share.dll is an application file, not a standard Windows system DLL. The best-documented match is Sacrifice, the classic game from Shiny Entertainment and Interplay, but another program may use the same filename for an unrelated binary.
The safest fix is to identify the executable showing the error, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installer or game platform. Do not download a loose copy of share.dll and place it in System32.

1. Identify which program owns share.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Before repairing Windows, find the application that is actually requesting the file. The filename is not unique, so repairing the wrong product can waste time or introduce an incompatible DLL.
Check these details:
- Read the full error message.
- Note the executable named in the window, if one is shown.
- Check whether the error appears when starting
Sacrifice.exe, a launcher, an editor, or another application. - Look for the folder path in the message or in the application shortcut.
- Open that application folder in File Explorer and check whether
share.dllis present. - Note whether the file is missing, or whether Windows says it is corrupted, incompatible, or “not designed to run on Windows.”
A known Sacrifice error reads:
This application has failed to start because share.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

The error can also appear in generic forms, including “The program can’t start because share.dll is missing from your computer” or “The specified module could not be found.” These messages do not prove that the file belongs to Microsoft or that the same binary is involved in every case.
Also check what happened immediately before the problem:
- The game or application was moved to another folder
- A patch or update was interrupted
- Antivirus software quarantined a file
- Disk cleanup removed application files
- The program was only partially installed
- Files from different releases were combined
- An unofficial archive was used
If the error appears only when launching Sacrifice, treat it first as a damaged or incomplete game installation.
2. Repair Sacrifice through its game platform
Time needed: 5–20 minutes, depending on the installation
Sacrifice is the strongest verified real-world match for this filename. Its installed files include share.dll alongside the game executable and other game libraries. The file belongs in the game’s own directory, not in a Windows system folder.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click Sacrifice.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish.
- Start Sacrifice again from the Library.
Steam may report that some local configuration files did not pass verification. That does not automatically indicate a problem because certain local files can legitimately differ. Check specifically whether the game now launches and whether share.dll has returned to the Sacrifice directory.
If verification restores the file but the game still fails, restart Windows and test again. If other game files are also missing, continue with a complete reinstall rather than repeatedly replacing individual DLLs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGOG or an original installer
Use the repair, update, or verification function provided by the official GOG installation or launcher. If no repair function is available:
- Back up saved games if the installer stores them inside the game folder.
- Uninstall Sacrifice.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the official installer associated with your purchase.
- Apply the compatible game patch supplied for that release.
- Launch the game before adding modifications or copied files.
For an old retail installation, reinstall the complete game from the original media and use the correct patch for that release. Do not combine a share.dll from one edition with executables from another.
If reinstalling the complete game restores share.dll and Sacrifice starts, the repair is complete. If the file is immediately removed again, check Windows Security before reinstalling repeatedly.
3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a game DLL, but do not assume quarantine was the cause unless Windows Security shows it.

- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with Sacrifice or its installation directory.
- Confirm that the path is the legitimate game folder.
- If the file is clearly from the trusted installation, follow Windows Security’s Restore option.
- Verify or reinstall the complete game afterward.
Restoring a file is appropriate only after confirming its source and reviewing the detection. If Windows Security identifies the file as malicious, do not restore it. Remove the unauthorized copy and run a full scan instead.
For a deeper check, open Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, and run Full scan. If a suspicious file keeps returning or Windows cannot remove it, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from the same area.
Reinstalling or verifying the application is generally safer than restoring a quarantined DLL manually because it replaces the entire set of files from a trusted package.
4. Reinstall the complete owning application
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use this step when:
- Verification did not restore
share.dll - Several application files are missing
- The installation was copied from another computer
- Files came from an unofficial archive
- The file exists but produces a bad-image error
- The application was moved between drives
- A patch stopped halfway through
Before uninstalling, record the installation folder and back up saved games or configuration files if necessary. Then:

- Delete only the remaining application folder if the uninstaller left damaged files behind.
- Install the application again from its official platform or original installer.
- Apply updates or patches intended for that exact release.

For Sacrifice, a clean installation is the definitive repair when the platform cannot restore the expected files.

Do not copy share.dll from another game, another computer, or a DLL archive. Two files with the same basename can have different contents, dependencies, and architecture.
5. Confirm that the file is in the application folder
Time needed: 5 minutes
A normal application DLL is usually loaded from the folder containing the program that needs it. For Sacrifice, inspect the folder containing Sacrifice.exe.
To locate it:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location.
- Look for
share.dllbeside the relevant executable.
If the file is missing, repair or reinstall the application. If it is present but Windows still reports that it cannot be loaded, the named DLL may not be the only problem. The file could depend on another missing library, be damaged, or belong to a different release.

