Its audiovisual craft gives the journey unusual intensity, but its moment-to-moment gameplay is comparatively limited. That tension matters: the presentation supports the story, yet spectacle alone will not satisfy players looking for deep combat or broad mechanical freedom.
Is Hellblade 2 worth playing?
For players drawn to tightly directed, story-led adventures, yes. Ninja Theory makes the experience feel deliberate and immersive through its visuals, sound and performances. The game’s central draw is not a sprawling world or a deep systems-driven challenge; it is following Senua through a cinematic story that engages with her experiences of psychosis.
That focus is also the main caveat. Push Square’s review of the Enhanced PS5 version praises the presentation but calls the gameplay detrimentally basic. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict, but it reflects the tradeoff to consider: the craft of the presentation is stronger than the variety of play for some players.
Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Players who value atmosphere, audiovisual immersion and a closely directed narrative.
- Players comfortable with an adventure whose mechanics serve the story rather than compete with it for depth.
- Returning fans who want to see the next chapter of Senua’s journey.
Who may want something else?
- Players seeking extensive combat systems, open-ended exploration or a wide range of activities.
- Anyone who needs a game’s appeal to come primarily from mechanical challenge rather than presentation and narrative.
Is Hellblade 2 mostly story or gameplay?
It is best approached as a cinematic story adventure. The visual and sound design are central to how the game creates mood and draws attention to Senua’s experience. Gameplay is present, but the critical concern is that its moment-to-moment variety and depth may feel modest beside the production’s ambition.

This balance is a matter of preference, not a simple quality score. Limited mechanics can help preserve a controlled pace and focus, but they also mean players should not expect a highly flexible action game. The question is whether the story and presentation are enough to carry the experience for you.
Do you need to play Senua’s Sacrifice first?
Hellblade II is the next chapter of Senua’s story, so playing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice first is the clearest way to arrive with the character and her journey already in mind. The available official materials establish the sequel relationship, but do not promise that newcomers will receive a full recap. If you are new to the series, starting with the first game is the safer choice for narrative context.

What is the story about, and how does it handle psychosis?
The story follows the fictional Senua and engages with her experiences of psychosis. Ninja Theory’s launch statement identifies those experiences as a theme of the narrative. That establishes the developer’s intent; it does not by itself establish clinical accuracy or predict how any individual player will respond.
The game should be understood as fiction, not as a diagnosis, treatment or substitute for mental-health care. Players who are concerned about how its themes or presentation may affect them should consider that subject matter before playing.

What changed in the Enhanced version?
The Enhanced update launched on August 12, 2025, alongside the PS5 release. Its features vary by platform, so do not assume that every performance or controller feature is shared between Xbox, PC and PS5.

Is Hellblade 2 on PS5, and is it included with Game Pass?
Yes. Xbox’s current listing includes Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5, and advertises Game Pass access. PlayStation also lists the PS5 version. Whether a subscription includes the game, and which purchase or subscription options appear, can depend on the live store listing and region; verify those details before buying or subscribing.
The original release arrived on May 21, 2024, for Xbox Series X|S, PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Game Pass. The PS5 release followed with the Enhanced update on August 12, 2025. For the current platform and access routes, use the Xbox game page rather than relying on older launch coverage.

The PlayStation Store listing reports 26 accessibility features. That is the store’s listing count, not a guarantee that the game will suit every player’s needs. Review the individual options on the live listing and in the game before deciding whether they address your requirements.
How should you choose a platform?
Choose based on access and the features that matter to you, rather than assuming one version is identical to another. Xbox advertises Game Pass access and specifies a Series X Performance mode; PlayStation’s listing calls out PS5 and PS5 Pro optimization, haptics and accessibility options. Check the current storefront for PC-specific details, regional availability and the options attached to the version you plan to play.
Because sound is a major part of the presentation, headphones may help you focus on the audio. They are optional, not a required peripheral, and no particular model is endorsed here.
Verdict: a storytelling masterwork with a clear tradeoff
Hellblade II earns the “storytelling masterwork” description through the way its cinematic presentation and focused narrative work together—not because its gameplay is equally expansive. If you want a carefully shaped, atmospheric journey centered on Senua, it is a compelling next chapter. If you want deep, varied mechanics, its limitations are likely to matter more than its visual and audio achievements.
