Trusting BattlEye is a trade-off, not a yes-or-no security verdict. It is a kernel-level anti-cheat used by some games, and its privacy policy says it may process system-level information such as running processes, drivers, executable code, and game- and operating-system-related files and memory. BattlEye says it generally stores information only when it may indicate cheating, but that is the vendor’s representation—not an independent audit. Whether to accept it depends on the game and mode you want to play, the access you are comfortable granting, and whether the game offers an alternative.
What does BattlEye do, and why does it need elevated access?
BattlEye is an anti-cheat service that game publishers use to detect and deter cheating. In its FAQ for GTA Online, Rockstar describes it as kernel anti-cheat software. Kernel-level software can operate with deep system privileges, which may help an anti-cheat detect activity that ordinary applications cannot inspect as directly. Those privileges also make questions about access and compatibility reasonable.
BattlEye’s privacy policy identifies BattlEye Innovations e.K. as processor and Bastian Suter as the responsible person. It says processing supports a publisher’s purpose of preventing and detecting cheating. The policy lists categories it may process, including:
- IP addresses and game identifiers, such as an in-game name or account ID.
- Hardware device information and identifiers, which may include serial numbers.
- Information about the operating system that is running.
- Game- and operating-system-related files and memory.
- Running processes, drivers, and other executable code.
- Filenames, which may include the operating-system username.
The policy describes what BattlEye says it may process; it does not establish that every listed item is collected from every player in every session.

What does BattlEye say it stores or sends?
BattlEye says it follows data minimization and “generally will not store any information on most users.” It says information may be stored when it could indicate cheating. The policy also says information may be shared with the protected game’s publisher and specified partners or affiliates, and may be kept for the duration of the service for a game. It acknowledges automated decision-making. For data-rights requests, BattlEye directs users to the relevant game publisher; it also says restriction or erasure may lead to measures that prevent access to the game, including continued storage needed for that purpose. See the BattlEye Privacy Policy for its full terms.
In an accompanying explanation, BattlEye says it does not look at, check, transmit, or sell personal information such as documents, credit-card details, or passwords. It also says flagged executable code may be transmitted for analysis to identify new hacks, while memory contents are not otherwise transmitted to its servers. These are vendor assurances, not independently verified findings about the software’s operation.

Does BattlEye run all the time, and can you refuse it?
There is no universal answer: requirements depend on the game and sometimes the mode or platform. The publishers’ instructions differ:
| Game | What the publisher says | What refusing means |
|---|---|---|
| GTA Online | Rockstar says BattlEye is active during online play sessions. Depending on platform, it can be disabled for Story Mode. Official Rockstar Community RP servers do not require it. | You can use the documented Story Mode option where available, but that does not provide access to GTA Online with BattlEye disabled. Rockstar says detected active cheating may lead to account suspension or a ban. |
| Destiny 2 | Bungie says BattlEye is active while Destiny 2 is running and must be allowed for the game to launch. | Denying installation or uninstalling BattlEye prevents Destiny 2 from launching. Bungie says hacking, cheating, or attacks may result in removal under its Code of Conduct. |
| Rainbow Six Siege | Ubisoft’s FAQ says protection and scanning operate while Siege is running, including scanning RAM and game or system files. The FAQ is older, so check Ubisoft’s current guidance for the latest details. | Ubisoft says removing BattlEye prevents the game from launching. |

What are the practical trade-offs?
Accepting BattlEye can be necessary to play a game or its protected multiplayer mode, but it means accepting the anti-cheat’s system access and the publisher’s implementation. Declining it avoids running that game’s BattlEye component where an alternative exists, but may block the mode or the entire game. Neither choice by itself proves that BattlEye is malicious or that its assurances have been independently confirmed.

What if BattlEye causes a launch or compatibility problem?
Start with the current support page for your game and BattlEye’s Support FAQ. Compatibility advice can change as Windows, drivers, and anti-cheat software are updated. BattlEye’s FAQ search result has reported that Windows 11 Hardware-enforced Stack Protection may prevent its BEDaisy.sys driver from loading on systems affected by a compatibility issue; check the live FAQ for current status and instructions rather than changing security settings based on an old report.
Rockstar also warns that graphics-mod software can cause technical issues and that antivirus products may interfere with launch, including cases where an exception does not resolve the block. That is not a reason to disable antivirus or Windows security protections broadly. Use the game publisher’s troubleshooting steps and support channel, and make changes only when official instructions for your specific issue call for them.
