If the error began after an interrupted setup, language-pack removal, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, manual deletion, or a failed uninstall, start with the application repair steps below.
What setupres.dll is
setupres.dll is a real Windows DLL filename, but it is not one unique Windows system file. The description “Setup localized resource module” is associated with Matrox Graphics Inc. SetupRes, and the file may be used by Matrox setup or driver software.
Autodesk also documents SetupRes.dll in installation and uninstallation scenarios involving AutoCAD, Moldflow, SketchBook, Mudbox, and other products. Other installers can use the same basename. That means the filename does not prove that the file belongs to Matrox, Windows, Autodesk, or any particular game.
A setup-resource DLL usually contains localized resources or installer functionality. It is normally loaded by the product’s own setup program from its expected installation or media path. It is not normally repaired by placing a random copy in System32 or by registering it with regsvr32.

Fix 1: Repair the application or rerun its official installer
This is the safest and most likely fix for a Matrox-related setupres.dll error.
Try Windows’ built-in repair option
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
- Find the Matrox application, graphics utility, or driver package that produced the error.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and open the application again.
Windows does not provide Repair or Reset for every traditional desktop application. If the option is absent, use the program’s original installer or download a fresh installer from Matrox’s official support and download area.
If the program is no longer needed, uninstall it instead. If uninstalling fails because setupres.dll is missing, continue to the uninstall section rather than copying in a replacement DLL.
Reinstall from the correct Matrox package
Use the official Matrox package intended for the exact graphics hardware, Windows version, application, language, and architecture.

- Close the Matrox application and any setup windows.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the affected Matrox utility if Windows allows it.
- Restart the computer.
- Obtain the matching installer from Matrox’s official support channel.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete setup without interrupting it.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the application or repeat the operation that originally failed.
A successful repair restores the application’s own files and allows the same setup, launch, update, or uninstall action to complete. If the error returns immediately, do not keep copying DLLs. Record the installer path, error code, and application version for the next diagnostic step.
Fix 2: Update or reinstall the Matrox display driver
If the message appears while installing or opening Matrox graphics software, the driver package may be incomplete or mismatched.
Check the installed hardware
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Double-click the Matrox device.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the driver provider, date, and version.
- Open the Details tab and inspect any path or device information shown for the affected component.
Do not uninstall a working display driver without having the correct replacement package available. If the device has a warning icon, first obtain the matching driver from Matrox’s official support channel.
Reinstall the driver
- In Device Manager, right-click the Matrox display adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you have the correct replacement installer ready.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the official Matrox driver installer as administrator.
- Restart again.
- Test the Matrox utility or setup operation.
If the Matrox device does not appear, select Action > Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager. If it still does not appear, check the physical connection or system documentation before changing drivers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesManually hunting through driver versions can mean comparing hardware IDs, Windows architecture, package languages, and release notes. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan showing which drivers are stale; driver installation is completed by the full version, while the official Matrox package remains the definitive source for this specific device.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine a setup file after an interrupted installation or update.
Check Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
setupres.dllor the Matrox installer. - Open the entry and inspect its path, detection, and action.
Restore a file only when its path, publisher, and digital signature clearly show that it belongs to the installed Matrox product. If the file is unsigned, is in an unexpected directory, or has a suspicious publisher, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
After a verified quarantine event, repair or reinstall the Matrox application rather than relying on the restored file. If security software immediately quarantines the freshly installed file again, contact the software vendor and security vendor with the detection details. Do not disable protection merely to run an unverified DLL.

Fix 4: Correct an installer language or architecture mismatch
A setup-resource DLL can be missing because the installer does not contain the language resources expected by Windows or the product.
Check the following:
- The installer is for the correct Matrox product and graphics device.
- The package supports your Windows release.
- The package matches the application’s architecture.
- The required product language is included.
- The installer was not partially extracted or interrupted.
- The setup files are stored in a local folder rather than being run from an incomplete removable or network location.
On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit application may still require a 32-bit setupres.dll. Do not move a 32-bit file into a 64-bit application directory or assume that a 64-bit Windows installation requires a 64-bit DLL.
Autodesk documents similar failures for SketchBook when the installer does not match the device or operating system, and when a non-English Windows installation lacks the expected language folder. Autodesk also documents a case where removing a product language pack before the main product leaves uninstall files incomplete. Those are product-specific examples, not proof that every setupres.dll belongs to Autodesk.
If the failure concerns a non-English Autodesk installer, follow that product’s official instructions rather than adapting a language-folder workaround to Matrox or another application.

