Killing Gatekeeper Gostoc stops his Stormveil rune theft and gives you access to his Bell Bearing, but it can cut off Nepheli Loux’s linked quest progression—and the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone Gostoc can sell afterward. If you want the quest reward, keep him alive until you finish Nepheli’s questline and buy the stone. If you only want to stop the theft, there are in-game ways to do that without killing him.
What do you gain by killing Gostoc?
- His Bell Bearing: Gostoc’s listed death drops include his Bell Bearing. It gives you access to his shop inventory through the Twin Maiden Husks, but the available item information does not confirm that every item or stock limit transfers unchanged.
- An end to his rune theft: While Gostoc is stalking you in Stormveil Castle, he takes 30% of the Runes you drop when you die, according to the community-maintained Elden Ring Wiki.gg entry for Gostoc. Killing him removes that threat, but it is not the only way to stop it.
The immediate benefit is convenience and the Bell Bearing—not the later Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. That stone is described as a separate addition to Gostoc’s shop after Nepheli’s questline.
What can you lose by killing him?
Nepheli Loux’s linked progression
Gostoc’s progression is intertwined with Nepheli Loux’s, and the community-maintained Nepheli Loux reference warns that killing Gostoc can fail the linked progression. If you want to finish her questline, do not kill him before it is complete.
One Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
After Nepheli’s questline is complete, Gostoc appears in the Stormveil throne room and can sell one Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. The cited entry describes it as a purchase from Gostoc; it does not establish that the stone becomes available from the Twin Maiden Husks through his Bell Bearing.

How to stop the rune theft without killing him
The theft is described as applying to deaths in Stormveil Castle while Gostoc is stalking you. The reference also describes progression steps that stop the theft while he remains alive, and says defeating Godrick stops it if you skipped those steps. If this is your only reason for killing him, use the relevant in-game progression or defeat Godrick instead.
Best order if you want every available reward
- Keep Gostoc alive while you complete Nepheli Loux’s questline.
- Return to Gostoc in the Stormveil throne room after the questline is complete.
- Exhaust his dialogue and purchase the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
- Only then decide whether you still want to kill him for his Bell Bearing.
Already killed Gostoc?
Check whether his Bell Bearing is among the drops. The available references do not establish a way to restore his quest progression or obtain his later Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone after his death, so do not assume either outcome is recoverable.

So, should you kill Gostoc?
Kill him if ending the theft and claiming his Bell Bearing matter more to you than preserving Nepheli-linked progression and Gostoc’s later stone purchase. Otherwise, leave him alive until you finish the questline and buy the stone. The 30% figure applies to dropped Runes after deaths in Stormveil while he is stalking you; it is not a universal loss outside those conditions.
