Choose Standalone if you mainly want CurseForge with fewer bundled components. Choose Overwolf if you need the broader supported-game list, in-game overlay, or second-monitor features. On Windows, both are official CurseForge options, but they are not identical. Overwolf is powered by—and installs—the Overwolf Client, while Standalone is the separate CurseForge option.

CurseForge’s official guide says the primary functional difference on Windows is game support: the Overwolf version supports more games. What actually happens when you install each version?
Standalone
The Standalone download installs the separate CurseForge application. It is the straightforward choice if your priority is managing supported mods and modpacks without the Overwolf Client.

The Overwolf option is not merely a differently branded CurseForge installer. The product page explicitly says that the CurseForge App is powered by the Overwolf Client and that downloading it will install the Overwolf Client. Select it when Overwolf’s additional game coverage or features are useful to you.

The Overwolf-backed app currently lists support for:

This list can change, so check the current product page before deciding. The official documentation does not establish that Standalone is Minecraft-only; the reliable distinction is that Overwolf supports more games.
Important exception: some games use an in-game mod browser
Installing Overwolf does not make every CurseForge game available through the desktop app. CurseForge says some games are not available in either the CurseForge application, Overwolf, or Standalone because their mod browser operates inside the game itself. Examples include Hogwarts Legacy, ARK: Survival Ascended, and inZOI.

What should Minecraft players choose?
For Minecraft Java Edition, either Windows version can be appropriate. Choose Standalone if you only need CurseForge for Minecraft and do not want the Overwolf Client. Choose Overwolf if you also use another game supported by the Overwolf edition or specifically want its overlay and second-monitor features.
To set up Minecraft after installing the app:
- Open CurseForge and click the Minecraft grass-block icon.
- When CurseForge asks where to put the modding folder, select Standard (Recommended) for the default location, or choose a custom folder if you deliberately keep game files elsewhere.
- Open the Discover tab.
- Click Install on a mod or modpack.
For modpacks, you can also use the website: click Browse All, choose Modpacks in the Filters section, and apply category filters. On a modpack project page, the upper-right area offers installation through CurseForge or a manual download.
Do not treat a downloaded modpack ZIP as a complete pack
A manually downloaded modpack ZIP is normally not a self-contained copy containing every file. CurseForge says it mainly includes a manifest, configuration files, and third-party projects that are unavailable on CurseForge. For the normal automated installation, use the project page’s CurseForge installation option or install the pack from the app.

- macOS: the official download page exposes one option, Download on Mac.
- Linux: the official page exposes two standalone packages: Download Standalone (.deb) and Download Standalone (.AppImage).
Use the package format that matches your Linux distribution and preferred installation method. The Overwolf Client choice described above is the Windows-specific alternative.
Current version information
As of September 13, 2026, the Overwolf app-store entry reports CurseForge version 1.316.0.7372 and Electron build 1.316.0-37372, dated August 2, 2026. CurseForge published release notes for version 1.316 on August 5, 2026.
That release changed modpack-install progress so the progress bar tracks actual data downloaded rather than an earlier estimate. It also made bulk mod deletion faster and kept searches in My Mods and My Modpacks responsive while typing. Fixes included problems creating a vanilla Minecraft profile in the Overwolf app, CurseForge links failing to open the app, sign-in hanging when saved login data could not be read, corrupted groups or preferences files, and crashes during game-folder detection. The Linux build also fixed temporary files accumulating in /tmp. Read the official 1.316 release notes for the complete list.
How to download the right version
- Go to the CurseForge website and click Get CurseForge App in the top-right corner.
- On Windows, select Download Standalone if you want the separate app, or Download on Overwolf if you want the Overwolf-powered edition.
- On macOS, select Download on Mac.
- On Linux, choose either Download Standalone (.deb) or Download Standalone (.AppImage).
If you are unsure on Windows, start with Standalone. Move to Overwolf only when your game is unsupported there or you need Overwolf-specific functionality. This avoids installing the Overwolf Client without a clear reason.

Overwolf installation problems on Windows
If you choose Overwolf and the installer fails, use the failure message to select the least invasive fix. The official Overwolf installation troubleshooting guide notes that its older troubleshooting article applies only to the non-Electron version and directs Electron users to a separate guide.
“We have encountered a problem during the installation…”
This usually means the installer could not download or install required files. Update Windows first. If that does not help, try the setup installer.
Installation stops at “Extracting Files”
Use the setup installer rather than the regular installer.

“Connection Error”
Possible causes include antivirus or firewall interference, a VPN, unstable Wi-Fi, ISP blocking, Overwolf server downtime, or a corrupted .NET machine.config. Temporarily isolate network and security causes carefully, then retry. Do not permanently disable security software without understanding the risk.

The installer never starts or finishes
Open Control Panel → Programs or Programs and Features → Turn Windows features on or off. Ensure .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0) is enabled, enable another listed .NET version as directed by Overwolf’s guide, and consider reinstalling .NET Framework 4.8 if required.
The downloaded installer disappears
Antivirus software or a download manager may remove it. Your browser may report Removed or Failed – Download error. Overwolf specifically names SAntivirus/Segurazo as one possible cause. Verify the detection before allowing or restoring any file.
Overwolf will not launch or install with MSI Afterburner
RivaTuner Statistics Server can interfere with Overwolf. Close RivaTuner completely; you may need to close MSI Afterburner first.
Last resort: clean Overwolf reinstall
Use this only after the simpler fixes fail:
- Open Start → Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Uninstall Overwolf.
- Delete any remaining
C:Program Files (x86)Overwolffolder. - Press Windows Key + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Delete the Overwolf folder.
- Download and install Overwolf again.
The official troubleshooting guide also documents repairing a corrupted .NET configuration by working in the machine.config locations under C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework and Framework64. Because this changes Windows configuration files, follow Overwolf’s exact procedure and make a backup first.
Final decision
For most Windows users who only need CurseForge for one supported game—especially Minecraft—Standalone is the simpler default. Select Overwolf when you need its broader supported-game coverage, in-game overlay, or second-monitor support, and accept that it installs the Overwolf Client. Neither option supports every CurseForge-related game, so verify your specific game before downloading.
