Should You Connect Your PS5 to HDMI ARC? The Best TV and Soundbar Setup

For most setups, connect the PS5 to the TV’s best gaming HDMI input and the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. Here’s how to choose the route and avoid losing video or audio features.

For most PS5 setups, connect the console directly to the TV’s best HDMI input for gaming, then connect the soundbar or AV receiver to the TV’s HDMI eARC/ARC port. ARC is the TV’s audio-return connection; it is not a special PS5 input. Use eARC when both devices support it, and connect the PS5 through a soundbar or receiver only if that device passes through every video feature you want.

What HDMI ARC does—and which device uses it

The PS5 sends video and audio out of its HDMI OUT port. The TV receives that signal. ARC (Audio Return Channel) and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) let the TV send audio back over HDMI to a soundbar or receiver connected to the TV port marked ARC or eARC/ARC.

Typical signal path:

  • PS5 → TV: video and audio from the console.
  • TV → soundbar or receiver through ARC/eARC: audio returned from the TV.

That means you normally connect the soundbar or receiver—not the PS5—to the TV’s ARC/eARC port. Sony’s TV connection guide illustrates the audio system on the ARC/eARC port and an external source on a separate TV input.

Choose the connection that fits your equipment

Best for most PS5 owners: console to TV, audio system to eARC

PS5 HDMI OUT → TV HDMI input for 4K/120Hz gaming
TV HDMI eARC/ARC → soundbar or receiver HDMI eARC/ARC OUT

This keeps the PS5’s video signal out of the soundbar’s passthrough chain, which is useful if that device accepts 4K but cannot pass through 4K/120Hz, VRR, or ALLM. The TV must support the audio formats you want to pass back to the sound system.

Use the soundbar or receiver as the HDMI hub only after checking passthrough

PS5 → soundbar or receiver HDMI IN
Soundbar or receiver HDMI OUT → TV

This arrangement can make sense when the TV cannot pass the desired audio format, has too few suitable HDMI inputs, or the audio device is intended to switch sources. Check the specifications for the exact input and output: “4K” alone does not confirm 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, or the HDR formats you use. Some devices pass only 4K/60Hz; some support high-refresh features on only selected inputs, or require a firmware update.

Optical is a fallback

PS5 → TV
TV optical output → soundbar or receiver

Use optical if ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable and you accept its more limited audio-format support. It is not the preferred route for a PS5 home-theater system.

ARC versus eARC: what changes for a PS5

Both return TV audio to an external system, but eARC has substantially more audio bandwidth. Sony states that eARC bandwidth can reach 37 Mbps and lists support for formats including uncompressed 5.1/7.1, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X. The full chain—PS5, TV, soundbar or receiver, cables, software, and selected format—must support the signal.

Capability ARC eARC
Audio bandwidth Lower; suited to stereo and many compressed formats Higher; supports more high-bandwidth formats when the devices support them
Compressed Dolby Digital / Dolby Digital Plus Commonly supported; confirm device compatibility Supported, subject to the devices and content
Uncompressed multichannel PCM Generally limited or dependent on implementation Supports uncompressed 5.1/7.1 when the chain supports it
Dolby TrueHD, including TrueHD-based Atmos Not normally supported Supported when the devices and content support it
DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X Not normally supported Supported when the devices and content support it
Cable guidance Follow the TV and sound-system manuals Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet

An eARC TV cannot upgrade an ARC-only soundbar: the connection remains limited by the soundbar’s ARC capability. And eARC’s added format support does not guarantee an audible improvement; that depends on the source, speakers, room, and audio processing. See Sony’s eARC explanation for its format and cable guidance.

Check the PS5’s video path before choosing a port

PlayStation says the PS5 supports 4K at 120Hz with compatible HDMI 2.1 equipment, and supports VRR with compatible displays. The TV’s specific port must support the features you want; an “HDMI 2.1” label by itself does not establish that every port supports every feature. HDR and ALLM also depend on the connected equipment and settings. ARC/eARC carries audio and does not improve graphics.

  1. Connect the PS5 to a TV input documented for the resolution and refresh rate you want. Enable that input’s manufacturer-specific enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode if required.
  2. Connect the TV port labeled eARC/ARC to the soundbar or receiver’s matching HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) port.
  3. On the TV, enable eARC and select the external audio system as the speaker output. Set digital audio output to a supported option such as Passthrough, Bitstream, or Auto if the TV provides it.
  4. Confirm that the soundbar or receiver is set to TV Audio, ARC, or eARC, and enable eARC on that device if applicable.
  5. On the PS5, open Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output. Check the connected HDMI device information and confirm the available resolution, VRR, and HDR support. Test 120Hz in a game that supports it; the console’s capability does not mean every game runs at 120Hz.

PlayStation’s 4K resolution guide documents the video-output menu. If a feature disappears after routing the console through an audio device, connect the PS5 directly to the TV and check again.

Set PS5 audio according to the actual connection

Open Settings → Sound → Audio Output. PlayStation lists Output Device, HDMI Device Type, AV Amplifier channel count, and Audio Format (Priority); options can vary with the connected equipment and configuration. Its audio settings guide explains these controls.

