For ticket holders in Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos – Global, the choice came down to the research reward you wanted: X Version led to Xerneas and the X Version medal; Y Version led to Yveltal and the Y Version medal. Each encounter had a game-inspired Special Background. Neither option was established as objectively better for gameplay, so the best choice was the Pokémon, medal, and background you preferred.

These were the branching Special Research rewards for ticket holders. The official Pokémon GO Tour: Kalos – Global event page does not identify a gameplay advantage for either branch, so there is no evidence-based strategic winner.
How should you decide?
- Choose X if you would rather receive the Xerneas research encounter and commemorate Pokémon X with its medal and background.
- Choose Y if you would rather receive the Yveltal research encounter and commemorate Pokémon Y with its medal and background.
The games Pokémon X and Pokémon Y for Nintendo 3DS first featured the Kalos region; the Pokémon GO choice echoed that game pairing.
Could you encounter the other Legendary Pokémon elsewhere?
Yes. Xerneas and Yveltal also appeared in five-star raids during the event. Raid catches could receive the corresponding Special Background: the Pokémon X-inspired background for Xerneas or the Pokémon Y-inspired background for Yveltal. The research choice determined which Pokémon you received for completing that branch; it should not be confused with the event’s separate raid opportunities.

Who needed to make the choice?
The global event was free to join, but the branching Special Research and its X-or-Y path rewards were ticket-holder content. The ticket also offered extra research and bonuses, including an increased chance to encounter Shiny Pokémon; that increased chance was not a guarantee. The X/Y decision was therefore relevant to ticket holders pursuing the research, not a prerequisite for joining the free event.
