It does not matter which route you choose first: you can complete both, and the initial choice does not change the story or quest rewards. Pick Hanu to start toward Kozama’uka, or Pelu to start toward Urqopacha—whichever people and setting appeal to you more.
Does it matter if I pick Hanu or Pelu first?
No. After completing “The Rite of Succession,” you choose which route to take first. The game temporarily locks you out of the other route while you complete the first, then makes the other route available. The initial choice does not affect story elements or quest rewards. Destructoid’s 2024 report lists 994,560 EXP and 1,001 Gil for each option; rewards can change between game versions, so check the current quest reward in your client.
What does each route lead to?

The choice follows “The Rite of Succession.” It determines the order in which you begin the two routes, not which one you can ultimately complete. The quest dialogue describes the Hanuhanu as cheerful people who love festivals and the Pelu as business-minded folk from Urqopacha.

Pick Hanu if you would rather begin with the Hanuhanu and their home village of Ok’hanu in Kozama’uka.

Choose Pelu for Urqopacha
Pick Pelu if you would rather begin with the Pelupelu and their village of Wachunpelo in Urqopacha.
There is no established advantage in route length, efficiency, or rewards for choosing one first. This is a preference about where and with whom to start.
