Yes, some 7 Days to Die mods let unmodified players join. The dependable pattern is a server-loaded XML modlet that changes game data or rules while reusing models, textures, sounds and animations already included in the vanilla client. A documented example extends a vanilla zombie class, changes health and experience values, and adds spawn rules; players do not download that mod, and Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) can remain enabled.
Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
The boundary is the assets and runtime code a mod introduces. XML edits to server data can be delivered by the server, but custom models, textures, sounds, icons, Unity AssetBundles and most compiled-code systems require coordinated client installation. Treat “server-side” as a description of where a mod starts, not a guarantee that every player can connect without files.

What “server-side” means in 7 Days to Die
A dedicated server loads its own Mods folder when it starts. A modlet can alter the server’s XML definitions for entities, spawning, loot, progression, recipes, trader data and balance values. The server then sends the resulting game data to connecting clients when the game supports that type of synchronization. This is why an XML-only change can work without a manual client install.
The safe definition is narrower than “anything installed on the server.” A no-install mod must avoid references to files that the vanilla client does not already possess. If the server asks a client to draw a new model, load a new texture, play a new sound or display a new icon, that client needs the corresponding asset. If the mod changes the client runtime with compiled code, the client and server normally need the same code-aware setup as well.

The 7D2D Wiki summarizes the key test this way: an entity is server-side as long as it does not introduce new assets such as models, textures or sounds. Its documented result is that players join without installing the mod while EAC stays on. That guidance applies to the asset boundary, not automatically to every UI, code or crossplay scenario.
The quick compatibility test
Use the following matrix before installing anything. It separates the common mod categories by what the server can provide and what each player must have locally.
| Mod content | Typical examples | Client install? | EAC expectation | Practical verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XML-only changes using vanilla definitions | Health, damage, loot, progression, recipes, spawn groups and balance values | Usually no | Can remain enabled when no code or new assets are involved | First category to test for a no-install server |
| New entity inheriting a vanilla class | A tougher zombie that reuses an existing model and animation set | Usually no | Can remain enabled according to the documented server-side example | Works when every referenced asset already exists in the client |
| Custom visual or audio assets | Models, textures, sounds, icons and other files in a Resources package | Yes | Depends on the mod, but EAC status does not remove the download requirement | Not a no-install mod |
| Unity AssetBundles | Bundled prefabs, materials, meshes or effects | Yes | Do not assume EAC compatibility | Client files are required |
| Client UI files | New windows, icons or layouts that rely on local assets | Usually yes | Author-specific | Treat as client-required unless explicitly documented otherwise |
| Harmony, C# or DMT code | Compiled runtime hooks and code-driven overhauls | Normally coordinated client/server setup | EAC-off operation is associated with this code layer | Do not classify as server-only without author documentation |
| Total conversions and large overhauls | New progression systems, environments and asset packs | Yes | Often requires a matched setup | Separate category from simple XML modlets |
“Usually” in the table is deliberate. The game version, platform, mod structure and author’s implementation can change the outcome. The only reliable proof is a clean connection test with an unmodified client on the same build.
XML changes that normally work without a client install
Entity properties
XML can modify an existing entity’s health, damage, movement-related values, experience reward and other defined properties. Because the client already knows the entity class and its presentation, the server is changing data rather than supplying a new visual package. A server administrator can therefore tune difficulty without asking every player to copy files.
Spawn groups and encounter rules
Spawn-group edits can change which vanilla entities appear, where they appear and under what conditions. Adding a spawn rule for an entity the client already knows is fundamentally different from introducing a creature with a new mesh or animation. Keep the references pointed at existing entity IDs and existing groups unless the mod documentation explains an additional client dependency.
Loot, progression and recipes
Server XML can adjust loot entries, crafting recipes, progression requirements, experience values and related balance data. These are attractive no-install changes because they alter rules rather than presentation. A recipe that uses existing items is a safer candidate than one that adds a new item with a custom icon.
Balance values
Damage, costs, stack sizes, harvest yields and similar numerical settings can often be changed with a modlet. The same caution applies to every reference: changing a value on an existing definition is safer than creating a definition that points to assets absent from the vanilla installation.

