There is no official Iron Gate mod-support guarantee. Iron Gate’s own guidance says Valheim has no official mod support, although the studio is happy to see players create mods. Treat every gameplay overhaul as version-sensitive community software, not as a permanent part of the vanilla game.

What an MMORPG conversion needs
Valheim already has exploration, crafting, bosses and a shared world, but it does not natively provide the systems players associate with an MMORPG. A server feels persistent and role-driven when several separate functions work together:
- Persistent progression: XP, levels, attributes and visible enemy scaling give players a reason to keep developing a character.
- Roles: Classes, subclasses, talents, healing, tanking or summoning let different players contribute in distinct ways.
- Activities beyond combat: Quests, friends lists, group XP and skill requirements create goals for a party or guild-like community.
- An economy: Contracts, cargo, reputation and trader progression make travel and trade meaningful.
- Server continuity: A dedicated server, version discipline and backups protect the world while the mod stack evolves.
No single mod in the documented set supplies every layer. The practical approach is to establish one progression foundation, then add roles, social content and economy in stages.
The recommended layered stack
1. Start with Valheim MMORPG Core
Valheim MMORPG Core is a BepInEx plugin that adds MMO-style progression to Valheim. It is the strongest foundation when the main goal is a persistent character-development loop rather than a collection of disconnected features.
Its listed systems include XP from defeating creatures, visible creature levels, biome- and player-based level generation, enemy-stat scaling, Strength, Vitality, Defense and Agility attributes, attribute points, an RPG HUD and server-tunable configuration. Those features affect both the player and the world: players can see progression, while encounters can become more dangerous as the server’s level logic changes.

Install and tune this layer first. Before adding another XP or level system, confirm how both systems store experience, generate levels and alter enemy statistics. Two progression engines can produce conflicting rewards, duplicate HUD elements or incompatible save data.
2. Choose one broader RPG system only if its trade-offs fit
EpicMMOSystem covers a wide MMO surface: shared group XP, custom-mob XP, an MMO-like friends list, an on-screen XP bar, monster levels and quest hooks. Thunderstore labels it for both server and client and currently marks the package deprecated. That deprecation is a material maintenance risk: a setup that works on one Valheim build may require replacement or troubleshooting after an update.
WackyEpicMMOSystem is the more practical candidate when quests and social progression matter as much as combat leveling. Its listed features include adjustable player progression, a dedicated quest button, an MMO-like friends list, group-XP support through the Groups mod and skill combinations that can be used as requirements. The version page lists version 1.9.71 as of October 15, 2026. Verify that version, its dependencies and its compatibility with the current Valheim release before deploying it.

Do not run EpicMMOSystem, WackyEpicMMOSystem and Valheim MMORPG Core together by default. Select one primary progression architecture, test it on a disposable world, and add only systems whose XP, level and save-data behavior is demonstrably compatible.
3. Add WayOfTheGods for classes and combat roles
WayOfTheGods is the clearest class-and-ability layer in this group. Its author describes six classes, 36 subclasses, unified talent trees, active abilities, summons, healing, tanking and shapeshifting. That combination gives a party meaningful specialization instead of merely increasing everyone’s damage numbers.
Multiplayer deployment has a strict requirement: the mod must be installed on the server and on every client, and all players must use matching major and minor versions. A player with a different version can be unable to join or encounter inconsistent abilities and data. Include the exact package version in your server’s installation instructions and keep a known-good copy for rollback.
4. Add ImmersiveTrader as the economy and reputation layer
ImmersiveTrader focuses on progression outside direct combat. Its description names contracts, cargo, reputation, cooldowns and progression based on each player’s personal state, with server validation. Dedicated servers need the mod and its dependencies.
Install this after the progression and class systems are stable. An economy mod introduces persistent player-state data and new ways to reward activity; adding it while the underlying XP framework is still changing increases the number of variables in a failure. Decide whether contracts reward the same currency or items used by your progression system, then test reconnects, deaths and abandoned contracts before opening the server to a community.

Choose a stack by the kind of server you want
A lightweight RPG server
Use Valheim MMORPG Core alone. This gives you a clear XP-and-attributes loop without changing every aspect of the game. It is the best starting point for a small group that wants stronger character progression but still wants quests, trading and party organization to remain mostly player-created.
A class-focused party server
Use Valheim MMORPG Core plus WayOfTheGods. The first mod supplies the persistent progression foundation; the second supplies distinct combat identities. Because WayOfTheGods requires server-and-client installation with matching major and minor versions, distribute a locked mod package before inviting players. Test class abilities in the same biomes and boss encounters where enemy scaling is active.
A quest-and-social server
Use one progression system—preferably Valheim MMORPG Core or a validated WackyEpicMMOSystem setup—then add WackyEpicMMOSystem’s quest and social features if its dependencies are compatible. WackyEpicMMOSystem is particularly suited to a community that wants a dedicated quest button, friends-list functionality, group XP and skill-gated objectives. Avoid layering it over another untested XP framework.
A full MMO-style community world
Build in this order: Valheim MMORPG Core, WayOfTheGods, WackyEpicMMOSystem only if its progression hooks do not overlap destructively, and ImmersiveTrader last. This is the richest combination described by the available features, but also the most demanding to maintain. Keep a staging copy of the world and make each addition a separate test milestone so you can identify which layer caused a failure.

A dedicated server is the practical model for a persistent community world because it can remain available independently of one player’s computer. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide for the Steam version was published April 11, 2024 and documents the supported server setup and relevant console commands. Use that guide for the base server installation rather than treating a mod page as a replacement for the game’s server documentation.

