Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteiprtprio.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with IP routing and related networking components. If Windows reports that iprtprio.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is described as IP Routing Protocol Priority DLL. Microsoft support material places it alongside routing, RRAS, VPN, and other Windows networking components, particularly in older Windows and Windows Server environments. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, ordinary game library, or device driver.

Before you repair anything
Do not copy iprtprio.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded file can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, or dependencies, and it may be malicious. Even a genuine-looking copy does not repair the Windows component store that supplies protected system files.
The safe sources are:
- Windows Update
- Windows component servicing through DISM
- System File Checker
- System Restore
- An official Windows installation source used for an in-place repair
A game or application reinstall is relevant only if investigation proves that the program ships its own copy of this file. The strongest evidence for iprtprio.dll points to Windows routing and networking, not ordinary game middleware.

Where iprtprio.dll should be
On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses separate locations for 64-bit and 32-bit system binaries:
%WINDIR%System32normally contains the 64-bit copy%WINDIR%SysWOW64normally contains the 32-bit copy used by 32-bit applications
This naming can be confusing, but do not move files between the folders manually. The correct copy depends on your Windows build and the application architecture. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
Do not expect one universal file size, version, or hash. Windows servicing levels differ, and public evidence does not establish one current version for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed or incomplete update can leave a Windows networking component damaged or unavailable. Start with Windows Update before running repair commands.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Try the program or networking feature that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft provides the current menu path in its guide to installing Windows updates.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC. Do not repeatedly reinstall the affected application yet.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
This is the most important repair sequence for a missing or corrupted protected Windows DLL. DISM repairs the component store, then SFC uses that repaired source to check and restore protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original program or networking feature again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for missing or corrupted protected Windows files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the problem may be a missing dependency, wrong architecture, blocked file, or application-specific failure. If it reports that it repaired files, restart and test. If it says that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
When DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with a real repair source. The source should match the installed Windows edition, language, and build as closely as possible.
Running these commands manually is useful, but it can be difficult to identify which component changed when repairs keep returning. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies; its repair function is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM/SFC remain the normal Microsoft repair path.
What success looks like
The original error should stop appearing after the restart. If a specific program still reports “The specified module could not be found,” that wording does not prove iprtprio.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or by the program calling it.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged file or occasionally flag a legitimate file incorrectly. Do not restore it immediately just because the filename is familiar.

Windows Security. - Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
iprtprio.dllor Windows networking. - Note the detection name and file path.
- Run a Quick scan, followed by a Full scan if the detection is unclear.
If Microsoft Defender quarantined the file, first verify the path and signature. Restore or allow the file only when you are confident that it is the genuine Windows copy and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft’s Protection history documentation explains the consequences of restoring detected files.
If the file was found in a downloads folder, temporary directory, user-profile folder, or an unrelated application directory, treat it as suspicious rather than restoring it.
Fix 4: Verify the path and Microsoft signature
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
A legitimate Windows copy should normally be in a Windows system directory or the component store. Check the file without replacing it.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
%WINDIR%System32
- Search for
iprtprio.dll. - If you are using 64-bit Windows, also check:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
- Right-click the file if present.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature from Microsoft.
The exact version and size can vary by Windows build, so do not reject a file solely because its metadata differs from a result found elsewhere. An invalid signature, an unexpected path, or a duplicate copy in a temporary or download directory is more important.
You can also check a known path from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:WINDIRSystem32iprtprio.dll"
A valid result does not by itself prove that every dependency is healthy, but an invalid or missing signature is a reason to scan the system and repair Windows through DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Check the networking feature involved
Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
If the error appears while using a VPN, routing tool, RRAS-related feature, or network configuration utility, check whether the relevant Windows feature is enabled.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review features related to networking, remote access, or management.
- Do not enable or disable random features to obtain a DLL.
- If you know a required feature was recently removed, restore it and restart Windows.
- Run DISM and SFC afterward if the error continues.
The exact feature list differs between Windows editions. On client Windows, an error from an old networking utility may reflect an unsupported or incomplete configuration rather than a standalone missing file.
Fix 6: Check the application and its dependencies
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
If only one old application reports the error, determine whether it is actually invoking Windows networking or whether another dependency is failing.
- Note the full error text and the program name.
- Right-click the program shortcut and select Open file location.
- Check whether the program directory contains its own
iprtprio.dll. - Do not replace a program file with a copy from another computer.
- Check the application’s official installer or update mechanism.
- Install the current version from the developer if one exists.
- If the program demonstrably shipped the file, use its Repair option or reinstall it from the official installer.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the evidence-based first fix for this Windows routing DLL. Install a runtime only when the application’s own error or diagnostic information identifies that separate runtime as missing.
If the message appears only in a game, use the launcher’s file verification only when the game is proven to ship iprtprio.dll. There is no verified evidence that this file is ordinary game middleware.
Fix 7: Check architecture and dependent modules
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows may use the 32-bit system environment, while a 64-bit program uses the 64-bit environment. A file can exist and still fail to load if it is the wrong architecture, damaged, blocked, or dependent on another missing module.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use these checks:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Review System type.
- Confirm whether the failing program is 32-bit or 64-bit from its documentation or installation directory.
- Check Event Viewer if the failure is repeatable:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Review events at the time of the failure.
- Look for a named dependency, application crash, or networking service error.
Do not copy the same binary into both System32 and SysWOW64. Let Windows servicing supply the appropriate variants.
Fix 8: Update a network driver only when the evidence points there
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
Driver repair applies when the error is tied to a particular network adapter, VPN client, or routing stack. It does not replace DISM and SFC.