How a vanilla-inherited entity stays server-side
A common pattern is to create a new XML entity entry that inherits from a vanilla zombie class. The new entry can assign different health and experience values and then be added to spawn groups. Rendering still uses the model, textures and animations already installed with the game. The server supplies the changed data, while the client supplies the visual resources it already owns.
This pattern has limits. Inheritance does not magically make every child property safe. If the child definition overrides a model, material, texture, sound, icon or effect with a new file, the no-install assumption ends. Even a small visual override can turn a previously server-only mod into a client download.
- Safe direction: inherit a vanilla class and change numeric properties, tags, spawn entries or other data that point to existing definitions.
- Risky direction: assign a new prefab, mesh, texture, audio clip, icon or AssetBundle path.
- Required check: confirm that the mod package contains no new client assets and that every XML reference resolves to content in a stock installation.
What requires a client installation
Models, textures and sounds
The official 7 Days to Die mod-structure guidance distinguishes XML data from assets. XML-based changes can be pushed from the server to the client, but item icons and asset bundles are not pushed and must be installed on the client. The same practical rule applies to custom models, textures and sounds: the client needs the files to render or play them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIcons and item presentation
A new item may appear in server data, yet its icon is a client-side resource. If the icon is not already part of the vanilla game, players need the mod’s icon file locally. Do not infer no-install support merely because the item’s properties are defined in XML.
AssetBundles and Resources folders
Unity AssetBundles package runtime assets such as prefabs, meshes, materials and effects. A mod distributed with AssetBundles or a Resources directory should be treated as client-required unless its author provides a specific, tested exception. The presence of these folders is a practical warning during inspection.
UI modifications
UI changes are mixed. A server-side value can affect what the game displays using an existing interface, but a new panel, icon, layout file or client-only script requires local files. The available documentation does not establish a universal exception for every UI mod. Require explicit author documentation and test with a clean client before promising no installation.
Overhauls and content packs
Overhauls generally change more than server data. They may add assets, alter progression, patch runtime behavior or replace large portions of the game’s content. Dedicated-server guidance treats client and server content as matched where required. Unless the author labels a specific component as server-only and documents its limits, assume an overhaul needs installation on every participating client.

