To loop one gaming VOD indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before its -i input and use -c copy to pass through its existing audio and video streams. For a sequence of VODs, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer with files that have matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Neither method converts or repairs media: first check that your files already meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.
Check whether your VODs are suitable for stream-copy
Stream-copy avoids decoding and re-encoding: FFmpeg passes the compressed packets through, so it does not impose re-encode quality loss and usually uses less processing than encoding. It cannot apply filters or change a source stream’s codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe spacing. A file may also be unsuitable for the output container or YouTube even if FFmpeg can read it. See FFmpeg’s documentation on stream-copy and input options.
Before building a command, inspect every file you plan to use. Record its container, video and audio codecs, number and layout of streams, time bases, duration, and timestamps. The concat demuxer is especially strict about matching streams, codecs, and time bases. No general command can guarantee compatibility for an uninspected gaming VOD.
You can use ffprobe to inspect a file’s stream and format metadata:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json "gameplay.mp4"Review the output rather than assuming that an .mp4 extension establishes compatibility. Check that the streams you intend to send are present and that each clip has the same relevant stream structure. If the values differ, test carefully or prepare compatible files before concatenating.
Match the copied streams to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 as supported video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). These are platform recommendations and supported options, not settings FFmpeg will apply in copy mode. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a live session.
For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. Examples from its 2026 guidance are:

These figures apply to the named H.264 profiles, not every codec or resolution. If a VOD’s encoded properties do not suit the profile you want to send, -c copy cannot make them conform. Your choices are to keep the original streams and accept their existing properties if YouTube accepts them, or re-encode or otherwise prepare a compliant source outside the no-re-encode workflow.

Loop one VOD continuously
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option: -1 means repeat indefinitely. Put it before the -i it applies to. The following is a command pattern, not a tested guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, or container:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "gameplay.mp4" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"-rereads the input at its native rate, which is useful when sending a file as a live feed rather than as fast as the machine can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats this input without a set end.-i "gameplay.mp4"selects the local VOD.-c copycopies the streams without decoding and encoding.-f flvexplicitly selects the common RTMP/RTMPS output container. It does not guarantee that the copied streams are valid for that container or YouTube."RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"is illustrative only. Use the server URL and stream key YouTube gives you; never publish or share a real key.
Confirm that the file’s streams can be muxed into the chosen output and that its codecs and encoded properties fit your YouTube stream configuration. If FFmpeg reports that the output cannot contain a source stream, or YouTube rejects or flags the feed, stream-copy cannot fix the underlying incompatibility.

Play several VODs in order with the concat demuxer
For a playlist, the concat demuxer presents files sequentially as one input. It is FFmpeg’s documented no-re-encode concatenation route when the files meet its matching-stream requirements; it is not the same as the concat filter. See the concat demuxer documentation and the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating media files.
1. Create the ordered list
Make a text file called vods.txt in the directory where you will run FFmpeg. Put each input in the intended playback order, using paths valid from that directory:

file 'vods/final-match.mp4'Use paths that the concat demuxer can read and quote correctly, especially if filenames contain special characters. Do not include files with mismatched stream layouts, codecs, or time bases and assume the demuxer will normalize them.

2. Send the sequence as a live feed
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i "vods.txt" -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"-f concat selects the concat demuxer, and -safe 0 permits paths that the demuxer’s safe-path rules would otherwise reject. Only use it with a list you control. As with the single-file pattern, validate the output format, source streams, and YouTube settings for your actual files before relying on the command.
The demuxer advances timestamps based on file durations. If a duration is inaccurate, artifacts may occur; if streams within a file have unequal durations, gaps can result. A transition that is technically concatenated is not necessarily seamless to watch or listen to. Try the sequence locally or in a private or unlisted test stream and check both picture and audio, including transitions and loop points.

- Set up the YouTube live session. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that session into your encoder configuration. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in public commands, screenshots, articles, shared logs, or support posts. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Check upload capacity. Your connection needs stable upload bandwidth above the outgoing stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom and testing before the event. Its streaming tips explain bandwidth and network preparation. Other traffic on the connection can reduce the capacity available to the live feed.
- Test and monitor. Start with a private or unlisted session where possible. Check the picture, game audio, transitions, stream health in Live Control Room, and whether the feed stays connected. A local test can catch file and timestamp problems but cannot establish that YouTube will accept a live ingest.
An FFmpeg process that loops forever is not the same thing as an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. The process must remain running, the server must remain connected, and the live session must be configured and healthy. Stop the FFmpeg process when you want to end the feed. YouTube’s setup guidance says live streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; consult its current encoder setup page for the platform’s archive and session details.

What stream-copy gives up compared with re-encoding

The title’s no-re-encode goal works only when preserving the files’ existing stream properties is acceptable and compatible with the output. If YouTube needs a different codec or encoded profile, re-encoding is the option that can change those properties.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the output or reports a codec/container error: Check the source codecs and streams against the selected output format. Stream-copy cannot convert a codec or repair an unsupported muxing combination. Choose a compatible output/source combination or prepare the file with a different workflow.
- The concat list fails to open: Check that
vods.txtis in the expected working directory, that every path is correct, and that filenames with spaces or special characters are quoted appropriately. Use-safe 0only with a list you control. - Concatenation fails or produces broken transitions: Compare the files’ stream count and layout, codecs, and time bases. The concat demuxer expects these to match. Check file durations and timestamps; inaccurate durations can create artifacts, and unequal stream lengths can create gaps.
- YouTube reports ingest or stream-health problems: Verify the server URL, stream key, selected protocol, and YouTube Live Control Room setup. Check that the copied codecs and properties fit the chosen ingest profile; changing an FFmpeg command to
-c copydoes not make a nonconforming source compliant. - The stream disconnects or becomes unstable: Check available upload speed and competing network traffic. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom over the stream bitrate; test the connection and monitor Live Control Room health.
- Picture works but audio is missing, delayed, or interrupted: Inspect every file’s audio stream, codec, timestamps, and duration, then test the complete sequence. Do not assume that matching video alone makes a playlist compatible.
