How to Join a Minecraft Bedrock or Pocket Edition Server

A complete guide to joining Minecraft Bedrock servers, including the former Pocket Edition mobile version, external server setup, console limits, Realms, friend worlds, requirements, and troubleshooting.

The short version: open Minecraft, choose Play, open Servers, then select a featured server and press Play. On Windows PC and mobile, you can also scroll to Add Server and enter an administrator-provided address and port. “Pocket Edition” is the former name commonly used for the mobile version; it is now part of Minecraft Bedrock Edition.

The right connection method depends on who operates the world. A featured server is selected from Minecraft’s own list, an external community server requires an address and usually a port, a friend’s ordinary world appears only while the host is playing, and a Realm uses an invitation. The steps below separate those options so you do not enter a Java address in a Bedrock menu or look for a console feature that is not supported there.

What “Bedrock” and “Pocket Edition” mean

Minecraft has two separate multiplayer ecosystems. Bedrock Edition is the cross-device edition used on Windows PC, phones and tablets, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. The mobile release once marketed as Pocket Edition is now a Bedrock version, so a current phone or tablet player should follow Bedrock instructions.

Java Edition is a different edition with different servers. A Bedrock player normally needs a Bedrock server, Realm, friend world, or LAN game; a Java player needs a Java-compatible destination. Having the same Minecraft account does not make a Java server and a Bedrock server interchangeable. Ask the administrator specifically whether the destination accepts Bedrock players before troubleshooting your device.

Menu wording can move slightly after game or platform updates. The labels below describe the current Bedrock flow: Play, Servers, Add Server, Add and play, and Add server.

Check these requirements before connecting

  • Matching edition: everyone must be using Bedrock for a Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game.
  • Current game version: update Minecraft to the newest release available on each device. A version mismatch can prevent a connection.
  • Reliable connection: use a stable internet connection for online servers and Realms, or a working local network for LAN play.
  • Microsoft account: console and mobile multiplayer requires the player to be signed in. Child accounts also need multiplayer permissions enabled in the account’s family settings.
  • Console online service: online multiplayer on Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch requires the applicable subscription: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online.
  • Correct destination details: for an external server, obtain the exact address and, if specified, the port from its administrator.

A domain name and an IP address both work as a server address when the administrator provides them. Do not substitute a Java server address for a Bedrock one, and do not assume that every server uses Bedrock’s documented default port. Have the account you actually intend to play with signed in before accepting a friend invitation or Realm invitation; an invitation sent to another Microsoft account will not appear on the current account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are playing on a console, check the platform subscription before diagnosing Minecraft itself. A healthy server cannot bypass a missing Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online entitlement. Child-account family settings can also block multiplayer even when the game, internet connection, and server are all working.

Join a featured Bedrock server

Featured servers are the simplest option because they appear inside Minecraft’s own Bedrock server browser. You do not have to type an address or port, and the listing provides the first description to review before joining.

  1. Start Minecraft Bedrock on your device.
  2. On the title screen, select Play.
  3. Open the Servers tab.
  4. Select a listed featured server to view its description, rules, and any entry information.
  5. Choose Play or the server’s join button.
  6. Accept any online-safety or permission warning that Minecraft presents.

A server may download a required resource pack before you enter. Allow the download to finish; declining a pack can leave you unable to see or use the server as intended. Read the server description and rules before chatting, trading, or spending in-game currency. The featured list is the supported public-server route on consoles, so it is also the practical answer for Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch players who do not have a private invitation.

Add an external server on Windows PC or mobile

Windows Bedrock and mobile Bedrock support a manual server entry. This is the route for a community server that is not in the featured list, provided the administrator allows Bedrock connections.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask the server administrator for the Bedrock server’s address. It may be a domain name or a numeric IP address.
  2. Launch Minecraft and select Play.
  3. Open Servers and scroll to the bottom of the list.
  4. Select Add Server.
  5. Enter a memorable name in Server Name. This is only your local label.
  6. Enter the administrator’s value in Server Address.
  7. Enter the supplied value in Port. Minecraft Help documents 19132 as the default Bedrock port, but an administrator can configure a different port.
  8. Select Add and play to save the server and connect immediately, or select Add server to save it without joining.

Type the address exactly as supplied. Do not add quotation marks, a web-page prefix, or spaces. If the administrator supplied only an address and no port, ask whether the server uses the default rather than guessing. A server can be online while still refusing connections on the wrong port.

