Keen Software House announced Space Engineers 2 on December 19, 2024, as a sequel built on its VRAGE3 engine. The reveal promised major changes to construction, physics, destruction and visuals—but it described the project’s direction and an initial Creative Mode vertical slice, not a finished game. Keen is developing the sequel in stages and warns that its Early Access experience is unpolished.
What did Keen announce for Space Engineers 2?
The December 2024 reveal centered on a Creative Mode slice and a redesigned approach to building. Keen presented the following as planned features for the sequel, rather than independently verified performance results.
Construction and creative tools
- A unified 25 cm grid: The announced building system uses one grid scale, replacing the need to work across different grid sizes.
- Blueprint improvements: The reveal included blueprint placement and partial copying.
- More direct building controls: Undo and redo, symmetry tools, line and plane building tools, and a paint tool were part of the announced toolkit.
Movement, physics and presentation
Keen announced grid speeds of up to about 300 m/s and a safe-speed system intended to prevent damage below 20 m/s. The reveal also described magboots with camera stabilization.
For physics and visuals, the announced direction included new physics, dynamic fractures and debris, ray tracing, global illumination, tessellated terrain, parallax mapping and enhanced lighting. These are descriptions of features announced for the project, not evidence of measured performance or a tested physics comparison.

#1 Best Overall
- DOMINATE SPACE WITH DUAL STICKS - Command every axis of your spaceship with a complete HOSAS system featuring two detachable ambidextrous grips and two bases, each equipped with a central throttle, giving you a total of 88 action buttons so you can execute complex maneuvers, manage weapons, and navigate the cosmos without ever lifting your hands from the controls.
- LOADED WITH INTUITIVE FLIGHT CONTROLS - Each flight joystick is packed with 21 action buttons including 2 triggers, 2 hat switches, 1 ministick, and 1 thumbwheel, placing every critical function at your fingertips so you can seamlessly switch between combat, navigation, and system management during intense space flight simulation sessions.
- ULTRA PRECISE HALL EFFECT TECHNOLOGY - Your inputs register with pinpoint accuracy thanks to H.E.A.R.T. HallEffect AccuRate Technology delivering 16 bit resolution across X, Y, and Z axes. Meaning zero drift and zero deadzone so every subtle correction translates flawlessly into your flight simulator joystick movements for years of reliable performance.
- MAXIMUM COMFORT FOR LONG SESSIONS - Interchangeable wrist rests and thumb rests let you customize the ergonomic fit to your hands, while integrated stability supports keep each base firmly planted on your desk, so you can enjoy marathon space sim sessions without fatigue or wobble breaking your immersion in the cockpit.
- ICONIC SCI-FI DESIGN THAT EXPANDS - Backlit joysticks inspired by legendary science fiction blockbusters make your flight sim controller setup look as stunning as it performs, and fully removable grips and bases are compatible with the broader Thrustmaster ecosystem so you can expand and evolve your pc flight stick configuration over time.
How is Space Engineers 2 being developed?
Keen describes its development method as a series of “vertical slices”: playable portions that showcase particular core features and improvements. The first slice focused on Creative Mode, with additional systems intended to arrive in stages. That means the reveal was not a promise that every planned feature would be present in a complete sequel at launch.
Keen’s Early Access page is explicit about the trade-off: “If you’re not ready for an unpolished experience, this may not be the right time to jump in.” For players who want a finished, stable experience, that warning matters more than the scale of the announced feature list.

What has changed since the original reveal?
The official roadmap records updates beyond the initial Creative Mode slice. For example, the VS2.3 page describes wheels and hinges; automation blocks including Event Controller, Timer and Sensor; warheads; wind physics; combat features; and performance work. Those examples show how the project has expanded past the original reveal, but they do not make the sequel a complete or final game.
The roadmap is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that every future item has shipped. On October 8, 2026, it listed the July 6, 2026 “Drive, Automate & Detonate” update and the August 17, 2026 “Smoother, Stable & Faster” update. It still showed hostile encounters for October 19, 2026, four-player cooperative gameplay for early 2027, and water for 2027; those were future plans on that date.

- PLAY AS HAL OR THE CREW: In this tense one-vs-many board game, one player controls the rogue AI HAL while the rest of the crew fights to survive and complete their mission to Jupiter.
- UNIQUE CREWMEMBER ABILITIES: Each crewmember has a distinct power that helps them outwit HAL, bypass sabotage, and complete critical logic sequences in the HAL Core.
- HIGH-STAKES STRATEGY & TENSION: HAL takes multiple turns and actively sabotages systems and life support. Every player decision can mean the difference between success and sudden death.
- MULTIPLE PATHS TO VICTORY: HAL wins by shutting down three systems or terminating life support. The crew wins by solving three logic sequences before time runs out.
- INSPIRED BY A SCI-FI MASTERPIECE: Based on 2001: A Space Odyssey, this thrilling game delivers a cinematic experience full of suspense, betrayal, and survival.
Is Space Engineers 2 a replacement for the original?
Keen has said that the two games will coexist, so the sequel should not be treated as an automatic replacement for Space Engineers. The publisher reported that the original had sold more than 5 million copies across PC, Xbox and PlayStation in 2025; that figure is for the first game, not Space Engineers 2.
| What to compare | What the sequel’s announcement establishes |
|---|---|
| Building | A unified 25 cm grid and new blueprint and creative-building tools were announced. |
| Physics and visuals | New physics, dynamic fractures and debris, and rendering features were announced; no independent benchmark or measured comparison is established. |
| Completeness | Staged vertical-slice development and an unpolished Early Access warning mean the game is still evolving. |
| Hardware | Keen says rendering, physics simulation and grid detail demand more computational power than in the original; a specific adequate PC configuration is not established here. |
When does Space Engineers 2 come out, and is it in Early Access?
Space Engineers 2 is available through Steam Early Access, where Keen is releasing its staged development slices. The roadmap includes future milestones, so its entries should be read as plans rather than proof that a feature is already available. Check the current Steam listing and official roadmap for the latest release status.

- 38 programmable inputs and 8 axes
- High-resolution 16-bit Hall-Effect sensors for Flightstick II control
- Dual levers, thumbstick, and multi-function wheel provide versatile analog control
- Ambidextrous design with adjustable wrist and thumb rests for lasting comfort
- Integrated rudder twist with lock option for flexible control setups
Can your PC run Space Engineers 2?
Keen says the sequel’s rendering, physics simulation and grid detail require more computational power than Space Engineers 1, and that optimization is ongoing. That qualitative comparison is not enough to identify a particular graphics card or PC as suitable. Check the current system requirements on the official Steam listing before buying, especially as the game continues to change.
