What are the new weapon types in Shadow of the Erdtree? The expansion adds eight categories: Great Katana, Light Greatsword, Backhand Blade, Beast Claw, Hand-to-Hand Arts, Perfume Bottle, Throwing Blade, and Thrusting Shield. These are weapon classifications, not a count of every individual weapon added. The names are commonly identified as the expansion’s eight types; official sources confirm the overall count and some category names, but do not list all eight together in one place.
What “weapon type” means in Elden Ring
A weapon type is a category, not an individual item. Bandai Namco’s combat guide explains: “When we say weapon type, we’re referring to the classification of the weapon itself.” The type appears beneath a weapon’s name in its information, helping distinguish its category from the particular weapon you have found or equipped.
That distinction matters when counting the expansion’s additions: eight new types does not mean the DLC contains only eight new weapons. The publisher describes the expansion as adding weapons, equipment, weapon skills, and magic beyond the base game, alongside new enemies, boss encounters, and plotlines (Bandai Namco’s ELDEN RING page).

The PlayStation Blog preview establishes the eight-type count. Bandai Namco’s official version 1.14 patch notes use several of the new category names, but the official pages cited here do not present all eight as a single list.
What the category names do—and do not—tell you
The categories identify how the game classifies weapons; their names alone do not establish a complete comparison of reach, attack speed, combos, stat requirements, scaling, damage or status effects, Ashes of War compatibility, or performance in PvE and PvP. The official materials cited here do not provide a side-by-side moveset or build guide for all eight types, so avoid treating a category name as a ranking or a guarantee of how a weapon performs.
Balance can also change between patches. Bandai Namco’s version 1.14 notes document adjustments involving weapon types, which is evidence that performance advice can become outdated—not a description of the current patch. For a ranking or build recommendation, check the game version and whether the claim concerns PvE or PvP.
Check the base-game requirement before buying
Bandai Namco’s Shadow of the Erdtree page states that the expansion requires the ELDEN RING base game. The publisher lists the standalone expansion as well as a Shadow of the Erdtree Edition containing the base game and DLC. Check the current retailer listing for your platform and confirm which format and contents are included before purchasing.
How many people bought Elden Ring?
In its June 21, 2024 launch announcement for Shadow of the Erdtree, Bandai Namco Entertainment America reported that ELDEN RING had sold more than 25 million copies. That is the publisher’s figure at that time, not a current sales total (June 21, 2024 announcement).
