What is Frostrail?
Frostrail is a survival FPS set in a frozen, corrupted wasteland. Players explore, scavenge, craft and fight alone or in co-op, using a steam-powered train as both a mobile refuge and their route through the world. The Steam description calls it “more than a refuge” and “your only way forward.” Steam’s Frostrail page presents the train as the core of the experience, not just transport.
Who is making Frostrail?
FakeFish Oy develops Frostrail. Steam identifies Shiro Unlimited as publisher, while Shiro Games’ announcement frames the project as a publishing partnership with FakeFish. These labels describe the collaboration; they do not make Shiro Games the game’s developer.
How does the train shape survival?
Keep the train running
The train is a moving base that players must fuel and manage. Its power, reinforcement, added carriages and crafting stations all feed into progression. The February 2026 gameplay-trailer announcement from the Frostrail Team described it this way: “Your train is your lifeline. The tracks are your only way forward.” The Steam description likewise says players must operate and upgrade the steam-powered train.

Leave shelter to gather what you need
Players venture away from the train to scavenge, then return to their mobile refuge. Cold, blizzards and the need to ration heat create survival pressure, while revenants and other horrors provide combat threats. The official description and trailer announcement present the game as playable solo or in co-op.
Is Frostrail co-op?
Yes. The official game description says players can play alone or with others in co-op. The Frostrail Team’s February 2026 trailer announcement also describes solo and cooperative play; it does not specify a maximum co-op group size in the cited information.

When does Frostrail come out?
As of October 8, 2026, Steam lists Frostrail for Early Access in Q4 2026, a release window rather than a confirmed day. The official sources reviewed do not state a price, and Steam marks the system requirements as TBA. Check the Steam listing for changes to timing and other details.
What is planned for Early Access?
Steam’s Early Access statement says the team expects the period to last about a year, with its actual length depending on player feedback and development progress. The team plans to add content and systems during that period, including:

In a September 2026 announcement, the Frostrail Team reported that its closed beta had ended with more than 70,000 participants and that the game had reached 500,000 Steam wishlists. The team also said beta participants could invite up to three friends. Those figures are team-reported milestones, not independently verified player counts.

A separate December 2025 development update said a limited playtest found the core combination of train driving, exploration and crafting promising. The team also identified tutorials and onboarding, enemy AI, usability, accessibility and performance as areas needing more work at that time. That feedback describes the December 2025 playtest, not the later closed beta or the current build.
