Short Games vs. 100-Hour RPGs: Which Is Better for Your Free Time?

A 100-hour RPG is not automatically better value than a short game. Match the format to your dependable weekly hours, session length, appetite for optional content and desire for closure or a long-term world.

Neither is universally better. A short game usually fits fragmented schedules and delivers a clear ending before your attention moves elsewhere. A 100-hour RPG suits players who want one persistent world, a long-term project and many sessions of gradual progress. The better choice is the one whose demands match your available hours, preferred session length and appetite for optional content.

Think in calendar time, not the number printed beside a completion estimate. A “100-hour” RPG can occupy several weeks for someone who plays every evening, or several months for someone with only a few sessions each week. A short game can still feel substantial if every hour is focused, while a long game can feel wasteful when its extra activities become obligations.

What “game length” actually measures

Completion-time labels are not standardized promises. The DiGRA 2025 paper describes a lack of an official method for communicating video-game play length, and notes that services such as HowLongToBeat aggregate player estimates across different play styles. A figure therefore describes a typical pattern of play reported by a particular community, not a timer that every player will match.

Main story, extras and completionist time

Most estimates fall into three useful categories:

  • Main story: the shortest route through required objectives, with little optional exploration.
  • Main story plus extras: the campaign together with side quests, collectibles or activities that a typical player may choose to sample.
  • Completionist: an attempt to finish nearly every objective, unlock, collectible and optional challenge.

Compare the same category when you compare games. A 20-hour main-story estimate is not meaningfully shorter than a 100-hour completionist estimate; those figures answer different questions. Replayable, branching and regularly updated games are particularly difficult to reduce to one number. The Northwestern University-hosted 2024 working-paper draft says HowLongToBeat data can be selected and sparse, and that “game length” is hard to define for such titles.

Why a 100-hour estimate expands or contracts

Your pace changes the result through difficulty, exploration, retries, dialogue speed, build choices, travel and the amount of side content you accept. Updates can also add missions or alter balance after an estimate was submitted. Treat a current title-level estimate as a planning range, identify its play-style category and note when it was checked; do not treat it as a guarantee.

How 100 hours translates into real calendar time

The commitment becomes clearer when you divide the estimate by the hours you can genuinely play. The following examples are arithmetic planning scenarios, not universal completion times:

Available play time Approximate calendar time for 100 hours What that feels like
2 hours per week 50 weeks A year-long background project; memory of systems and story may fade between sessions.
5 hours per week 20 weeks About five months, assuming every planned session happens.
8 hours per week 12.5 weeks Roughly three months, with little room for missed weekends.
12 hours per week 8.3 weeks About two months at a demanding but sustainable pace.
20 hours per week 5 weeks A concentrated project that can dominate a holiday or a particularly free month.

Subtract interruptions before planning. If you expect 8 hours of gaming time but regularly lose a quarter of it to travel, family commitments or other games, plan around 6 hours. At that rate, 100 hours takes about 16.7 weeks. A useful buffer prevents a missed week from turning the game into a source of guilt.

Session length matters as much as weekly hours

A game built around frequent checkpoints and discrete chapters can work in 30-minute windows. A long RPG may ask you to remember a quest chain, navigate a large area and complete several battles before reaching a satisfying stopping point. If your available sessions are short, the friction of resuming a complex game can matter more than its total estimate.

Conversely, a player with two uninterrupted weekend sessions may prefer a large world even with modest weekly hours. Ask not only “How many hours do I have?” but also “How many consecutive minutes do I usually have at one time?”

What players report about long games

Push Square’s 2025 self-selected poll of 2,202 respondents asked how long a big RPG takes them. Fifty-nine percent said months and 32% said several weeks. These are opt-in responses from that publication’s audience, not a representative estimate for all players, but they illustrate how a nominally 100-hour game commonly becomes a multi-month commitment.

A second Push Square poll from 2025, with 1,971 votes, asked whether players try to do everything in a big RPG. Fifty-three percent said they do most things as long as they are enjoying it. That wording is important: many players use enjoyment, not a checklist, as the stopping rule. Optional content is valuable while it remains play; it becomes a cost when it feels like unpaid completion work.

How players describe an ideal length

Push Square’s 2022 self-selected poll of 5,174 respondents found no single majority preference. Thirty percent chose 20–30 hours, 27% chose 10–20 hours and 23% chose 40 hours or more. The choices reflect that audience’s preferences at that time, not a market-wide standard. They do show why “the ideal game length” is a personal decision rather than a specification that developers can optimize for everyone.

Use those ranges as prompts, not targets. A 10-hour game can be too long if its mechanics repeat, while a 40-hour game can be too short if its world and systems are the reason you bought it. The experience delivered per session matters more than the raw total.

Short games: where they fit best

Advantages

  • Predictable commitment: A bounded main path is easier to fit between work, school, family and other hobbies.
  • Stronger momentum: Focused mechanics and a compact story reduce the chance that you forget the controls or plot between sessions.
  • More variety: Finishing one game creates room to try a different genre, creator or play style.
  • Clear closure: A definite ending can be satisfying when you want a complete experience rather than a long-term project.

Trade-offs

  • A short campaign may leave less room for character development, experimentation or a large simulated world.
  • If you value dozens of hours with one combat or progression system, a compact game may end just as it becomes familiar.
  • A low hour count does not guarantee quality; padding can make a short game feel long, and concentrated design can make every hour demanding.

100-hour RPGs: where they fit best

Advantages

  • Continuity: A persistent cast, map and progression system can reward returning to the same world over many weeks.
  • Room to experiment: Multiple builds, quests and approaches let you pursue different goals without exhausting the main path immediately.
  • Long-form immersion: Players who enjoy living with a setting and watching systems unfold may find the length itself meaningful.
  • Flexible stopping points: Side quests and regional objectives can provide smaller milestones inside a large campaign.

Trade-offs

  • High opportunity cost: The game can occupy the time in which you might have completed several shorter experiences.
  • Memory load: Long gaps between sessions make controls, character relationships and unfinished objectives harder to recall.
  • Pacing risk: Repeated encounters, travel or collectibles may feel like padding when your interest has shifted.
  • Completion pressure: A large checklist can turn optional content into an obligation, especially for players who dislike leaving markers unfinished.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a familiar example of a long RPG often described as taking upwards of 70, 80 or 90 hours depending on pace. Those figures are illustrations of how one title’s duration varies, not a guaranteed runtime or a promise that every player will enjoy all of that content.

A decision framework for your own schedule

Work through these questions before choosing your next game. They turn an abstract hour count into a practical fit test.

1. Count dependable hours, not aspirational hours

Look at the last two or three weeks. How many hours did you actually play, after interruptions? Use the lower end of that range. If you usually manage 4–6 hours, plan with 4. A game that requires your best week every week is a poor match for ordinary free time.

2. Identify your normal session

Write down your typical uninterrupted block: 30 minutes, 60–90 minutes, or a multi-hour evening. Favor games whose saving, checkpoint and mission structure supports that block. If a title does not clearly allow short sessions, assume that restarting it will cost time and attention.

3. Decide whether you want closure or residence

Choose a short game when your priority is reaching a deliberate ending. Choose a long RPG when the appeal is inhabiting one world, developing a character and returning to an ongoing set of goals. Neither preference is a virtue; they solve different leisure problems.

4. Set an optional-content rule in advance

For a long RPG, decide whether you will follow the main path only, sample side quests while they remain enjoyable, or pursue near-completion. Put that rule in writing. “I stop when optional tasks feel repetitive” protects your free time better than an all-or-nothing completion promise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare the experience, not hours per currency unit

The hours-for-dollars calculation is easy, but it can reward repetition and punish focused design. Push Square’s 2022 poll presented “quality over quantity” as an alternative way to think about a purchase. Ask which experience you value: a concentrated campaign, a world you can revisit, unusual mechanics, a story with a firm ending or the freedom to wander for months.

6. Check the estimate’s category and date

Before buying, record whether the listed time is main story, extras or completionist, and when the estimate was collected. If you plan only the campaign, ignore a completionist number. If you want every quest, a main-story number understates your likely commitment.

A quick comparison

Question Short game 100-hour RPG
Best for fragmented free time? Usually; compact chapters and a nearer ending are easier to schedule. Possible, but continuity and memory demands are higher.
Best for long uninterrupted sessions? Works well, though you may finish quickly. Usually; large systems and exploration have room to unfold.
Sense of closure Arrives sooner and is easier to plan. Delayed; interim milestones must provide satisfaction.
Variety across your backlog Leaves more calendar space for different games. Consumes more of your gaming time in one world.
Optional content Often limited enough to evaluate quickly. Can be a major part of the experience or a source of obligation.
Risk if your interest changes Lower sunk-time cost. Higher; abandoning it may mean leaving dozens of hours unfinished.

Why length does not predict satisfaction

Bailey’s dissertation reported no significant difference in user ratings in its sample between games with one-to-five-hour main paths and games with main paths longer than five hours. This observational result does not prove that duration never affects enjoyment; it means that, in that sample, length alone did not separate ratings. Story, mechanics, pacing, accessibility, novelty and personal taste can all matter more than the total.

The evidence also cannot establish that short games or long RPGs cause more satisfaction. The available polls are self-selected, and the academic findings are bounded by their samples and methods. Use them to understand the range of preferences, not to outsource your decision to an average.

Common mistakes when choosing by runtime

Using a completionist number for a main-story plan

This inflates the commitment before you start. Match the estimate to your intended play style and leave optional content outside the initial promise you make to yourself.

Assuming “100 hours” means 100 hours of equally strong content

Large games often mix critical missions with optional activities of varying quality. Decide whether you would still want the game if you stopped after the main path or after a representative sample of side content.

Ignoring the cost of re-entry

When sessions are separated by a week, refreshing controls, inventory, objectives and story can consume part of your next session. A short game with frequent, understandable milestones may provide more usable playtime for the same weekly schedule.

Turning leisure into a quota

Tracking every remaining objective can make a game feel like work. Set a stopping rule based on enjoyment, as the majority response in Push Square’s 2025 optional-content poll suggests, rather than treating the estimate as a debt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying for theoretical value

A long game is not automatically better value because it offers more hours. If you abandon it after ten repetitive hours, its theoretical length has no practical value. A shorter game you finish and remember may be the better use of the same budget and time.

A practical selection checklist

  • How many dependable hours can I play each week?
  • What is my usual uninterrupted session length?
  • Do I want a complete ending soon, or a world to inhabit for months?
  • Which estimate matches my plan: main story, extras or completionist?
  • Will I enjoy optional activities, or feel compelled to clear them?
  • Am I choosing this game for its experience or merely for hours per currency unit?
  • What will I play if this game loses my interest halfway through?

If your answers point in different directions, choose the lower-commitment option first. Finishing a short game gives you information about your current appetite; starting a 100-hour RPG does not require a promise to finish it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 100-hour RPG too long if I only play a few hours each week?

Not automatically. At 5 hours per week, a 100-hour estimate is roughly 20 weeks before interruptions. Choose it only if you are comfortable making one world a multi-month project and can resume it without losing interest.

Should I compare main-story times or completionist times?

Compare the category that matches your intended play. Use a main-story estimate for a focused campaign, extras for sampling side content and completionist time only if you genuinely plan to pursue nearly everything.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Do longer games receive better player ratings?

The available evidence does not establish that. Bailey’s dissertation found no significant rating difference between its short and long main-path samples, while the polls show varied personal preferences.

How can I avoid feeling guilty about abandoning a long game?

Set a stopping rule before you begin: finish the main story, stop when optional activities become repetitive or play until another release interests you. A completion estimate is information, not an obligation.
