Shifting Earth is a science-fiction graphic novel by Cecil Castellucci, illustrated by Flavia Biondi and Fabiana Mascolo. It follows botanist Dr. Maeve Lindholm after a particle storm strands her on a parallel Earth with two moons and a society that insists everyone must serve a purpose. The title can also refer to Earth-science and documentary material, so the author and format identify the book discussed here.
What is Shifting Earth about?
In the publisher’s synopsis, a particle storm carries Dr. Maeve Lindholm to an idyllic but unfamiliar parallel Earth, where she has no clear way home. There, two moons shape the society, nature has greater standing than science, and people who cannot fulfill a required purpose face severe punishment. Maeve and astronomer Zuzi must confront the darkness beneath this world’s promise as they consider whether to save the worlds they know or choose another path.

The parallel Earth and its rules are fictional worldbuilding, not a scientific account or forecast. The publisher frames the story around climate-ravaged worlds, ecological sustainability, science, survival, choice, and sacrifice.
Who created the graphic novel?
Cecil Castellucci wrote Shifting Earth, with art credited to Flavia Biondi and Fabiana Mascolo. Dark Horse Books published it under the Berger Books imprint. Author Madeline Ashby’s publisher-page endorsement describes the book as taking seriously science fiction’s call to imagine better futures while asking what sacrifices people are willing to make; that is an endorsement, not an independent assessment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why might the title be confusing?
Shifting Earth is not a unique title phrase. It also appears as a segment heading for an Earth-science educational video about tectonic plates, while National Film Board materials describe the climate documentary Metamorphosis as surveying a “shape-shifting” Earth. Those are separate works, not Castellucci’s graphic novel.
For this book, search for “Shifting Earth Cecil Castellucci” or include “graphic novel” and the ISBN 9781506729107. The identified publisher and retailer listings establish the book’s format and premise; they do not establish print quality, accessibility features, or a comparative critical consensus.