When several adapters or old VPN drivers are installed, hunting through versions manually can be difficult. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies the drivers it finds; driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling a driver will not repair a damaged Windows component store.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or an in-place repair
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent update, driver installation, or system change and a restore point is available.
- Open Start.
- Search for
Create a restore point. - Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review affected programs and complete the wizard.
- Test the system after Windows restarts.
If repair commands repeatedly fail, Windows reports persistent component corruption, or networking remains broken, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Choose the option that preserves personal files and applications where supported, and confirm the edition and language before proceeding.
Back up important files first. A repair installation is different from a clean installation and should be treated as the escalation step after updates, DISM/SFC, security checks, and restore options.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.
There is no evidence that iprtprio.dll is a COM self-registering DLL. Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →regsvr32 iprtprio.dll
It may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. Missing or damaged Windows system DLLs are normally repaired through component servicing, not registration.
Likely causes of the error
The usual causes, in practical order, are:
- Windows component-store or system-file corruption
- An incomplete or failed Windows update
- Antivirus quarantine or a false positive
- Disk corruption or a damaged Windows installation
- Malware or an impostor file in an unexpected directory
- Architecture mismatch or a missing dependency
- A problem in an old routing, VPN, or networking application
Manual deletion is also possible, but replacing the file alone does not address why it disappeared.
FAQ
Is iprtprio.dll legitimate?
Yes. iprtprio.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL described as IP Routing Protocol Priority DLL. Verify the file’s location and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Does it belong to a game or Visual C++?
It is associated with Windows routing and networking components. It is not identified as a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. Reinstall a game only if that game’s official files clearly include this DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
What does “the specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that a dependency required by the named DLL or calling program is missing. The message does not always mean that iprtprio.dll itself is absent.
Should I download iprtprio.dll?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or an official Windows repair source. Random DLL downloads can provide the wrong build or architecture and can introduce malware.
Will SFC always restore the file?
No. SFC can repair protected files when a valid component-store source is available, but persistent corruption, a failed update, disk problems, or a missing dependency may require additional repair.
Should I reinstall a network driver?
Only when the failure is clearly connected to a specific adapter, VPN, or routing stack. Start with Windows servicing instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if the error returns after SFC repairs it?
Review Windows Update history, Defender Protection history, disk health, Event Viewer, and the program that triggers the error. A returning error can indicate recurring corruption, quarantine, a dependency failure, or an application compatibility problem rather than a permanently missing DLL.
