Usually, keep one Ditto if you care about completing your Pokédex or have an unfinished research task that asks you to catch one. Transfer extra Dittos if you need storage and have no personal reason to keep them. Ditto is not eligible for GO Battle League or Trainer Battles, and its use in Gyms and raids is mostly situational.
When it makes sense to keep a Ditto
For your collection
Ditto is its own Pokédex species and does not evolve, according to The Pokémon Company International’s Pokédex. Keeping one is a straightforward collection choice; that does not make duplicates necessary. Hold onto additional copies if you personally collect them, including for a preferred variant.

For an unfinished research task
Niantic explains that research tasks can require catching particular Pokémon in its guide to research types. If your active task specifically names Ditto, catching one is relevant until you complete that objective. The guide does not establish that a Ditto-specific task is active now, or that you need to keep the Pokémon after finishing the task.
How useful is Ditto in battles?
GO Battle League and Trainer Battles
Ditto cannot be used in GO Battle League or Trainer Battles, according to Pokémon GO Hub’s current Ditto reference. Niantic’s Trainer Battles overview explains the general format, but the Ditto-specific restriction is documented by Pokémon GO Hub.

#1 Best Overall
- The Ditto Sitting Cuties Plush is weighted with microbeads, so it sits up when you put it on a flat surface. This palm-sized plush is a fun, charming way to show off a favorite Normal-type Pokémon originally discovered in Kanto!
- Sits up easily on a desk, shelf, or other flat surface
- Care Instructions: Hand Wash Only. Flat Drying In The Shade
- Item Dimensions: 4.5 x 2.5 x 4.7 inches (11.4 x 6.3 x 11.9 cm)
- Pokémon Center Original
Gyms and raids
Ditto can be used in Gym Battles and Raid Battles and can be placed in Gyms, according to the same Pokémon GO Hub reference. Its Transform copies the opponent’s species and combat attributes, but Ditto retains its own HP, level, and IVs. Its low HP remains a weakness after transforming, so copying a strong opponent does not automatically make it a durable attacker.
That limitation matters because Niantic says Pokémon performance in Gym battles is primarily influenced by HP and CP, and generally recommends high-CP, high-HP Pokémon in its Gym battle guide. Ditto can be a novelty or a situational pick, but the available mechanics do not make it a sensible general power-up investment.

- Pokémon Center Original
A practical keep-or-transfer rule
- Keep one for your collection, or while an active task still requires you to catch Ditto.
- Keep extras only if you have a personal collecting goal or a specific use for them, such as occasional Gym or raid novelty.
- Transfer the rest when storage matters more than keeping duplicates.
The Play! Pokémon Championship Series rules PDF published September 29, 2023 also lists Ditto among Pokémon not permitted in those Pokémon GO events: Pokémon GO Tournament Rules. Those are organized-event rules, not a substitute for checking current event regulations, and they are separate from the regular GO Battle League restriction.
