The updated guide from KCD2.org says it unlocks after riding her for 35 km, and its reference stats put perked Pebbles ahead of Herring in stamina and carrying capacity, tied in speed, but behind in courage. After that, switching makes sense if you want Herring’s courage, need a different horse for a specific job, or simply prefer him.
How to get Pebbles back
After Henry is released from the stocks in Troskowitz, follow Bara’s lead to the Semine stables and speak with Groom Ballatay. Insider Gaming describes a speech or presence check that can let you recover Pebbles without paying; buying her is the fallback. The price may depend on dialogue and reputation, so do not count on a fixed amount. Insider Gaming’s Pebbles guide covers the route.
If you want to keep her, make the recovery choice when you meet Ballatay rather than assuming you can always reclaim her later. Recovery options can depend on story or world state.
Why Pebbles is worth keeping for 35 km
KCD2.org says Good Old Pebbles unlocks after you ride Pebbles for 35 km. Its guide says fast travel does not count toward that distance, so keep her as your active horse and ride manually if the perk has not appeared. The general distance statistic can be confusing if you have ridden other horses; use the perk itself as the confirmation. KCD2.org’s Pebbles location and perk guide was updated September 2, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Experience the events with the eyes of Heinrich, a young man who moves away to avenge the murder of his parents
- The authentic rendition of 15th century bohemia gives you the opportunity to experience this fascinating environment like never before
- Customise Heinrich's appearance, skills and equipment as you like
- Feel the clinking of steel and the relentless battle in thrilling real-time battles
Herring has a separate perk, Red Herring, after 50 km according to KCD2.org. That guide reports conflicting information about whether mounted fast travel contributes to the distance, so manual riding is the dependable approach if you are building his perk progress. Herring is offered by Kabat during “Back in the Saddle”; whether you can recover him after declining or switching is not reliably established, so save before a consequential choice if you may want to reverse it.
Pebbles vs. Herring after their perks
The following are KCD2.org’s clean reference values after each horse’s perk. They are guide values, not guaranteed numbers for every save: tack, Horsemanship effects, Hardcore mode, and game updates can change what you see.

Which horse should you choose for your playstyle?
Keep Pebbles for carrying and long rides
Her higher listed capacity suits loot hauling, while her higher listed stamina is useful on long journeys. If those are the stats you care about, the reference comparison favors Pebbles once Good Old Pebbles is active.

Choose Herring if courage matters more
Herring’s higher listed courage makes him a reasonable choice if you value that stat for danger or mounted combat, or simply prefer him. The comparison does not make either horse a universal winner.
Do not switch just to gain speed
The guide lists both horses at 55 speed after their perks. Tack and player effects may alter the values shown in your save, so a replacement is not an automatic speed upgrade.

Check equipment and displayed stats before replacing a horse
A stat gap may be narrower than it looks if one horse is equipped differently. Compare them with the same or equivalent tack, and account for Horsemanship effects and difficulty. KCD2.org recommends considering a saddle or saddlebags to address capacity, or horseshoes for travel, before replacing a horse to solve a narrower equipment problem.
- For carrying more, check whether a saddle or saddlebags address the shortfall.
- For travel, compare horseshoes and the displayed stats on your current setup.
- For a fair comparison, use equivalent equipment and check both horses in the same save conditions.
The reference values are useful for deciding what to inspect, but your horse’s displayed numbers are the ones that apply to your current setup.

- This is an expansion for Kingdom Legacy: Feudal Kingdom.
- It offers 3 rounds of play, and 29 new cards to explore by embarking on adventures.
