A shooting contest is an organized event in which competitors follow a defined course of fire or target sequence and are ranked under that event’s scoring rules. There is no single format: the discipline and governing organization set the targets, procedures, equipment rules, scoring and advancement. For a first match, identify the discipline, read the host’s current rules and ask what instruction and equipment the venue provides.
What happens in a shooting contest?
Each match sets out what competitors will do: which targets they engage, in what sequence or from which positions, and under what timing and equipment rules. That prescribed set of stages is often called a course of fire. Its details are specific to the event; a rule from one discipline or organization should not be assumed to apply to another.

A match may include qualification rounds followed by a final, but the number of stages, who advances and whether earlier scores carry forward depend on the event’s current rules. Read the rules for the named contest rather than relying on a generic description of competition.
What are the main types of shooting contests?
As a broad orientation, international competition governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) includes rifle, pistol and shotgun, as well as running target and target sprint. The Olympic program is a subset of shooting disciplines and can change over time. Other organizations govern their own events and publish separate rules.

How does scoring work?
Scoring follows the discipline’s rules, so “shooting is scored out of” one fixed number is not a reliable general explanation. Precision rifle and pistol events use event-specific target and scoring provisions. Tie-breaks, decimal scoring, final-round elimination and qualification advancement can also differ.

Shotgun example: ISSF clay-target events
In the ISSF shotgun overview, competitors shoot in squads from designated stations and call for targets. Officials judge hits under the applicable event rules; ISSF describes a hit as requiring at least a piece of the target to be seen falling by referees. The exact course, target presentation and procedures depend on the event and its current rules. ISSF championship and event overview

A finalist may start with a clean score rather than carrying qualification results forward, but that is not universal. Why check the rule book’s date?
Competition formats can change. On December 10, 2025, ISSF announced changes to its 2026 rule book, effective January 1, 2026. The announced changes included new Olympic-event final formats, changes to team finals, revised equipment provisions, live aiming for rifle and pistol, and video assistant referee use for shotgun. Consult the ISSF rules index for the applicable edition and amendments; do not assume an older event description is still current.
ISSF also announced confirmed LA28 final formats following tests at ISSF competitions: all four qualified mixed teams compete simultaneously from the start, and men’s and women’s trap and skeet finals feature eight athletes rather than six. These are LA28-specific format details, not a template for every contest. Check the announcement and the event’s current rules before relying on them: ISSF announcement on LA28 final formats.

What should a beginner do before attending?
- Find the event and its governing body. Ask the club, range or organizer which discipline and match format it offers.
- Read the current rules and event instructions. Check the course, permitted equipment, match stages, scoring and any arrival requirements.
- Ask what the venue provides. Confirm whether equipment is supplied, what is permitted, and what safety briefing or instruction is required.
- Follow the host’s safety requirements. Ask specifically about eye and hearing protection and any venue rules. Requirements are not established here as universal across every discipline or venue.
ISSF’s equipment checks and shotgun or cartridge specifications apply to the events covered by its rules; they should not be generalized to other disciplines or local matches. For U.S. competition, the NRA Competitive Shooting Division rule-book resource is a separate source for its events. Always use the organizer’s current instructions for the match you plan to attend.
