Shotgun Cop Man is a single-player precision platformer where firing your weapons doubles as a way to move. That recoil-based idea shapes both combat and traversal, and it is the game’s clearest reason to try it. Steam’s player reviews are strongly positive, while the main buying difference is practical: PC includes a level editor and Steam Workshop support; Switch offers handheld, tabletop, and TV play.

What is Shotgun Cop Man?

Developed by DeadToast Entertainment and published by Devolver Digital, Shotgun Cop Man launched on Steam and Nintendo Switch on May 1, 2025. It is a single-player platformer set in Hell. Its defining mechanic is that weapons do more than attack: firing propels the character, letting players use recoil to cross gaps and navigate levels. Steam’s listing and Nintendo’s listing describe that core loop.

That means aiming and movement are linked. A shot in the wrong direction can disrupt a jump or send the character away from a useful route, as well as miss an enemy. The mechanic asks players to think about where a weapon will send them, not just what it will hit. This is an explanation of the listed mechanics, not a claim based on hands-on testing.

Critic reception

Nintendo Life gave the game 9/10 and wrote that it “can easily stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Super Meat Boy and Celeste in terms of raw, precise gameplay.” Read the Nintendo Life review for its full assessment. Steam also reproduces CG Magazine’s 9/10 description, “Shotgun Cop Man is an absolute delight,” and IGN’s 8/10 line, “Shotgun Cop Man bets big on its platforming acumen, and it pays off.” Those excerpts are attributed on Steam’s listing.

For Switch, eShopperReviews awarded an A- and highlighted the combination of recoil-based combat and traversal as the game’s defining idea. Its review also notes that Switch does not include the PC level creator. Those are that publication’s assessments; read its Switch review for more detail.

What is the campaign like?

Nintendo describes a campaign of more than 150 levels, boss battles, and three challenge goals: No Damage, Speedrun, and Kill All. Those objectives give players reasons to revisit levels with different priorities, but the official listing does not establish a specific completion time or difficulty rating. The level count and challenge descriptions are on Nintendo’s game page.

Should you get it on PC or Switch?

The strongest evidence-based reason to choose PC is access to player-made levels through the editor and Workshop. Choose Switch if handheld, tabletop, or TV play better suits your setup. The cited sources do not indicate that the campaign itself differs between platforms.

What to know about the Switch listing

Nintendo UK lists English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, and Chinese language support, a 442 MB download size, and demo availability. These are details from the UK store listing, so check your own eShop region for local availability and specifications. Nintendo also lists the Pro Controller as compatible, but it is optional because the game supports handheld mode. See the Nintendo listing.

Who is Shotgun Cop Man for?

The recoil mechanic makes the most sense for players who enjoy precision platforming and are interested in a control scheme where aiming also affects movement. The critic comparisons and positive Steam snapshot suggest a favorable reception, but reviews cannot establish whether the challenge or feel will suit every player. PC is the more complete fit for anyone who values making or playing community levels; Switch is the more flexible fit for playing across handheld, tabletop, and TV modes.
