Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose online if you want to play with friends or use online characters and features. Choose True Offline if playing without relying on game servers matters more. The decision is important: offline and online characters are separate, cannot be transferred between modes, and require separate progression.
What changes between offline and online?
| Consideration | Online | True Offline |
|---|---|---|
| Play with friends | Yes. Online characters can party with other players in the same mode, according to the official multiplayer FAQ: Last Epoch multiplayer FAQ. | No. Offline characters cannot be played online or party with online players. |
| Connection to game services | Uses online characters that are server-authoritative, as described in the official FAQ. | Designed to let you play without relying on game servers. The 2026 Season 4 notes say True Offline remains available during downtime: Season 4 patch notes. |
| Character transfer | Online characters cannot be moved to offline. | Offline characters cannot be copied to online. Support explains that local saves can be edited, while online saves use a different structure: Last Epoch Support: character transfers. |
| Mode-specific details | Online character tab and region selection are available; cosmetics can be equipped on online characters. The 1.0 notes describe these contrasts, though they are not a complete inventory of current features: 1.0 patch notes. | Cosmetics cannot be equipped on offline characters. In Full Offline, the online character tab and region selection are unavailable, chat item linking is disabled, and you cannot return to the Landing Zone after choosing Play Offline, according to the 1.0 notes. |
When should you choose online?
Pick online if playing with friends is part of the plan, or if you want to build an online character and use online-specific features. The official multiplayer FAQ says online characters are server-authoritative and can party with others in the same mode. An offline character cannot join that online play, so do not choose offline expecting to convert the character later.
When should you choose True Offline?
Pick True Offline when avoiding dependence on game servers is your priority. It is also an option during server downtime, as stated in the Season 4 patch notes. True Offline should not be confused with Steam’s general “Offline Mode (still connected to the internet)”: Last Epoch Support identifies Full Offline as a separate launch setting for the game.
How to launch Last Epoch in True Offline
- In Steam, right-click Last Epoch in your library and select Properties.
- Under Launch Options, choose Play Full Offline.
- Launch the game and select your offline character. If changing the setting does not work, Last Epoch Support says you can add
--offlinemanually in the launch options. See the official Offline mode guide for the setting and distinction from Steam Offline Mode.
Can you switch a character or mode later?
No character transfer is supported in either direction. Support says offline saves cannot be copied to online because local files can be edited; online saves cannot be transferred to offline because their structure differs. Make a separate character in the mode you want rather than investing in one with the expectation of moving it later.