PS5 connected to the TV

  • Set HDMI Device Type to TV unless the TV or audio-system documentation calls for another choice.
  • Try Linear PCM if the TV and eARC chain pass multichannel PCM correctly. If you get stereo, silence, or another problem, test a supported Dolby or DTS option instead.

PS5 connected directly to an AV receiver

  • Choose AV Amplifier for HDMI Device Type.
  • Set Number of Channels to match the physical speaker layout.
  • Start with Linear PCM for games when the receiver and connection support it; test Dolby or DTS if required by the receiver or preferred for your setup.

There is no universal best Audio Format (Priority). The right choice is one the full chain accepts without unwanted silence, downmixing, transcoding, or delay. If you want volume and power control through HDMI, enable HDMI-CEC on the relevant devices; CEC is separate from audio-format support and can have its own handshake issues.

Know what to expect from games, discs, and apps

Do not infer an audio format from a Dolby Atmos logo on a soundbar or from the format reported by one source. PlayStation’s PS5 Ultimate FAQ lists Linear PCM up to 7.1 channels and identifies Dolby Atmos and DTS:X for Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray disc video on supported devices. That statement does not mean every game or streaming app outputs Atmos.

ARC can be sufficient for stereo, many TV streaming formats, and compressed surround such as Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus when the devices support them. Some Atmos delivered through Dolby Digital Plus may work over ARC, depending on the content and equipment; legacy ARC generally does not carry Dolby TrueHD-based Atmos. For lossless disc formats or uncompressed multichannel audio, eARC is the more capable return path, provided every device in the chain supports the selected format.

Equipment combinations: the practical decision

Your equipment Practical connection What to check
TV and soundbar/receiver both support eARC PS5 → TV; TV eARC → audio system TV audio passthrough, eARC enabled on both devices, and the desired PS5 audio format
TV supports eARC; soundbar supports ARC only PS5 → TV; TV ARC/eARC → soundbar ARC The soundbar remains the limit; choose ARC-suitable audio expectations
TV has ARC only; audio device has eARC Try PS5 → TV and TV ARC → audio device; if the TV cannot pass the wanted audio, consider PS5 → audio device → TV Whether the TV passes the selected format, and whether the audio device passes the PS5’s video features
Soundbar or receiver passthrough is limited to 4K/60Hz PS5 → TV; TV ARC/eARC → audio system Whether the TV can return the audio format you need
Audio system has optical only PS5 → TV; TV optical → audio system Accept the more limited format support; use HDMI video directly to the TV
TV has too few high-bandwidth inputs Use a compatible receiver/input or a verified HDMI switch Exact 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and HDCP support—not just “8K” or “HDMI 2.1” branding

A TV may have only one HDMI 2.1 input and use it for eARC. Check the exact TV manual and port behavior before planning around that port. Possible compromises include using a compatible receiver input, a properly specified switch, or accepting lower video refresh or more limited audio. Do not assume a switch or extractor preserves the features you need unless its specifications confirm them.

Use the right HDMI cables, not just pricier ones

Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. PlayStation recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 connections; use a certified one for the PS5-to-TV link if you need 4K/120Hz. For TV-to-soundbar eARC, Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet. A cable that works at 4K/60Hz may still fail at 4K/120Hz. Replace a cable when testing points to a reliability or compatibility problem, not simply because a package advertises “8K.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot missing audio or video features

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV, temporarily removing the soundbar or receiver from the video path. Verify the TV input and test the PS5 signal.
  2. Check that the soundbar or receiver is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port, and that its selected input is TV Audio, ARC, or eARC.
  3. Enable eARC on both devices where available. Set the TV’s digital audio output to a supported Passthrough, Bitstream, or Auto mode.
  4. Restart the TV, soundbar or receiver, and PS5. If the problem persists, check for device firmware updates.
  5. Try another HDMI cable and another suitable TV input. For 4K/120Hz, use the TV input documented for that feature.
  6. Check the audio device’s supported formats and HDMI passthrough specifications. Test a different PS5 Audio Format (Priority), such as Linear PCM versus a supported Dolby or DTS format.
  7. If you reconnect the full chain, connect and start the TV first, the audio device second, and the PS5 last.

PlayStation’s PS5 support page also recommends testing a direct-to-TV connection, checking firmware, trying another HDMI cable, and trying another HDMI port. If sound works but volume or power control does not, investigate HDMI-CEC separately; audio return can work even when device control does not.

Final compatibility check

  • The PS5 is connected to a TV port that supports the resolution, refresh rate, and gaming features you want.
  • The TV and sound system are connected through their ARC/eARC ports, with eARC enabled where supported.
  • The sound system’s passthrough—if the PS5 passes through it—explicitly supports your required 4K/120Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDR, and HDCP features.
  • The selected PS5 audio device type matches the console’s actual HDMI connection, and amplifier channels match the speaker layout.
  • The TV’s audio output and PS5 Audio Format (Priority) are compatible with the entire chain.
  • The cables are appropriate for their jobs: Ultra High Speed for high-bandwidth PS5 video when needed, and High-Speed with Ethernet or Ultra High Speed for eARC.