C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s folder
- A general Windows directory
Those locations are for system components and shared operating-system libraries. Placing an application-private DLL there can cause version collisions, DLL hijacking risks, or no improvement.
6. Handle bad-image and architecture errors
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A message such as “not designed to run on Windows,” “bad image,” or “the application was unable to start correctly” usually means the file is corrupted, incompatible, or from the wrong release.
The old Sacrifice copy is associated with a 32-bit-era game, but do not assume that every file named share.dll is 32-bit or that every copy is interchangeable. The executable and its DLLs must come from the same application release.
Use these checks:
- Remove any manually copied replacement DLL.
- Verify or reinstall the complete application.
- Apply the correct patch for that edition.
- Avoid mixing Steam, GOG, retail, and unofficial files.
- If the program is very old, right-click its executable.
- Select Properties → Compatibility.
- Test an appropriate compatibility setting only after the files are restored.
- Apply the setting and test the application.
Compatibility mode cannot repair a missing or invalid DLL. It is useful only after the installation itself is intact.
Recommended Free Tools
If share.dll is present and the message says “The specified module could not be found,” another dependency may be missing. Repair the entire application rather than assuming the named file is the only missing component.
7. Repair broader Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use Windows repair commands when other Windows features are failing too, system files are damaged, or multiple unrelated applications report startup errors. These commands are not a targeted replacement for a missing Sacrifice DLL.
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image first, then checking protected system files:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Allow the scan to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
The commands may report that no integrity violations were found, that damaged files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. If DISM fails, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. Microsoft documents the procedure in its System File Checker guidance.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing reported system problems, while repairs are performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix when its private DLL is missing.
If SFC and DISM complete successfully but Sacrifice still reports share.dll, return to the application repair steps. Windows repair does not install a verified Sacrifice game file.
8. Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Windows Features can help when an older application requires an optional Windows component, but enabling a feature does not generally provide share.dll.
To review available features:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review the enabled components.
- Select only a feature documented by the application’s publisher.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Do not enable random components as a substitute for repairing the application. There is no verified evidence that share.dll is installed by a particular Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET package, or Windows Feature.
If the program specifically reports a missing runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft’s official download or support pages. Treat that as a separate dependency repair, not as proof that the runtime contains share.dll.
9. Update drivers only for a broader graphics or device problem
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A display or audio driver can cause a game to crash, but it does not normally restore an application-private share.dll. Consider driver repair only if other games show graphics failures, Device Manager reports an error, or the application starts and then crashes during rendering.

- Restart Windows and test again.
For a clean driver repair, obtain the driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not remove a working driver solely because share.dll is missing.
Manually checking several hardware vendors and matching driver versions takes time. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns share.dll.

10. Do not use regsvr32 as a general DLL fix
Time needed: 1 minute
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose missing-file repair command.
A game-support DLL such as the Sacrifice copy should normally be loaded from the game directory and does not need registration. Running:
regsvr32 share.dll
may produce an entry-point error, and it will not recreate a missing file.
Use regsvr32 only when the software’s official documentation specifically says that its DLL is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Otherwise, repair the owning application.

Why share.dll errors happen
The likely cause depends on the application named in the error:
| Situation | Likely explanation | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Sacrifice cannot start and the file is absent | Damaged, incomplete, or patched installation | Verify files or reinstall Sacrifice |
| The file disappeared after a security alert | Antivirus quarantine or deletion | Review Protection history and verify the game |
| The file exists but gives a bad-image error | Corruption, mixed releases, or incompatible architecture | Replace the complete application installation |
| Only one old game fails | Application-private dependency problem | Repair that game, not Windows globally |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Possible Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The file is in an unexpected system directory | Unauthorized copy or malicious replacement | Scan the computer and do not restore it blindly |
| “Specified module could not be found” appears while the file exists | A dependency of the DLL may be missing | Verify the entire application installation |
The attribution sometimes repeated online describes share.dll as part of Microsoft QuickStart Tutorials and gives a particular version and size. That metadata has not been verified through an authoritative Microsoft catalog, installer, or Microsoft download page. It may describe another file with the same name, so it should not be treated as the identity of the Sacrifice DLL or of every share.dll.
Avoid third-party DLL downloads
Do not download share.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can contain malware, belong to another product, use the wrong architecture, be the wrong version, or still fail because another dependency is missing.
Use these sources instead:
- The application’s built-in repair function
- Steam or GOG file verification for a legitimate Sacrifice installation
- The original installer and compatible patch
- Windows Security for quarantine review
- Microsoft’s official Windows repair instructions
- The hardware manufacturer’s official driver support page
The correct source is the complete package that owns the file, not an isolated DLL archive.

Is share.dll a Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file?
No verified evidence shows it as a normal Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component. It is a non-unique application filename.
Does share.dll belong to Microsoft QuickStart Tutorials?
That attribution is repeated by DLL-indexing pages, but no authoritative Microsoft file catalog, installer, or Microsoft download page was verified for it. Do not assume every share.dll has that identity.
Why is Sacrifice the most likely program?
Sacrifice installations contain a local share.dll beside the game executable and related game files. Its documented missing-file error specifically names Sacrifice.exe.
Should I copy share.dll into System32?
No. If an application needs the file, it should normally load its own copy from its installation directory.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
There is no verified evidence that those packages install this particular file. They may be separate dependencies, but repair the owning application first.
What if share.dll is present?
The file may be corrupted, incompatible, from another release, or dependent on another missing library. Verify or reinstall the complete application.
What if the error continues after reinstalling?
Confirm the executable, installation path, and edition. Check antivirus history, inspect launcher or event logs, test compatibility settings for an old game, and contact the distributor. Do not continue swapping individual DLLs.
Can System Restore help?
It is a fallback when the problem began after a known system change and a suitable restore point exists. System Restore can roll back system files and settings, but it is not the first choice for repairing a missing game file.