Save the entry after a successful connection so you do not have to retype it. If the operator later changes the address or port, edit or replace the saved entry rather than creating several nearly identical entries. The name field does not affect authentication, permissions, or the name other players see; it is simply your label for recognizing the destination.

What to enter in each field

Field What belongs there Common mistake
Server Name Any label you will recognize, such as the community’s name Assuming this label changes the public server name
Server Address The domain or IP address supplied by the administrator Using a Java-only address or adding extra characters
Port The port supplied by the administrator; 19132 is the documented Bedrock default Replacing a custom port with 19132

The address identifies the server computer or service, while the port identifies the Bedrock connection endpoint on it. That is why both values matter when an operator gives you both. A web address that opens a site in your browser is not automatically the game address; copy the game address from the administrator’s instructions.

Can you add a custom server on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch?

In the normal console Servers menu, official help limits console versions to the featured servers shown there. Do not expect the same Add Server fields available on Windows PC and mobile, and do not rely on an unofficial workaround as if it were a supported feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a console, use the featured list for public servers. For a private game, use a supported friend world or Realm invitation. The exact online-service requirement still applies: Xbox requires Game Pass Core, PlayStation requires PlayStation Plus, and Switch requires Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer. If a console player receives an external address from a community administrator, the normal Servers menu still does not provide the PC/mobile manual-entry route; ask whether the community offers a featured listing or use an invitation-based option instead.

Join a friend’s live world

A friend’s ordinary world is controlled by the host’s device. The world is generally joinable only while that friend is playing and has multiplayer enabled.

  1. Make sure both players are Minecraft friends through their Microsoft accounts and are online.
  2. From Minecraft’s title screen, select Play.
  3. Open the Friends tab.
  4. Find the host under Joinable Friends.
  5. Select the friend’s world to join.

If the host closes the world or goes offline, it will no longer appear as joinable. This is different from a dedicated server, which can remain available without one particular friend staying in the world. Both players still need compatible Bedrock versions and the appropriate account and platform permissions. If the friend is online but missing from Joinable Friends, check that the host enabled multiplayer and that both accounts are signed in as intended.

Join a Realm

A Realm is an invitation-based Bedrock world. The Realm owner supplies the invitation or the information needed to join; you cannot discover a private Realm by browsing the public server list.

  1. Ask the Realm owner to invite the Microsoft account you intend to use.
  2. Sign in to that account on your Bedrock device.
  3. Open Play and use the invitation or Realm entry supplied by the owner.
  4. Accept the invitation and select the Realm when it appears in your worlds or friends area.

The owner controls who can enter. If the invitation was sent to a different account, signing out and into another account may be necessary before the Realm appears. A Realm is designed to remain available without the owner actively playing, unlike an ordinary friend-hosted world, although access still depends on the Realm’s status and the invited account’s permissions.

Choose the right way to play

Option Who controls the world How you enter Availability Persistence
Featured public server The server operator Play → Servers → choose a listing Bedrock devices with the featured-server menu; consoles use this supported public route Typically available independently of your friends’ devices, subject to the operator’s status
External public or community server The server operator On PC/mobile, Add Server with address and port Manual entry is supported on PC and mobile; normal console menus are featured-only Depends on the operator’s hosting and maintenance
Friend’s world Your friend hosting locally Play → Friends → Joinable Friends Bedrock multiplayer where the accounts and platform services permit it Usually available only while the host is online
Realm The Realm owner Invitation or Realm join information Use the supported Bedrock Realm flow on your device Designed to remain available without the owner actively playing, subject to the Realm’s status

Use a featured server when you want the fewest setup steps. Use manual entry when an administrator has supplied a specific community address and you are on PC or mobile. Choose a friend world for a session together now, and choose a Realm or dedicated server when the world needs to persist between sessions. In every case, review the operator’s rules and avoid sharing account credentials.

Fix “Unable to connect to world”

The message is generic: it can indicate a mistyped destination, an offline host, an account restriction, a version mismatch, or a problem on an independently operated server. Work through these checks in order.