Compiled code, Harmony, DMT and EAC
The modding guidance places Harmony and C# in the code layer and identifies EAC-off operation for that layer. Compiled code can alter runtime behavior in ways XML cannot, but it also changes the compatibility and trust model. A server running a code mod does not automatically transmit the code to an unmodified client.
Treat compiled code, DMT packages and total-conversion systems as requiring a coordinated client/server setup. Both sides may need the same files, launch configuration and EAC setting. If a mod author documents a narrower server-only implementation, follow that documentation exactly; otherwise, do not advertise the mod as a no-install option.
- XML-only does not mean code-free by filename alone. Inspect the package for DLL files, Harmony patches, DMT instructions or other runtime components.
- EAC being enabled is a consequence of staying in the data-and-vanilla-assets pattern, not a guarantee that every mod with XML files is safe.
- Turning EAC off may be necessary for code mods, but it does not solve missing models, sounds, icons or bundles on clients.
Crossplay, consoles and platform limits
Do not promise console crossplay from the phrase server-side alone. One hosting-provider guide states that any mod disables crossplay, while the official pages used for this compatibility guidance do not publish a universal rule covering every XML-only mod. Crossplay behavior can depend on the game build, platform and the specific server implementation.
Check the current build-specific documentation for your platform before opening the server to console players. A mod that works for unmodified PC clients may still be unsuitable for a console or crossplay session. Record the exact game version, platform mix and EAC state when testing, because those details determine whether a result can be reproduced.
Installing a server-only XML modlet
Use this procedure for a mod that the author identifies as XML-only and that contains no new client assets.
- Inspect the package. Confirm that it contains XML data and a properly structured mod folder, not custom models, textures, sounds, icons, AssetBundles, Resources content or compiled code. If the author lists a client dependency, stop treating it as a no-install mod.
- Stop the dedicated server. Do not copy or replace mod files while the server is actively loading them. Stopping first prevents partial reads and makes the next startup a clean test.
- Open the server’s Mods directory. Use the Mods folder belonging to the dedicated-server installation, not a random client profile directory. Keep each mod in its own subfolder.
- Copy the complete mod folder. Preserve the author’s folder structure. The official documentation requires each mod to have its own folder so the game can identify it separately.
- Check ModInfo.xml placement. ModInfo.xml must be directly inside that mod’s folder. If it is nested one level too deep, the game may not recognize the mod through its Mods interface.
- Start the server. Watch the startup log for the mod’s name, successful loading messages and XML parse errors. A server that starts while silently skipping the folder is not a successful installation.
- Connect with a clean client. Use a client with no copy of the mod installed and the same game version as the server. This is the decisive no-install test.
- Exercise the changed content. Spawn or encounter the affected entity, craft the changed recipe, check the altered loot or verify the progression rule. Confirm that the server behavior changed and that the client renders it using vanilla assets.
- Repeat after updates. Re-test whenever the game, dedicated-server build or mod changes. XML paths, APIs, EAC behavior and crossplay rules can change between builds.
How to prove players really need no files
A player joining successfully is only the first check. A mod can appear harmless while a rarely used asset fails later. Use a test plan that covers both connection and gameplay.
- Start from an unmodified client profile. Do not leave an old copy of the mod in a client Mods folder.
- Join the server, then trigger every changed feature: the new spawn, altered loot table, recipe, progression threshold or balance rule.
- Watch for missing-icon warnings, invisible entities, pink or untextured surfaces, missing audio, disconnects and client log errors.
- Test a fresh player and an existing save where the mod changes progression or loot. Save data can hide whether the rule is currently active.
- Repeat with EAC enabled if the mod is supposed to support it. A test performed with EAC disabled does not prove EAC-on compatibility.
- Document the exact server build, client build, platform, EAC state and mod version alongside the result.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server does not list or load the mod
Check that the mod has its own folder under the server’s Mods directory and that ModInfo.xml is directly inside that folder. Look for an extra nested directory created when extracting a zip archive. Then restart the stopped server and inspect the startup log for the folder name and XML errors.

An XML parse or path error appears
Verify that the XML is valid and that its XPath targets still exist in the current game build. A path written for an earlier build may no longer match. Remove the mod, confirm that the vanilla server starts, then add it back after correcting the path or obtaining an updated release.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Players connect but an entity is invisible or untextured
The mod is referencing a client asset that the clean client does not have, or it points to an invalid asset name. Remove the mod from the no-install category, install the required client files on every participant or replace the custom reference with an existing vanilla asset.
Players disconnect when a feature is used
Inspect both server and client logs at the moment the feature is triggered. Check for missing icons, sounds, bundles or unsupported XML properties. Test with only this mod enabled so another package does not mask the cause.
EAC blocks the session
Determine whether the package includes Harmony, C# or another compiled component. If it does, follow the author’s EAC instructions and assume coordinated installation is required. Do not simply disable EAC and continue calling the mod server-only; that changes the security and compatibility conditions.
Crossplay stops working
Crossplay support must be verified for the exact build and platform combination. Remove the mod and retest an otherwise identical server. If crossplay returns only when the mod is absent, treat the mod as incompatible with that crossplay configuration even if PC clients can join without installing it.

