and applications. Read each screen carefully. A clean installation is not the first choice when the goal is only to repair a system DLL.
Why regsvr32 does not fix this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 sendmail.dll
regsvr32 is for self-registering DLLs that export DllRegisterServer. The documented exports for this Windows component include DllGetClassObject and DllCanUnloadNow, not DllRegisterServer.

The resulting message can say:
The module "sendmail.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message means registration is not supported. It does not prove that the file is corrupt.

There is no verified Microsoft standalone sendmail.dll download package. DLL-index websites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build or the wrong architecture, and copying a file into System32 often leaves the damaged component store, dependencies or mail integration untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Windows recovery, installation media or the official installer for the affected mail application. Never overwrite a protected Windows DLL manually.
Also note that another product can contain an unrelated SendMail.dll, including third-party SMTP software. A same-named file from another program is not a replacement for the Windows component.
FAQ
Is sendmail.dll malware?
The legitimate Windows copy is a Microsoft component in the Windows system directory and should have a valid Microsoft signature. A copy in a profile, temporary folder, C:WindowsMedia or an application directory requires separate investigation. Scan suspicious copies before opening or restoring them.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX or .NET?
No verified evidence connects this Windows file to those runtimes. Installing them is not the default remedy for a sendmail.dll error.
Why does Send to > Mail recipient fail when the file exists?
The SendTo entry, default mail client, MAPI integration or a dependency may be damaged. Check shell:sendto, repair the mail application and run DISM followed by SFC.
Should I copy a 32-bit file into System32?
No. Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64. Allow Windows servicing or the affected application’s official installer to provide the correct architecture.
What if Windows still reports the file as missing?
Run Windows Update, DISM and SFC in that order. If SFC cannot repair the file, use the Windows recovery reinstall or installation-media repair path that preserves your apps and personal files.
