sharedat.dll Missing: Rebuild the Legacy Windows App Safely

“This application failed to start because sharedat.dll was not found.”

A sharedat.dll error usually means a legacy application installation is incomplete, damaged, or missing a file after antivirus quarantine. Public file catalogs associate sharedat.dll with the older GTCoach program, attributed to GTek Technologies Ltd., but the safest repair is to restore the complete parent application rather than download the DLL separately.

Which fix applies to you

Use the path that matches when the error appears:

  • When starting GTCoach or another old program: repair or reinstall that application first.
  • After antivirus detected or quarantined a file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • After moving the program, cleaning the disk, or restoring a backup: reinstall the complete application in its original location.
  • When the message names MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or another Microsoft runtime: install the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
  • When several Windows programs fail: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
  • When the error says “entry point not found” or “invalid image”: suspect a wrong or incompatible DLL version, not simply a missing file.
  • When the message appears during startup: locate the obsolete program that launches with Windows and remove or repair that program.

Do not begin by copying sharedat.dll into C:WindowsSystem32. This is an application DLL, not a confirmed Windows component.

What sharedat.dll belongs to

sharedat.dll is reported as a 32-bit Win32 DLL associated with the legacy GTCoach application. Public catalogs list version 1.0.0.27, a size of roughly 52 KB, and a copyright period covering 1998–2003, but these are third-party catalog records rather than currently verified vendor documentation.

That architecture matters. A 32-bit program normally loads 32-bit DLLs, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. The file would normally sit in the application’s own installation folder beside the program executable or among its private supporting files.

The current GT Coach website describes a modern Gran Turismo coaching product. Do not assume it is the same legacy Windows software connected with this DLL.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application

This is the most likely solution.

Identify the program

Look at the title bar or the complete error message. Note the executable named in the message if one is shown. You can also check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps and look for an old launcher.
  3. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  4. Search for GTCoach or the program that produces the error.

If the error appears when launching a shortcut, right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and check the Target path. The folder containing that executable is usually the application’s installation directory.

Try Windows repair

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected program.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Advanced options if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Start the program again.

Not every traditional desktop application provides a Repair button. If it is unavailable, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original installer or a trusted publisher-provided installation source.

Do not copy only the executable to a new computer. Older programs may require several private DLLs, configuration files, runtimes, and registry entries.

Check the installation folder

After reinstalling, confirm that the application’s own folder contains the restored files. Do not move sharedat.dll to System32, SysWOW64, or another Windows directory. A private application DLL in the wrong folder can cause version conflicts and may expose the system to an untrusted file.

  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

If reinstalling produces a different missing-DLL message, record the new filename. It may indicate an incomplete installer, additional legacy dependencies, or incompatibility with current Windows.

Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old application DLL.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review detections from the time the error began.
  5. Expand any detection related to GTCoach, the affected program, or sharedat.dll.

Do not restore the file automatically. A third-party telemetry record has labeled one sampled GTCoach-related sharedat.dll as Trojan.Gen, but that does not prove every historical copy is malicious. It does mean that an unsigned DLL from an unknown source should be treated as untrusted.

If the file came from an original installer, verify that installer first. Scan it with Windows Security, confirm that it was obtained from a legitimate source, and reinstall the application rather than restoring an isolated DLL. Microsoft also warns that restored files may be detected again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Defender repeatedly removes the file, stop using that installation until you have established where it came from. Do not add broad exclusions merely to suppress the warning.

Fix 3: Install the correct Microsoft runtime

Cataloged dependency lists for this old DLL include files such as MFC40.DLL and MSVCRT40.dll. That confirms the program is a legacy native Windows application, but it does not prove which original redistributable package GTCoach used.

Use this fix only when the error names a Microsoft runtime as well, such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, install the x86 package. Windows being 64-bit does not make the application’s dependencies 64-bit. The current Visual C++ package repairs Microsoft runtime files; it does not provide sharedat.dll.

After installation:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Launch the affected application.
  3. If the same sharedat.dll message remains, repair or reinstall the parent application.

Do not download old runtime DLLs individually from file repositories.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components

This is a lower-priority check because sharedat.dll is not identified as a Windows system file. Use it when several applications are failing or Windows itself reports component problems.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.

Run System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer. Try the affected application again.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the program after restarting. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failure points to a broader Windows repair issue, not proof that Windows should contain sharedat.dll.

When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds; its full version performs the repair, but reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix for an application-owned sharedat.dll.

Fix 5: Check compatibility and legacy Windows settings

A program from the Windows 9x or early Windows XP era may not work correctly on Windows 10 or Windows 11 even after its files are restored.

Try compatibility mode:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut or executable.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Compatibility tab.
  4. Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
  5. Choose an older Windows version suggested by the application’s documentation.
  6. Select Run this program as an administrator only if the program requires it.
  7. Select Apply, then OK.
  8. Launch the program.

If the program still fails, use Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if it is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid changing compatibility settings for random DLL files. Apply them to the parent executable.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms are broader

A display or device driver normally does not cause an application-owned sharedat.dll to disappear. Driver work is appropriate when the same incident includes graphics failures, crashes across multiple programs, device errors, or a recent Windows migration.

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category containing a warning icon.
  3. Right-click the affected device.
  4. Select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows.

For a known recent failure, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Otherwise obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.

When checking many devices manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the full version performs installation, but a driver update will not replace an application’s missing sharedat.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use regsvr32 as a missing-DLL fix

Do not run:

regsvr32 sharedat.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Ordinary runtime DLLs do not necessarily support registration, and Microsoft does not describe regsvr32 as a general missing-DLL repair tool.

If you see “entry point not found,” the program may be loading the wrong version of a DLL. Reinstall the parent application and remove conflicting duplicate copies instead of repeatedly registering files.

When no fix works

If you cannot locate a legitimate original installer, do not substitute a random copy of sharedat.dll. DLL download sites websites can provide malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the rest of the application.

At that point:

  1. Back up personal data.
  2. Run a full Windows Security scan.
  3. Remove obsolete startup entries for the abandoned program.
  4. Check whether the application has a newer supported replacement.
  5. Consider replacing the software if it cannot run safely on the current Windows version.

FAQ

Is sharedat.dll part of Windows?

No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with a third-party legacy application and should normally remain in that application’s directory.

Which program uses sharedat.dll?

Public catalogs associate it with legacy GTCoach software attributed to GTek Technologies Ltd. That association is catalog evidence, not a currently verified official vendor support record.

Should I download sharedat.dll?

No. Restore it through the original application installer or a trusted repair process. An isolated download may be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is sharedat.dll 32-bit?

Public catalogs identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. A 32-bit application generally needs x86 dependencies on 64-bit Windows.

Will Visual C++ Redistributable restore it?

No. Visual C++ packages repair Microsoft runtime dependencies. They do not supply application-owned sharedat.dll.

Can I copy it into System32?

No. There is no verified evidence that sharedat.dll belongs in System32 or SysWOW64. Reinstall the parent application in its normal folder instead.

Why does the error mention a missing entry point?

That usually indicates that Windows found a DLL with an incompatible export or wrong version. Reinstall the complete application and avoid mixing DLLs from different releases.
