Keep the higher-CP Pokémon when you need one ready to battle now; favor the better appraisal when choosing a same-species Pokémon to build for raids or Master League. For Great and Ultra League, compare the species’ PvP IV spread instead: a low-Attack, high-Defense-and-HP Pokémon can perform better under the CP cap. Powering up or evolving does not improve IVs.
CP and appraisal tell you different things
CP is a snapshot of a Pokémon’s current combat power, reflecting its species, IVs, and level. It helps indicate how developed that individual is now, but it is not a direct measure of its long-term potential.
Appraisal shows its Attack, Defense, and HP IVs—the individual values that contribute to its stats. Niantic’s appraisal guide explains the star rating and stat bars, and notes that evolving or powering up will not improve appraisal. Purifying a Shadow Pokémon does improve its appraisal.
When higher CP is the better choice
You need a Pokémon for a team now
A higher-CP Pokémon is often closer to battle-ready, so it may save Candy and Stardust compared with a lower-CP candidate. If you need a usable team immediately, current CP and the resources you have available can matter more than a difference in appraisal.

You are choosing a long-term raid or Master League build
For the same species in raids or uncapped Master League, compare appraisal when deciding which individual to invest in; better IVs are useful all else being equal. But account for starting CP: a high-level, high-CP candidate may be more practical if you want to avoid substantial upgrades. The right choice depends on whether you value the appraisal difference or the resources and time needed to build it.
Why Great and Ultra League can favor a different IV spread
Great League has a 1,500 CP cap and Ultra League a 2,500 CP cap; Master League is uncapped, according to the Trainer Hub league guide. Under a cap, a Pokémon with lower Attack and higher Defense or HP may be able to reach a higher level before hitting the limit. That can make it a stronger league build than a Pokémon with a higher star rating.

There is no single best spread for every species or league. Check the specific Pokémon’s PvP ranking or spread for the format you intend to play, rather than assuming the highest appraisal is best. Current formats and league rules can change, so confirm the in-game rules before investing.

Powering up or evolving
Powering up can raise CP, but it will not change the appraisal. Evolving also does not improve IVs, so do not spend resources on a low-IV Pokémon expecting its bars or stars to get better. Purification is the stated exception for Shadow Pokémon.

Trading
Trading can change a Pokémon’s stats and appraisal. Niantic says stats change randomly within a range during a trade, with minimum values determined by Friendship level; the Help Center also notes that CP, HP, and other stats change. See Niantic’s trading guide and its trading help page. Do not treat the appraisal before a trade as guaranteed to remain the same afterward.

A quick way to choose
- Choose the role first: immediate battle use, raids, Master League, Great League, or Ultra League.
- For immediate use, compare current CP and how much upgrading you can afford; the higher-CP individual may be ready sooner.
- For raids or Master League, compare same-species appraisals alongside current CP and the investment each candidate needs.
- For Great or Ultra League, look up that species’ league-specific IV spread and check the current CP cap in-game.
- Do not upgrade to change IVs: powering up and evolving do not improve appraisal.