1. Recheck the address and port

Compare every character with the administrator’s message. Confirm that the address is for Bedrock, not Java, and that the port is correct. 19132 is the documented default, not a universal value. If the server owner gave a custom port, use that value exactly. Confirm that you entered the number in the Port field rather than appending it to the address in an unsupported format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Confirm the destination is online

A friend-hosted world cannot be joined while the host is offline. Ask the friend to open the world and verify that multiplayer is enabled. For a third-party server, check the operator’s own status notice: Minecraft support cannot guarantee the availability of an independently run server. A server may be restarting, full, temporarily closed, or undergoing maintenance even when your internet connection works.

3. Update every player’s game

Install the newest Minecraft release on the joining device and the host’s device. A friend world can fail when the host and joining player are on different versions, and a server may reject a client that it no longer supports. After updating, fully restart Minecraft before testing the connection again.

4. Check the Microsoft account and permissions

Verify that the intended Microsoft account is signed in. For a child account, multiplayer permissions must allow online play, joining multiplayer games, and communication as appropriate for the family settings. An invitation sent to another account will not appear on the account currently in use. If the account was recently changed, sign out and back in so the correct friends and Realm invitations can refresh.

5. Check console online access

On a console, verify that the applicable online subscription is active: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. Also confirm that the console is connected to the internet and that the platform account has not been restricted from online multiplayer. A subscription issue can affect featured servers, friend worlds, and Realms alike.

6. Check server-specific rules

An independently operated server may require a whitelist, a particular Bedrock version, an accepted resource pack, or an account registration step. Read the operator’s instructions and status page. A Minecraft menu can be working normally while that specific server is full, restarting, whitelisted, or configured for another edition. Contact the administrator if the address and port work for other players but not for you.

7. Retry after removing obvious local errors

Close and reopen Minecraft, then try the saved entry again. If you created multiple entries while correcting the address, remove the incorrect one so you do not keep selecting it. Reconnect only after confirming the final address and port with the administrator. Keep a note of the working values so a later reinstall or device change does not lead to another transcription error.

Safety and account privacy

  • Use Minecraft’s featured-server descriptions and rules as your first source when selecting a public community.
  • Never give a server operator your Microsoft account password, one-time security code, or recovery information. A legitimate server connection needs an address and game permissions, not your account credentials.
  • Keep chat, multiplayer, and communication permissions appropriate for the player’s age. Child-account settings can block a connection even when the server itself is healthy.
  • Read rules before downloading optional files or following links posted in chat. A required in-game resource pack is not a reason to disclose account credentials.
  • Leave a server and report it through the relevant platform or account-safety channel if it asks for passwords, security codes, or suspicious downloads.

If you want a persistent world

A friend’s normal world depends on that friend being online. A Realm or an independently operated dedicated Bedrock server is a better fit when players need a world that remains available between play sessions. Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation covers downloading the server software, starting it, and connecting from the server list. Hosting requirements, network setup, access controls, and maintenance depend on the chosen setup, so follow the current documentation for the version you install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dedicated server also makes the operator responsible for uptime, updates, player permissions, backups, and rules. Those responsibilities are different from simply joining a featured listing. If you only need occasional sessions with friends, a friend world may be simpler; if players need access while the host is away, use a Realm or dedicated server instead.

Quick decision guide

  • Want the fastest public option? Use Play → Servers and choose a featured listing.
  • Have an address and port from a community administrator? On Windows PC or mobile, use Add Server.
  • Playing with a friend right now? Open Friends and select that person under Joinable Friends.
  • Need the world available when the owner is away? Use an invited Realm or a dedicated server rather than a friend’s ordinary local world.
  • On Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch with a custom address? The normal console Servers menu is limited to featured servers; use the supported featured, friend, or Realm path instead.

Why does Minecraft say “Unable to connect to world”?

Check the Bedrock address and port, confirm the server or host is online, update every player’s game, verify Microsoft-account multiplayer permissions, and check the required console subscription. Third-party servers may also be whitelisted, restarting, full, or configured for another version.

Do I need a Microsoft account to play multiplayer?

Console and mobile multiplayer requires Microsoft-account sign-in. Child accounts also need multiplayer permissions enabled in family settings.

Do consoles require an online subscription?

Yes, online multiplayer requires the applicable service: Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online.

The Bottom Line

For most players, choose Play → Servers and select a featured Bedrock server. On Windows PC or mobile, use Add Server with the exact address and port, remembering that 19132 is only the documented default. Use Friends for a host-online session and an invited Realm or dedicated server for a persistent world. Keep the edition, game version, account permissions, and platform subscription aligned before troubleshooting.
