Should You Chop Stumps in Stardew Valley? Hardwood, Axe Upgrades, and Respawns

Chop ordinary stumps on your farm when you want the space or need their Hardwood: each gives 2 Hardwood and 25 Foraging Experience, but it will not grow back. For renewable Hardwood, prioritize the daily stumps in the Secret Woods or on certain farm maps. A Copper Axe removes stumps; reaching the Secret Woods is a separate obstacle that requires a Steel Axe.

What you get for chopping a stump

A large stump yields 2 Hardwood and 25 Foraging Experience. It also has a 10% chance to drop a Mahogany Seed, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Large Stump page. A Copper Axe or better is required to remove it.

On the ordinary farm, treat each stump as a one-time resource and a permanent obstacle: once chopped, it does not respawn. The choice is therefore practical—take the Hardwood and open the space if that is useful, or leave the stump if you prefer the obstacle to remain.

Which stumps come back?

Respawning stumps are tied to particular locations and farm maps. The Stardew Valley Wiki lists these daily yields when every stump in the location is harvested:

Location Respawn Hardwood per full harvest Access or space Axe requirement
Ordinary farm stumps Do not respawn 2 Hardwood per stump Clears the individual obstacle Copper Axe or better
Secret Woods Six stumps respawn daily 12 Hardwood per day Clears the stumps in the area Copper Axe or better for stumps; Steel Axe or better for the entrance log
Forest Farm Eight stumps respawn daily 16 Hardwood per day Clears the stump tiles until they return Copper Axe or better
Four Corners Farm One stump respawns daily 2 Hardwood per day Clears the stump tile until it returns Copper Axe or better

Daily stump counts and Hardwood yields are documented on the Wiki’s Hardwood page; the Secret Woods stump count is also covered on its Secret Woods page. The Secret Woods total is repeatable once you can reach it, while the Forest and Four Corners yields depend on choosing those farm maps.

Stumps and logs need different axe upgrades

Do not confuse a stump with a large log. A large stump needs a Copper Axe or better and gives 2 Hardwood; a large log needs a Steel Axe or better and gives 8 Hardwood plus 25 Foraging Experience. Logs do not respawn. The distinction matters most at the Secret Woods entrance: the blocking log requires Steel, even though the stumps inside can be chopped with Copper.

The Wiki’s Large Log page documents the log’s requirement and yield, while its Secret Woods page describes the entrance. If you are planning upgrades, the Wiki lists a Copper Axe at 2,000g and five Copper Bars, and a Steel Axe at 5,000g and five Iron Bars; see Axes. These are in-game costs documented by the Stardew Valley Wiki, not real-world prices. The cited pages were accessed October 8, 2026; this guide does not establish the game’s current release version.

Should you clear the stumps on your farm?

For most players, the answer depends on whether the space is more valuable than retaining a one-time source of Hardwood. Clear a farm stump if it blocks a useful building spot, crop layout, path, or other plan, or if you need the wood now. If neither the space nor the material matters yet, there is no respawn-based reason to rush: waiting preserves the stump, but it does not make it renewable.

  • You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life.
  • Now with Multiplayer! Invite 1-3 players to join you in the valley! Players can work together to build a thriving farm, share resources, and build relationships with townspeople or each other.

If your main goal is a continuing Hardwood supply, plan around the renewable locations instead. Open the Secret Woods by upgrading to Steel and chopping its entrance log, then harvest its six stumps when they return each day. If you chose Forest Farm or Four Corners, include their daily stumps in your routine. This separates the one-time clearing decision from a recurring resource route.

Quick decision checklist

  • Need space or a one-time 2 Hardwood? Chop the ordinary farm stump with a Copper Axe or better.
  • Want a repeatable Hardwood source? Use the Secret Woods or the renewable stumps on Forest Farm or Four Corners.
  • Can’t reach the Secret Woods? Upgrade to Steel for the entrance log; Copper is enough for the stumps inside.
  • Looking at a large log rather than a stump? It takes Steel, yields 8 Hardwood, and does not come back.