- Create a clean server profile. Keep the vanilla server files separate from the modded profile. Record the Valheim version, operating system, server name, world name and password in an administrator document.
- Install the dedicated server using Iron Gate’s Steam instructions. Confirm that the unmodded server starts, accepts a test connection and saves the world before adding BepInEx or gameplay mods.
- Back up the world and configuration. Make a dated copy before every major gameplay-mod change. Preserve both the world files and the mod configuration files so a rollback restores the same progression rules.
- Install the required mod loader and dependencies. Valheim MMORPG Core is a BepInEx plugin. Follow the current installation instructions for the loader and each package; do not assume that a dependency bundled with one mod satisfies another mod’s requirement.
- Add one progression foundation. Start the server with Valheim MMORPG Core, create a test character and verify XP awards, creature levels, attributes, the RPG HUD and enemy scaling.
- Test persistence. Log out, restart the server and reconnect. Confirm that levels, attributes and configuration remain intact before introducing classes or quests.
- Add optional layers one at a time. Install WayOfTheGods, WackyEpicMMOSystem or ImmersiveTrader separately, restarting and testing after each change. Keep a change log with package versions and dependency versions.
- Distribute a matching client package. WayOfTheGods requires installation on every client with matching major and minor versions. EpicMMOSystem is also labeled server-side and client-side on Thunderstore. Tell players exactly which files and versions to use.
- Open a short closed test. Have several players join different classes, form a group, earn XP, trigger a quest and exercise any trader contracts. Test deaths, reconnects and server restarts before announcing a public launch.
Compatibility rules that prevent most disasters
- Pin versions where possible. A game update can change APIs or data behavior even when the mod files have not changed.
- Read every dependency list. WackyEpicMMOSystem’s group-XP support uses the Groups mod, while dedicated-server deployment of ImmersiveTrader requires its dependencies.
- Do not assume server-only means client-independent. Thunderstore labels EpicMMOSystem as both server-side and client-side, and WayOfTheGods explicitly requires both.
- Keep XP ownership clear. Decide which system awards experience, which system controls levels and which system changes enemy statistics. Disable or omit overlapping features where configuration allows.
- Test saves after removal. Removing a mod that stores player attributes, quests, reputation or class data can leave characters in an unexpected state. Restore a backup rather than experimenting on the live world.
- Maintain a rollback path. Save the previous mod files, configuration and world backup together. A rollback is only useful if all three match.
How the stack changes Valheim’s difficulty curve
Valheim MMORPG Core explicitly includes enemy-stat scaling and level generation influenced by biome and player factors. That can make progression feel more like an MMO, but it also changes the assumptions behind vanilla food, armor, weapons and boss preparation. A server should decide whether stronger enemies are meant to challenge solo players, coordinated groups or both.
WayOfTheGods changes the curve through specialization. Healing, tanking, summons and active abilities can make a coordinated party stronger than an equivalent group using vanilla tools, while a player who chooses a narrow role may be less effective alone. Test classes in ordinary exploration as well as boss fights so that one ability does not trivialize a biome or make a class mandatory.
Quest and economy layers affect difficulty indirectly. If contracts or group rewards accelerate access to gear, players may reach later biomes before the world’s intended preparation curve. If rewards are too restrictive, the systems become decorative. Use a closed test to observe whether the new rewards change when players craft, explore and defeat bosses, then adjust server-tunable settings where the mod provides them.
Troubleshooting common failures
A player cannot join after a class mod is installed
Check that the player has the mod on the client, that the server has the same package, and that the major and minor versions match exactly. WayOfTheGods documents this requirement. Compare dependency versions as well, then restart both the server and the client after correcting the package.
XP appears twice or levels advance unexpectedly
Look for more than one active progression system. Valheim MMORPG Core, EpicMMOSystem and WackyEpicMMOSystem all expose overlapping XP or level concepts. Disable the newest addition, restore the last known-good backup if player data changed, and reintroduce only one XP authority at a time.

Group XP or quests do not appear
For WackyEpicMMOSystem, verify that the required Groups mod is installed and that the version is compatible. Confirm that every client has the required package when the feature is client-visible, then test with a newly created group rather than relying on an old session.
Trader contracts or reputation reset
Check ImmersiveTrader’s dependencies and server validation settings first. Restore the pre-change backup if personal player state was lost, and test a single contract through completion, cooldown and reconnect before allowing further progression.
The server works until Valheim updates
Do not immediately update the live profile. Copy the world, record the old game and mod versions, and test the new Valheim build in the staging profile. EpicMMOSystem’s deprecated status makes this especially important; a replacement or rollback may be safer than forcing an unsupported combination.
What to tell players before launch
- The server is modded and is not covered by official Iron Gate mod support.
- Which progression system controls XP and levels.
- Whether client installation is required and where to obtain the exact package.
- The required major and minor versions for WayOfTheGods, if used.
- Which classes and subclasses are available and whether class choice is permanent.
- How group XP, quests, contracts and reputation are expected to work.
- When maintenance, backups and version changes will occur.
Recommended final configuration
For most communities, begin with Valheim MMORPG Core and prove that its XP, attributes, HUD and enemy scaling remain stable across restarts. Add WayOfTheGods when the community genuinely wants defined combat roles and can enforce synchronized client versions. Add WackyEpicMMOSystem when quests, friends-list features, group XP and skill requirements are more important than keeping the system minimal, but do not stack its progression blindly on another XP engine. Add ImmersiveTrader only after player progression is reliable, then test contracts, cargo, cooldowns and reputation persistence.
This staged approach produces the MMORPG feeling through complementary systems while keeping each failure diagnosable. It also respects the central limitation of modded Valheim: compatibility is determined by the current game build, each package’s dependencies and the way those packages store data, not by a universal guarantee from Iron Gate.
