Shogun Showdown is a strong fit if you like turn-based tactics that reward planning, positioning, and learning enemy patterns. Critics have praised its strategic depth and replayable runs, while noting that the controls take adjustment and preparing attacks can slow the pace. It is less an action game than a compact tactical puzzle.
What is Shogun Showdown?
Shogun Showdown is a single-player, turn-based tactical roguelike with deck-building elements. Its combat centers on positioning, facing, attack timing, and combining attack tiles; runs also let you unlock characters, attacks, and skills. Rather than drawing a conventional hand of cards and reacting in real time, you plan moves and attack sequences around what enemies are expected to do. Steam’s listing describes upgrading attack tiles and preparing combinations before facing the Shogun, while Nintendo’s listing highlights unlocks across repeated runs.
The game released on September 5, 2024. Steam lists Roboatino as developer and Goblinz Publishing and Gamirror Games as publishers; Nintendo’s US Switch listing identifies Goblinz Studio as publisher.

PC Gamer’s Robin Valentine called it “This wonderfully clever strategy roguelike demands your best, and it deserves to get it.” Nintendo Life’s PJ O’Reilly described it as “an instant indie essential.” The praise points to the same core appeal: understanding a small set of rules, then finding better ways to use positioning and attack combinations.
How does the combat play?
Think of each encounter as a sequence to solve. You move into position, face the right direction, prepare an attack, and release it when the timing and enemy behavior make sense. A strong turn can depend as much on where you stand and which way you face as on which attack tile you use.

- Authentic Japanese Theme – Immerse yourself in feudal Japan with beautifully illustrated Sumi-E style art cards that bring samurai battles to life.
- Quick & Easy to Learn</b< – Play in minutes! Rules are simple enough for beginners, yet offer layered strategy for repeat play.
- Family-Friendly Strategy – Perfect balance of fun and challenge makes it ideal for game night with kids, teens, and adults.
- Compact & Travel Ready – Small box size makes it easy to carry anywhere – great for vacations, coffee shops, or conventions.
- Replayable Fun – With 45 unique cards and endless combinations, no two showdowns are ever the same.
That deliberate rhythm distinguishes the game from real-time action: it asks for prediction and sequencing rather than fast reactions. It also differs from a conventional random-draw deckbuilder, since the reviewed descriptions emphasize prepared attacks and spatial tactics. The same structure that creates satisfying planning can feel slow if you want combat to flow continuously; a Metacritic-displayed GameCritics summary specifically criticizes the pace created by preparing attacks and facing.
What are the main drawbacks?
- Controls need adjustment. Nintendo Life notes that the controls may take a moment to get used to, which matters especially if you expect immediately familiar action-game inputs.
- Combat is intentionally measured. Facing and attack preparation add tactical choices but can interrupt momentum for players who prefer rapid, continuous action.
- Narrative is not the main draw. A Softpedia summary displayed by Metacritic criticizes the lack of a substantial narrative and says skill unlocks can feel slow. These are that review’s criticisms, not a universal consensus.
Who is Shogun Showdown for?
It is most likely to appeal to players who enjoy turn-based tactics, thinking several actions ahead, repeatable runs, and experimenting with combinations. Its compact, mechanically focused approach is a better match for players interested in mastering combat systems than for someone primarily seeking a substantial story.

Before buying, watch gameplay if you are unsure about the attack-preparation rhythm or the control scheme. When comparing it with another roguelike, look at whether combat is turn-based or real-time, how much facing and positioning matter, how progression works between runs, and how much narrative the game emphasizes.
