Spoilers for Wyll’s Act Three quest and the Iron Throne. If you want Wyll to keep his freedom, break the contract: Duke Ravengard can still be rescued, but Mizora makes his escape more dangerous. Signing gives Mizora’s promised help and Ravengard’s location in exchange for Wyll’s eternal service to her and Zariel. The choice is freedom versus assistance—not a guaranteed choice between Wyll’s freedom and his father’s life.
What does Wyll’s contract choice change?
After Gortash’s coronation, Mizora asks the party to return to camp. Following a long rest, she offers a new contract: Wyll can accept eternal service to Zariel in exchange for her help rescuing his father, Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard. If he signs, she reveals that Ravengard is being held in the Iron Throne and promises to keep him safe. If he refuses, she says the Duke is as good as dead.
That threat is Mizora’s framing of the bargain, not proof that Ravengard is impossible to save. The documented quest path lets the party find and rescue him even after Wyll breaks the pact. The difference is that Mizora interferes during the escape.
| Choice | Wyll’s pact | Ravengard’s rescue | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sign Mizora’s offer | Wyll accepts eternal service to Mizora and Zariel. | Mizora reveals the Iron Throne and promises to help keep Ravengard safe. | Promised assistance in exchange for Wyll’s freedom. |
| Break the pact | Wyll refuses the new eternal obligation. | The party can still find and rescue Ravengard, but Mizora attacks during the escape. | Wyll keeps his freedom, while the rescue becomes more hazardous. |
For players who value Wyll’s autonomy, breaking the pact is the stronger choice, provided you are ready to handle the more dangerous escape. Signing may fit better if you prioritize Mizora’s promised aid or are role-playing Wyll as willing to sacrifice his future for his father.

Can you save Duke Ravengard after breaking the pact?
Yes. The quest journal says Wyll severed his pact even after Mizora hinted she could help locate and rescue Ravengard, then adds: “It would seem the duke is as good as dead, but perhaps we might still find and save him.” The journal’s uncertainty reflects the challenge ahead; it does not rule out a rescue.
When Ravengard leaves his cell after Wyll has broken the pact, Mizora can make him kneel for a turn and summon explosive spiderlings. They can burst on their turn or when killed, so the danger is not limited to letting them reach him.

How to prepare for the Iron Throne rescue
- Attend Gortash’s coronation and speak with Mizora when she asks you to return to camp. After the camp scene, finish the conversation before entering the Iron Throne. A walkthrough warns that skipping this event can leave Ravengard dead.
- Find Ravengard in the Iron Throne and open his cell.
- Once he is free, protect him and move him away from the spiderlings quickly. Healing and fire resistance can help him survive; protective effects or invisibility may help manage the danger.
- Use movement options such as Haste, Dimension Door, or Arcane Gate to shorten the time he is exposed. Sanctuary is another option, but it does not stop the spiderlings’ burst.
These are possible countermeasures, not a guarantee: the escape still depends on how the encounter unfolds and the party’s available abilities.

Earlier decisions and Wyll’s status can affect which branch is available. If Ravengard is already dead before Mizora makes her offer, the game may present a different bargain: she can offer resurrection in exchange for Wyll renewing his pact. Do not assume every save will present the same timing or options.
