Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition launched on October 13, 2026, and its first two days turned into a severe PC backlash. The $39.99 package promised a 64-bit upgrade, visual improvements, modern controls, expanded language support, Mod.io integration and more than 50 additional playable minor factions. Instead, early players reported crashes, freezes, poor performance, graphical defects and long-standing gameplay bugs. SEGA and Creative Assembly said on October 15 that the release had fallen below their standards and that they were working with platform holders to remove it temporarily, restore the original game and support refund requests.
What happened to Complete Edition?
SEGA released Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition for PC on October 13, 2026. The Japanese historical grand-strategy game was developed by Creative Assembly with MATABOO as a development partner and published by SEGA. It was announced for Steam, Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG, with one-player and two-to-eight-player multiplayer support.

The advertised US price was $39.99. The official FAQ listed regional prices of £34.99 and €39.99. Complete Edition bundled the base game with its major downloadable content, including Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai.
Within hours, Steam reviews became “Overwhelmingly Negative.” GamesRadar recorded 19% positive reviews from 677 reviews shortly after release, while Windows Central later reported more than 1,850 reviews following the same trajectory. Those percentages are launch snapshots and can change as the review pool grows.

What the edition was supposed to add
The release was marketed as an updated version rather than a simple bundle. SEGA’s pre-launch FAQ listed these changes:
- 64-bit support replacing the original game’s older technical base.
- Updated lighting, shadows and textures.
- User-interface scaling for 1440p and 4K displays.
- Modernized controls.
- Japanese and Chinese voice acting with full text localization.
- More than 50 newly playable minor factions.
- Integrated Mod.io support.
- The original game and DLC for existing owners, with the Blood Pack excluded because of age-rating restrictions.
Existing owners were also told they would receive the original DLC at no additional cost and qualify for a time-limited 75% loyalty discount when upgrading. Those were announced terms in the October 12 FAQ; because storefront listings and entitlements changed after launch, check the account page for the current offer before paying.

Why players say it is crashing and burning
Stability and performance problems
Player reports described game-breaking crashes, freezes, poor frame-rate performance, lighting and HDR failures, graphical clipping and other rendering defects. Some users also described artwork that looked downgraded or lower quality than expected. These reports do not establish that every defect affects every PC configuration, but the volume was large enough to drive the overall Steam rating sharply negative.
Unresolved legacy bugs
PC Gamer’s assessment separated the underlying game from this edition: the original Shogun 2 remains enjoyable, but the remaster did not solve many known problems. Reported examples included unreliable siege pathfinding, enemy-AI errors, passive naval AI, multiplayer desynchronization and agents or generals behaving incorrectly. PC Gamer also found the published fix list limited compared with the game’s long history of documented issues.

Claims about image upscaling
Players and media reports alleged that some artwork used undisclosed AI upscaling. That remains an allegation, not a confirmed technical finding. SEGA has not published a definitive explanation establishing how every disputed asset was produced.

What SEGA and Creative Assembly said
In an October 15 developer update, SEGA and Creative Assembly said: “We’re aware that Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition has fallen short of both your expectations and our own standards.” The companies said they were working with their development partner to identify the causes and deliver improvements.

The same update said they were working with platform holders to remove Complete Edition from sale and reinstate the original game while the investigation continued. They also said they were discussing extensions to refund periods and intended to support players who wanted refunds. This is an operational status that can change quickly, so confirm the current listing and the latest official notice on your store before acting.

If you already own the 2011 game
Keep playing the original if it works for you. The promised 75% loyalty discount and free original DLC entitlement could make a later upgrade inexpensive, but neither benefit is useful if the Complete Edition remains unavailable or unstable. Check your library and account entitlements rather than assuming the pre-launch offer is still active.

If you bought Complete Edition at launch
- Check whether the game is still listed in your storefront library and whether the original version has been restored to your account.
- Read the store’s current refund rules and submit a request promptly; SEGA said it was communicating with platforms about extended windows, but an extension is not guaranteed until the platform confirms it.
- Keep a record of the purchase date, crashes, freezes and other reproducible failures in case support asks for details.
If you do not own either version
Wait for an official status update and a clear statement that the principal crash, performance and compatibility problems have been addressed. The original game is the lower-risk choice only if your storefront still provides it and you accept its older interface and unresolved legacy bugs. Complete Edition’s additional factions, localization, display scaling and Mod.io features are attractive on paper, but the launch build did not provide a reliable basis for recommending an immediate purchase.
What is known about refunds and availability?
There is no single permanent answer because the sale status and refund handling were changing on October 15, 2026. The developer statement said the companies were seeking temporary removal, restoration of the original game and support for affected purchasers. Check your specific store’s current product page, library entry and support form for the applicable refund deadline and whether the original entitlement has appeared.
Bottom line for players
Shogun 2 itself has not suddenly become a bad strategy game; the controversy is about this edition’s launch quality. The advertised technical and content upgrades were substantial, but early evidence showed widespread enough crashes, performance failures and untouched legacy bugs to make Complete Edition a poor day-one recommendation. Existing owners should preserve access to the original and verify any loyalty entitlement, while new buyers should wait until SEGA and Creative Assembly publish a meaningful fix and storefront availability stabilizes.
