Probably—but as a supplement to new games, not a substitute for them. Former Nintendo marketing leads Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have described the company historically holding completed remakes and ports until a gap opened in its release calendar. That account makes a case for using remakes to smooth a schedule. It does not establish that Nintendo still works that way, or that remakes alone can prevent a drought.
What former Nintendo marketing leads say about filling calendar gaps
On episode 217 of the Kit & Krysta Podcast, guest Lucy James asked whether Nintendo had held completed games until the right release window. Yang, a former Nintendo of America senior manager for creator relations and original content, said: “That totally happened though in the past where a lot of these things, they just sock away in the Nintendo vault.”

Yang described remakes and ports as projects that could be finished quickly, then released when the calendar had room. In her account, having such games ready gave Nintendo options for avoiding lulls during the Switch’s life cycle. It is a practical scheduling argument: a game that is already complete can give a publisher a release to place between larger projects.
But Yang left Nintendo in 2022 and said, “I don’t know how they’re doing these days.” She also suggested Switch 2 development had created a different situation. Her remarks are a former employee’s recollection of past practice, not an official account of Nintendo’s current planning.

Why more remakes could help—and what they cannot guarantee
They can make gaps easier to manage
When a new, large-scale game is not ready, a remake or port can offer players something familiar without requiring the same development path as an entirely new title. Yang and Ellis’ account suggests Nintendo has used that flexibility before. It supports the idea that a deeper remake slate could make release timing less dependent on every original project finishing on schedule; it does not prove how many remakes Nintendo could prepare, or how reliably they could be delivered.
They can open older games to new players
In a 2026 Famitsu interview reported by Nintendo Wire, Shigeru Miyamoto argued that younger players may not have had the chance to play games released years earlier. He said remaking those games to make them more playable can meet that demand. Reintroducing an older game can also help players discover a series’ history, though Miyamoto’s view that this can lead to future development is not a promise of a sequel.

They may crowd out the qualities that make Nintendo distinct
Ellis and Yang have also warned that nostalgia can become a risky default. In their view, leaning too heavily on familiar properties can weaken Nintendo’s creative identity and make it harder to attract people who are not already fans. Their point is not that remakes are inherently bad: it is that a dependable run of recognizable titles should not displace the experimentation that gives players a reason to care about the next new game.
Nintendo has not promised a continuous remake pipeline
In 2019, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company had “no defined policy to continuously release more remakes in future.” He said nostalgia was not the main criterion, emphasizing whether developers were passionate about remaking a game and whether they could create new experiences and fun. He pointed to The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening as a case where nostalgic elements and new features both resonated with consumers.

That statement is historical guidance, not confirmation of Nintendo’s present policy. It nevertheless helps frame the decision: a remake should offer more than recognition of an old name. It should give developers a reason to make it and players a meaningful way to experience the game now.
What the recent examples do—and do not—show
A July 2026 TechRadar report says a Star Fox 64 remake had been released on Switch 2 and that a Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was planned for 2026. The same report notes the original Ocarina of Time launched on Nintendo 64 in 1998 and received a 3DS remaster in 2011. Those examples show renewed interest in established games, but the report does not establish a precise launch date or physical retail edition for the planned remake. Check Nintendo’s current release information for availability.

Release timing matters even when a game has a famous name. GamesRadar reported Yang saying she would choose Grand Theft Auto if it launched on the same day as a faithful Ocarina of Time remake. That is her personal assessment, not a universal measure of audience preference, but it illustrates why simply filling a calendar slot is not enough: a remake can still compete for attention with other releases.

“PS5-like game droughts” is a concern in the title, not a measured comparison established by the available evidence. There is no comparable release-cadence dataset here showing that the PS5 has a specific drought pattern, or that Nintendo remakes would prevent one. Without like-for-like release data, it is more accurate to treat the comparison as shorthand for players’ frustration when a platform has too few games they want to play—not as proof of a platform-wide statistic or a causal relationship.

The stronger case is for balance, not remakes at any cost
A remake-led schedule and one centered on new games each solve different problems. Remakes can be more dependable calendar options and bring older titles within reach of players who missed them. New games give developers more room to create unfamiliar experiences and help a platform reach people who are not already invested in its history. Neither approach guarantees broad appeal or prevents competing releases from taking attention.
Nintendo should release more remakes when a project has a clear creative purpose and can fill a genuine gap without pushing original games aside. The former marketing leads’ account shows why publishers may value that flexibility; Furukawa’s remarks and Ellis and Yang’s criticism explain why flexibility should not turn into a nostalgia-only strategy.
