Consider the questionable player when his role and availability look sufficiently secure for your situation and his upside outweighs the backup’s likely production. “Questionable” is uncertainty, not confirmation that he will play, so the right choice depends on the players, matchup, scoring, roster, and platform deadline.
What does “questionable” mean for a quarterback?
The NFL defines Questionable as uncertainty about whether a player will participate in the game. Doubtful means the player is unlikely to participate; Out means he will not participate. The designation alone does not predict fantasy points or guarantee that the quarterback will be active. See the NFL’s injury-report policy definitions.
Separate two questions: will he play, and if he does, is his expected role valuable enough to start? A quarterback can be available but still bring uncertainty about workload or effectiveness. A backup being healthy answers only the availability question; it does not establish that he is the better fantasy option.
How to compare the two quarterbacks
1. Check the questionable quarterback’s latest status and role
Use the latest official team or league availability information you can access before the deadline. Look for meaningful updates to his status and any indication that his expected role may be limited. Do not treat the Questionable label by itself as a forecast of whether he will suit up.

2. Establish what the healthy backup is likely to do
Assess whether the backup is expected to start and what his likely role and opportunity are. “Healthy” does not mean he has a secure workload, a high floor, or a favorable fantasy outlook. If his role is uncertain too, compare the actual risks on both sides rather than assuming he is the safe choice.
3. Weigh ceiling against the cost of a zero
Compare the questionable quarterback’s potential production and risk of being inactive or limited with the backup’s expected role and likely floor. If the questionable player’s absence would leave you with no eligible replacement after your lineup locks, the risk of a zero matters more. If you can tolerate a volatile outcome, the upside may matter more. There is no universal formula that resolves this trade-off for every roster or scoring format.

4. Use matchup as a tiebreaker
When expected roles and availability are close, compare matchup context as well. NFL.com’s 2026 Week 1 quarterback start/sit column describes its focus as fringe decisions informed by player outlook and matchup. Matchup can help distinguish close options, but it cannot make an uncertain player active or replace an assessment of role.
Make the decision before the right lineup deadline
Do not wait for late news without first checking when your platform locks the player. NFL Fantasy’s Official Rules 2025 say a player’s status can be changed only before his NFL team is scheduled to start, using NFL.com’s clock. The document also says the previous week’s lineup is used if a new lineup is not set before the deadline. These are NFL Fantasy rules; another service or a custom league may use different settings.

- Check your fantasy platform’s lineup-lock rule and the quarterback’s kickoff time.
- Find the latest official status and any information about his expected role.
- Confirm the backup’s likely role and kickoff time, especially if he plays earlier.
- Set a lineup you can live with before the applicable lock; do not assume you can swap players after kickoff.
When there is no clear answer
The title alone does not identify either player, the week, scoring format, platform, or your roster situation, so it cannot support a specific player recommendation. If you must decide before better availability information arrives, treat the choice as uncertain: favor role certainty when avoiding a zero is critical, and weigh upside more heavily when your situation can absorb the downside.
