In the United States, Call of Duty games rated Mature 17+ are intended for ages 17 and up, so a 14-year-old is below the ESRB’s suggested age range. That rating is guidance, not a universal legal rule. Check the specific game’s rating and content summary, then decide with your teenager based on its content, online features, and your family’s rules.
What does the Call of Duty rating mean?
The ESRB defines its Mature 17+ category as “Content is generally suitable for ages 17 and up.” It may cover intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, or strong language. The rating is a recommendation for parents, not a finding that every person under 17 will respond the same way. ESRB Ratings Guide

A current Xbox store listing for Call of Duty displays an M rating and names blood and gore, use of drugs, strong language, and intense violence. It also flags user interaction and in-game purchases. That listing is useful context, but the franchise includes multiple releases; do not assume one game’s summary describes every other title. Xbox Call of Duty listing
Why check the exact game?
Ratings and content summaries belong to specific releases. For example, the ESRB summary for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 describes realistic armed combat, frequent blood effects, drug references, and strong language. It is evidence about that installment, not a complete description of newer or different Call of Duty games. ESRB rating summary for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Before deciding, search the exact title in the rating system used where you live. Read the content descriptors and consider the specific mode your child wants to play. For an online mode, ask about voice or text chat, interactions with other players, and whether purchases are enabled; a game’s rating alone does not answer every household concern.
Does Activision’s age language mean a 14-year-old can play?
No. Activision’s Terms of Use, dated September 5, 2025, say its products are generally available to people aged 13 or older, subject to applicable product ratings and restrictions. They also say users aged 13 but under 18 and a parent or guardian must review the agreement together. This is general access and account language; it does not replace an individual game’s rating or recommend that a 14-year-old play an M-rated title. Activision Terms of Use

- Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
- This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
- The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.

- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
How can a parent make the decision?
- Identify the release and platform. Confirm the full game title and the device it will be played on.
- Check the local rating and summary. In the U.S., look up the exact title in the ESRB database and read its descriptors rather than relying on the franchise name alone.
- Talk through online play. Agree on whether multiplayer is allowed, who the teenager may communicate with, and what to do if an interaction feels uncomfortable.
- Set purchase rules. Decide whether in-game spending is allowed and whether purchases require permission.
- Use device controls if you allow play. ESRB notes that parental controls can limit play time, block games by ESRB rating, and manage in-game spending. Controls help enforce household rules; they do not alter a game’s rating or content. ESRB Video Game Ratings
Ratings and availability can differ by country. The Australian eSafety Commissioner describes Call of Duty as a franchise of multiplayer first-person shooter games and advises checking age ratings and requirements. Its guidance also notes that in-game purchases may unlock additional features. Families outside the U.S. should use the rating information applicable in their region. For a U.S. family following ESRB guidance, the default answer for a Call of Duty game rated M 17+ is no: 14 is below the category’s suggested age. A parent may weigh the specific title, the teenager’s maturity, online features, and family boundaries, but should make that choice with the rating and content summary in view—not infer approval from an account age threshold.