Use a narrow mod set
XML-only modlets are easier to audit when each change has its own folder and purpose. Separate loot, progression, spawning and balance edits where possible. If one package fails after an update, you can disable that folder without dismantling the entire configuration.
Keep backups and a rollback path
Back up the server’s save and Mods directory before updates. Record which folders were active and which game build they were tested against. To roll back, stop the server, remove the suspect folder, restore the previous tested files and start again while checking the log.

Read every release note
Compatibility can change when XML paths, mod APIs, EAC behavior or crossplay rules change. A mod that was server-only on one build may require a client file on another. Do not infer continued support from an old successful test.
Tell players exactly what is required
Publish the server build, active mod names, EAC state, platform limits and whether a clean client was tested. If a mod is XML-only but crossplay has not been verified, say so instead of promising console access. Clear requirements prevent players from troubleshooting a missing file that the server was never designed to provide.
Choosing between competing mods
When two mods promise similar gameplay changes, compare them on the dimensions that actually affect joining and maintenance.
| Question | Why it matters | Preferred answer for no-install play |
|---|---|---|
| Is the package XML-only? | DLLs, bundles and client files change the installation model. | Yes, with no hidden code components. |
| Does it reuse vanilla assets? | Existing client assets can render without a download. | Every model, texture, sound and animation comes from the stock game. |
| Does it add icons or UI files? | Icons and client layouts are not supplied by ordinary XML synchronization. | No new icon or client-only UI dependency. |
| Can EAC stay enabled? | Code-layer mods commonly require EAC-off operation. | Author and testing confirm EAC-on behavior. |
| Is it documented as server-only? | Folder contents alone may not reveal runtime requirements. | Specific server-only instructions and a clean-client test. |
| Does it support your platform mix? | PC-only behavior does not establish console or crossplay support. | Explicit, build-specific confirmation. |
| How does it behave after updates? | Broken XML paths can prevent loading or corrupt gameplay rules. | Recent maintenance and clear version notes. |
The trade-off is straightforward: no-install convenience favors data edits and vanilla presentation. Custom visuals, new audio, elaborate interfaces and deep runtime changes provide more creative freedom but move the mod toward a coordinated client/server installation.
Examples: safe candidates and automatic red flags
Usually safe candidates
- Increase the health and experience reward of an existing zombie class.
- Add an existing vanilla zombie to a spawn group under different conditions.
- Adjust the quantity or chance of existing loot entries.
- Change a recipe that uses existing items, stations and icons.
- Alter progression requirements or numerical balance values without adding presentation files.
Automatic red flags
- A new model, texture, sound, animation, icon or prefab is included.
- The package contains Unity AssetBundles or a Resources folder.
- The instructions require copying files into every player’s client Mods directory.
- Harmony, C#, DMT or DLL files are present.
- The mod is described as a total conversion, overhaul or content pack.
- The author promises console or crossplay support without identifying the tested build and platform combination.
What server administrators should tell players
A concise server notice can prevent most confusion: state that the server uses XML changes only, that players should join with a clean client, that the listed game build must match, and that the server’s crossplay status is limited to the platforms actually tested. If the configuration later gains a custom icon, AssetBundle or code patch, update the notice before players connect.
Also explain that no client download does not mean no gameplay impact. Server-side loot, progression, spawn and balance changes affect everyone in the world. Players may encounter altered entities or recipes immediately even though their local installation remains unchanged.

The most common mistake is judging a mod by its extension rather than by its dependencies. An XML file can reference a missing icon. A new entity can inherit a vanilla class yet override its sound. A server can load a mod successfully while a client fails only when the changed object appears. Conversely, a modest XML balance edit can be genuinely server-only and EAC-compatible.
Use the asset test, the folder test and the clean-client test together. The asset test asks whether every visual and audio reference already exists in the vanilla client. The folder test asks whether the server recognizes the mod through its own folder and ModInfo.xml. The clean-client test asks whether an unmodified player can connect and use every changed feature on the same build. Only all three support a dependable no-install claim.