Fix 5: Repair a failed Autodesk uninstall
If the error is shown by an Autodesk product, use the Autodesk-specific path rather than treating the file as a Matrox component.
On Windows 10
- Open Microsoft’s Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed guidance.
- Download and run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
- Choose Uninstalling.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- If several Autodesk entries are listed, process them one at a time.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Reinstall the Autodesk product from its official installer if you still need it.
On Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Autodesk application.
- Open its menu and select Advanced options, if present.
- Choose Repair.
- If Repair is unavailable or fails, use the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter.
- Reinstall the product using the correct official package.
The troubleshooter is particularly relevant when a language pack was removed before the main Autodesk product or when uninstall registration is damaged. A successful run removes the stale product entry or allows the normal uninstall to finish.
Fix 6: Repair Windows only when Windows itself is damaged
Do not begin with SFC or DISM simply because the filename ends in .dll. These tools repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They normally do not reconstruct an application-private Matrox or Autodesk setup DLL.
Use them when several Windows features are failing, Windows Update is damaged, protected system files are reported as corrupt, or the missing file is confirmed to be a Windows component.

- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Check for updates again until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected system files. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports setupres.dll, repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can obscure the real problem. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that identifies reported system issues; repair is completed by the full version, and reinstalling the Matrox or other owning application remains the definitive fix for an application-private DLL.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A setup-resource DLL is normally loaded by its installer and is not made functional through registry registration.
Running commands such as these is therefore not a general solution:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
regsvr32 setupres.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32setupres.dll
If the command reports that the module was loaded but the entry point was not found, that confirms the DLL is not meant to be registered that way. If it reports error 126, the command may also be exposing a missing dependency or incorrect path rather than proving that the DLL itself is the only problem.
Why error 126 does not always mean one missing file
“Failed to load SetupRes.dll (126)” means Windows could not load the requested module. The immediate cause may be:
- The file is absent.
- The application is looking in the wrong directory.
- A dependent DLL is absent.
- The file has the wrong architecture.
- A language resource expected by the installer is missing.
- Antivirus software removed part of the package.
- The application installation is damaged.
This is why copying a same-name file from another computer is unreliable. The replacement may have a different product owner, version, language, architecture, dependencies, or signature.

That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, overwrite a valid product file, or leave the actual installer damage unresolved. It can also hide a missing dependency behind a new error.
Use the owning vendor’s official installer or support channel instead. For Matrox, identify the exact device and product before downloading a driver or utility. For Autodesk, use the official product installer and Autodesk’s documented repair or uninstall guidance. Microsoft’s official Windows Update, app-repair, DISM, SFC, and Program Install and Uninstall resources are appropriate for Windows-level problems.
When Visual C++ Redistributable is relevant
setupres.dll is not itself established as a Visual C++ runtime DLL. Installing Visual C++ Redistributable is not the normal fix for an unidentified setupres.dll error.
Consider Microsoft’s official packages only when the complete error also names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, or when the owning application explicitly requires a particular runtime. Microsoft provides packages named vc_redist.x86.exe, vc_redist.x64.exe, and vc_redist.arm64.exe.
Match the runtime to the application’s architecture. A 32-bit program may require the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Collect the following before contacting Matrox, Autodesk, or the relevant application vendor:
- The exact program name and version.
- Whether the failure occurs during launch, setup, repair, update, or uninstall.
- The full error text and code.
- The complete path where the DLL is expected.
- File Properties, publisher, version, and digital-signature results.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Windows version and architecture.
- Antivirus quarantine details.
- The installer or application log.
If the problem began immediately after a known system change and no official reinstall is available, System Restore can be considered as a last resort. Open Start, search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, and choose a restore point from before the change. Do not use System Restore as the default replacement for repairing the owning application.
FAQ
Is setupres.dll a Windows system file?
Not necessarily. The filename is shared by different products. A Matrox-associated Setup localized resource module is an application file, and Autodesk also documents the same basename. Do not assume that every copy belongs in System32 or SysWOW64.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is setupres.dll safe?
Safety depends on the specific copy. Check its location, publisher, digital signature, and relationship to the program that requested it. A familiar filename alone is not evidence that the file is trustworthy.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only when the complete error identifies a Visual C++ runtime or the owning application requires it. It is not a universal remedy for setupres.dll.
Can I register setupres.dll with regsvr32?
Generally no. Setup-resource DLLs are normally loaded by their owning installer and do not need COM registration.
Why does the error appear during uninstall?
The uninstall program may need files that were removed, quarantined, or separated from a product language pack. Use the application’s repair path or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, then reinstall the product if necessary.
