To clear the flooded Church District in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, enter from Shadow Keep’s eastern approach, cross the rooftops into the cathedral, then use the bat passage and ladder to reach the drain lever. Once the water is gone, explore the lower district for the Scadutree Fragment and use the Prayer Room Key—earned through Fire Knight Queelign’s quest—if you have it.
How to reach the Church District
Approach Shadow Keep from the east. From the Church District Highroad area, follow the road to the Church District Entrance Site of Grace. The district begins flooded, so the first route runs over rooftops and exposed structures rather than through the lower streets. This route is described in Game8’s Church District walkthrough.
- Start at the Church District Entrance Site of Grace and move across the rooftops toward the cathedral.
- Use the arch and pillar route to reach the cathedral roof.
- Drop through the opening in the roof into the building.
How to reach and activate the drain lever
From the cathedral interior, take the lower passage and follow the curved hallway. A Fire Knight patrols this route; avoid drawing multiple enemies into a fight if you can. The lever route branches through a passage with bats and climbs to the canal gate mechanism.
- Follow the lower passage and curved hall from where you landed inside the cathedral.
- Take the first left into the bat-filled passage.
- Cross the bridge and climb the ladder beside the flooded doorway.
- Activate the lever at the top to drain the Church District.
A drop near the lever route leads toward the Sunken Chapel Site of Grace, a useful checkpoint for exploring the area after the water recedes. The route and lever are also outlined in Neoseeker’s Church District walkthrough.

What to do after draining the water
Lowering the water changes which parts of the chapel and nearby rooms you can reach. Return to the lower district and explore the newly accessible spaces rather than trying to collect their contents while they are submerged.
Collect the Scadutree Fragment
In a flooded room off the Fire Knight hallway, a Scadutree Fragment rests in the hand of a large statue of Marika. Drain the water first, then approach the lower room to collect it. Game8’s Scadutree Fragment locations guide identifies the district pickup.
Open the Storehouse connection
An elevator connects this section toward Storehouse, Back Section. Activate the Site of Grace there when you reach it; doing so gives you a convenient return point and can cut down on later backtracking.

The Prayer Room is a locked door on a walkway around the flooded center. You can spot it after dropping through the church roof onto the rafters, but opening it requires the Prayer Room Key from Fire Knight Queelign’s quest. The district is reached by passing through Moorth Ruins and Bonny Village, then following the road to the Church District Entrance. PC Gamer’s Queelign guide describes the key and route.
- Defeat Queelign’s invasion at Belurat, Tower Settlement.
- Defeat his invasion at the Church of the Crusade. Completing both encounters awards the Prayer Room Key; the required key comes from finishing both even if you meet him in the opposite order.
- In the Church District, find the Prayer Room door along the walkway around the flooded center and use the key.
Queelign’s quest ends with a one-way reward choice. Choose based on whether you want a summon or a weapon:
