Universes Beyond is Magic: The Gathering’s line of officially licensed crossover products. It brings characters, settings, and visual themes from outside Magic’s original worlds onto Magic cards, while the cards continue to use Magic’s rules. A crossover’s franchise explains who and what you see; Magic determines how the cards play.
The important distinctions are the product, the format legality of the specific card, and digital availability. A 2024 policy changed how new booster sets released from 2025 onward are intended to enter Constructed formats, but it did not rewrite older releases or make every supplemental product legal everywhere.

What is Universes Beyond in MTG?
Universes Beyond is Wizards of the Coast’s label for Magic products based on licensed settings outside Magic’s established Multiverse. Instead of visiting a new in-world plane, a set can take you into a different fictional universe and represent its heroes, villains, locations, creatures, and stories as Magic cards.

The cards still have normal Magic characteristics: mana costs, colors, card types, abilities, power and toughness, and the same rules used by other Magic sets. A character from another franchise may be represented as a legendary creature, for example, but it remains a legendary creature for purposes of deck construction and gameplay. A famous location can become a land, and a signature weapon can become an Equipment card.

Wizards treats these releases as Magic sets: themed cards released together so that they can be opened, collected, drafted where supported, and played under Magic’s rules. The outside property supplies the identity and presentation; Magic supplies the card-game system.
Why the label matters
“Universes Beyond” tells you that the setting is licensed rather than one of Magic’s original worlds. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a product is a booster set, a Commander deck, a digital release, or legal in a particular format. Those are separate questions that must be answered for the specific release and card.
How do crossover sets work?
The franchise provides the theme, not a separate rule system
A crossover set may rename familiar concepts through its own fiction and art, but players use the same turn structure, phases, zones, timing rules, and deck-building rules as in any other Magic game. If a card says it creates a token or triggers when a creature enters the battlefield, those abilities function under the regular Comprehensive Rules.

The 2025-and-later booster-set policy
In an October 25, 2024 announcement, Wizards said that new Universes Beyond booster sets releasing in 2025 and later would be designed for all major Constructed formats, like in-world Magic booster sets. The change moves away from making each new crossover a direct-to-Modern release and gives newer sets a route into smaller formats as well as larger nonrotating formats.

Wizards also described a more typical booster-set lifecycle: substantial Limited play at release and contributions to Constructed formats in proportions appropriate to each format’s size. Aaron Forsythe, vice president of Magic R&D, wrote that the approach would provide “a lot of Limited play at release and contributions to each Constructed format in ratios appropriate to the size of the format, thus reducing the churn of the larger nonrotating formats.”
This is a forward-looking policy. It applies to sets released in 2025 and later and does not retroactively alter the legality of older Universes Beyond releases.
Are Universes Beyond cards legal in Standard, Modern, and Commander?
There is no single legality answer for every Universes Beyond card. Start with the release date, then identify whether the card is from the main booster set, a Commander deck, Jumpstart content, a Special Guests slot, or another supplemental product. Finally, check the current rules and banned-and-restricted announcements for the format you want to play.
| Content type | What the policy says | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Main booster sets released in 2025 or later | Designed for all major Constructed formats, including the normal format lifecycle for newer sets. | The exact card’s current status, rotation rules where relevant, and any bans or restrictions. |
| Older Universes Beyond booster sets | The 2024 policy does not change their existing legality. | The legality originally assigned to that release and any later bans or restrictions. |
| Commander decks and other supplemental products | May have different legality from the main booster set. New content can be Eternal legal, while a reprint follows the legality of that card elsewhere. | The product and individual card, not just the crossover name. |
| Jumpstart content and Special Guests | Can follow separate legality treatment from the main set. | The announcement and format rules for that specific card or slot. |
What “Eternal legal” means here
When Wizards describes new supplemental content as potentially Eternal legal, it means it can be legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, subject to the rules for those formats. That wording does not mean every card from every Universes Beyond product is automatically legal in every format. A reprinted card may instead be legal wherever that card is already permitted.
Standard, Modern, and Commander are different checks
For Standard, ask whether the card belongs to a set included in the current Standard card pool and whether it has rotated. For Modern, check the specific set’s assigned legality and the current Modern banned list; the newer policy is not a promise that every older crossover joins Modern. For Commander, the card must satisfy Commander’s color-identity and deck-construction rules in addition to any product-specific legality and the current Commander banned list.

Because format lists change, a legality answer should always be treated as time-sensitive. A card that is legal today can later be banned, restricted, or affected by a format-rule change.

Tabletop release and digital release are separate availability questions. Wizards does not automatically put every crossover on Magic: The Gathering Arena or Magic: The Gathering Online.
What is Through the Omenpaths?
In April 2025, Wizards introduced Through the Omenpaths as a digital Universes Within approach for selected Universes Beyond sets that would otherwise not arrive on its digital Magic platforms. These digital cards are mechanically identical to their tabletop counterparts, but they use different names, art, and creative treatments.
The approach applies only to selected full sets that are legal in all formats, not to every Universes Beyond release. A digital version can therefore preserve the gameplay of a tabletop crossover without reproducing its licensed presentation.
The dated examples Wizards gave
In that announcement, Wizards said FINAL FANTASY and Avatar: The Last Airbender were coming to Arena and Magic Online, while Marvel’s Spider-Man would not. Those were examples stated at the time, not a permanent or complete platform list. For any later crossover, look for that set’s own Arena or Online announcement rather than inferring availability from another release.

The right product depends on what you want to do. There is no universally best Universes Beyond product, and a named crossover may not offer every product type.
| Your goal | Most relevant product | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Draft or open packs for fun | Play Booster | Whether that crossover has Play Boosters and its set-specific contents. |
| Premium treatments and collectible versions | Collector Booster | Which special treatments are actually included in that release. |
| Multiplayer Commander games | Release-specific Commander deck | Whether the crossover offers Commander decks and how their cards are treated for legality. |
| Learning Magic | Starter Kit | Whether the set has a Starter Kit and whether its teaching materials suit your group. |
Play Boosters
Wizards’ general product guide positions Play Boosters for drafting or opening for fun. The guide says each pack includes at least one rare-or-higher card and at least one foil. These are general product specifications and can change; the individual set’s product information controls if it differs.
Collector Boosters
Collector Boosters are aimed at players and collectors who specifically want premium treatments. They are a poor fit if your only objective is to assemble an inexpensive playable deck, because the extra value is concentrated in presentation and special versions rather than a different rules engine.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Commander decks
A Commander deck is the natural entry point for multiplayer Commander when a release offers one. Do not assume its cards share the main booster set’s legality. Wizards specifically warns that Commander products can receive different treatment, so check the individual deck and card.
Starter Kits
Starter Kits are designed for learning. They make sense when the recipient needs a guided introduction rather than a randomized booster-opening experience, but availability is set-specific.
How to evaluate a crossover before buying or building a deck
- Identify the exact release. Record the set name, product type, and release date. “Universes Beyond” is a line, not one legality category.
- Define your play goal. Choose learning, Limited, casual pack opening, Commander, competitive Constructed, or collecting premium treatments.
- Confirm the product exists. Check whether that crossover actually offers Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander decks, Starter Kits, or another product you want.
- Check format legality for the card. Distinguish main-set cards from Commander, Jumpstart, Special Guests, and reprints. Then consult the current format rules and banned-and-restricted announcements.
- Separate tabletop from digital. Look for a platform-specific announcement for Arena or Magic Online. Do not assume a physical set has a digital counterpart.
- Check current availability and timing. Release dates and configurations are volatile, especially for future products. Recheck the official product page close to purchase or event registration.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “Every crossover card is legal everywhere.” Main booster sets released from 2025 onward were designed for all major Constructed formats, but supplemental products and individual cards can differ.
- “The new policy made older sets legal in more formats.” It did not. Existing releases retain their prior legality.
- “If it is on paper, it must be on Arena.” Digital distribution is selective. Through the Omenpaths covers only selected full sets.
- “A Commander deck has the same legality as the boosters.” Commander and other supplemental contents can use different legality rules.
- “The release calendar is permanent.” Dates and product lineups can move. Use the current official listing before making plans.
- “A premium product is automatically better.” Collector Boosters serve collectors; Play Boosters serve drafting and casual opening; Starter Kits serve learners. Match the product to the activity.
Why Universes Beyond matters to Magic players
Crossover sets let players enter Magic through a familiar fictional world while still using the same game system as every other Magic set. The newer booster-set policy also gives these releases a more predictable role in Limited and Constructed play instead of treating each one as an isolated specialty product.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor players, that creates both opportunity and responsibility: a crossover can be a normal part of a draft environment or Constructed collection, but only when the specific set and card meet the format’s rules. The most reliable habit is to separate theme, product, legality, and platform availability rather than treating the Universes Beyond label as an answer to all four.
